From all the team at PakMag, we wish you and your family a very special festive season, and a happy New Year. Be safe, disconnect from technology, and enjoy your beautiful family.

HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… A FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT

Wecreategoalsforourselvesonaregularbasis–fitnessgoals, work goals, personal goals. So why not do the same with your family? Create a family mission statement that helpsdefinethevaluesthatmatterthemosttoeveryone.

HAPPY FAMILIES TRY… TO FIND DAILY QUALITY TIME

For most families, dinner time is quality family time. If you or your partner works nights or shift work, then dinner may not be suited to you but try and make sure you have at least a half an hour every day to spend time together without any distractions. No television. No mobile phones. No iPads.

HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PAST

Knowing your family history can bring pride and understanding to your children. It can help get them interested in history and give them a better understanding of where they have come from and what that means.

HAPPY FAMILIES HAVE… AN EQUAL SAY

Everyone in the household should be treated as equal. Sure, you’re the boss and you make the rules about what’s for dinner and when it’s bedtime but your children should always feel like they have a right to express their thoughts, feelings and opinions.

HAPPY FAMILIES AIM FOR… A WEEKLY MEETING

Set up twenty minutes a week to have a family meeting. Talk about the highlights and lowlights of the week before and what’s on the agenda for the week ahead. Talk about goals

Don't Worry, Be HappyA recent study spanning across seven countries and conducted by Fisher-Price confirmed that the one thing that most mums wish for their children is happiness. Seeing our children sad, frustrated, depressed or anxious is difficult to say the least. And while there is no magic ingredient we can feed our children to ensure they are constantly happy - According to The Secrets of Happy Families, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler, there seems to be a few trends in what happy families have in common.

you want to meet and if you happen to meet these goals, then perhaps offer a family reward.

HAPPY FAMILIES KNOW… THE RIGHT WAY TO FIGHT

Arguing is perfectly normal and natural, especially if everyone feels comfortable enough to voice their opinion and express their feelings. No one is going to agree with each other all the time but, turns out, there is a right way andawrongdaytofight.

Bruce Feiler suggests that when things start to get heated, separate everybody for a bit of a breather. Ask everyone to come up with three options to the solution to the problem and then bring everyone back together to discuss the decision moving forward.

HAPPY FAMILIES… PLAY TOGETHER

There is nothing more important than having fun together as a family. Try to schedule a family fun afternoon once a week (or once a month) where you get out of the house together. Go to the beach. Go to a park. Go for a hike or simply jump in the car and explore a new area where you have never been before.

Relationships are hard work and even the strongest families have good and bad days. There will be times when you feel so overwhelmed with love for your partner and your children and other times when you will be on the verge of throwing a shoe at their heads (probably a dirty shoe that the kids were supposedtopickupoffthefloorandputaway).

Lead by example and try to ensure you are as happy as you can be. Eliminate the things in your life, from friendships to unhealthy habits that could be making things toxic for you.

Cairns Tropic Storms Cheerleading are, quite literally, on top of the world after last month’s success at the FNQ Cheer & Dance Championships in Ingham. With over 40 athletes, aging from five to 52 years of age, travelling down, the team managed to place in all 15 of the categories that the club entered.

PakMag’s Jenna was able to sit down with Lilah, as well as withheadcoach,PeterSpoonerandadministratorSueStewartafterthefinals.Andthisminisuperstar,alongwithallofherteammates,aredefinitelygivingthecommunitysomethingtocheerabout.

Lilah joined the Storms when she was seven years old and as soon as it started. She tells PakMag that it was her cousin’s interest in cheerleading that attracted her to the sport and now, along with her teammates, she trains once a week at Trinity Beach State School hall.

Some of the older crew train twice a week for two hours each training session and training is amped up when a competition is near.

Big DReAMsBig Cheers

The best thing about cheerleading? “The stunting and jumping,” Lilah tells us.

Lilah is part of the Cyclones, but the Storms team also caters to children as young as four with their Raindrops program.

“As a club we are reasonably laid back,” head coach Peter Spooner explains. “Thatbeingsaid, wearealsofairlyfirmindisciplineandtraining.”

The results have certainly paid off and Peter admits that he couldn’t be prouder of his team. “Our kids amaze me every day with how far they have all come in the short time we have been together. They train hard and they have fun, which is the most important thing at the end of the day.”

What’s in store for the Storms? More training, more competitions in 2016 and hopefully the Nationals in Melbourne next year as well.

“The team are not just dancers. They are not just gymnasts. They are not just stunt people. They are all three, and they are all pretty fantastic at what they do.”

It’s the time of the year when the weather heats up, the closets become packed with hidden toys, the money gets tight and the stress levels increase. And, for most of us, Christmas is also the time we welcome our extended families with open arms. We all love our families. Sure, you may have a quirky cousin or an exhausting aunt in the mix, but family is family. Here are some tips to make the time you spend with them as pleasant as possible and memorable for all the right reasons.

Be the Boss Yes, they raised you, but you’re in charge now which means if you say no sweets, no treats and no staying up late with Nanny and Poppy, no means no. Stand your ground, especially in front of the children.

Ignore the Mess When you have extra people in your house, things are going to get messy, especially when you also add in the Christmas decorations, extra food and house full of kids on school holidays.

You have two choices – you can spend your free time picking up after everyone or you can just let things be a little chaotic for a while.

Let them Fit into Your Routine Life doesn’t stop when your parents or in-laws come to visit and often you still have to work, grocery shop, clean, cook dinners and do things around the house.

Try not to feel guilty that you cannot entertain them the entire time. Most likely than not, they are perfectly content being with you and the kids, even if you’re just at home.

Give them Jobs Alternatively, if they seem restless, you can always give them a few tasks. Ask your dad to be in charge of wrapping all the kid’s Christmas presents. Get mum to be in control of all washing.

AndI’msurethekid’sunclewouldlovetobetheofficialdogwalker.

Let it Go Whether they are staying for a weekend or a few weeks, there are going to be days when tension builds. You may haveafightwithyourpartnerinfrontofthem.Yourkidsmay get in a screaming match and you choose to discipline them in a way that your parents don’t agree with.

Rather than let these things get to you, let it go. Move forward and forget it. Talk to your partner at night, take a deep breath, vent to your girlfriends at work and let it go.

The storm never bothered you anyway.

Create a Naughty Jar Parents acting poorly? Not cleaning up their mess? Swearing in front of the kids? Make a family naughty jar and ensure that everyone, parents included, contribute when they do something wrong.

This can add a little bit of humour to the situation but also instils to your children that poor behaviour is not acceptable at any age.

If you have a spare corner in the house, you can also create a time out corner. I can guarantee nothing lightens the mood after a bit of an argument like watching your father-in-law pouting in the naughty corner.

Managing your MIL author Katy Rink identifies some key characteristics in parents and in-laws that we couldn’t help but share. So, which one can you expect at your Christmas dinner?

The Hoverer Everyday they’re hovering. Helicopter parents often turn into helicopter grandparents. Hoverers like to help and it may feel like they are watching your every move, ensuring you cook the chook right, you use the right placemats and you stir the potatoes just the way your partner likes them.

Take it as a compliment or pass the reins over to them and go relax for a little bit.

The Grinch It’s too hot. The kids are too loud. The television isn’t playing his sports program. TheworldisofficiallyoveraccordingtotheGrinchyGrandmaorGrandpa.

Give the Grinch a beer, send him to the naughty corner and tell him he can only come out once he has three nice things to say about the situation.

The Bulldozer Also known as the steamroller, these are the parents that come in, expect the best seat on the lounge, a fresh soft drink in their hands and the remote.

Selective hearing works well in these instances.

The Expert Having kids thirty years ago means that your parents and in-laws are experts in all aspects of raising children and maintaining a household. And, these experts are not afraid to let you know.

Smile, nod and take their advice in stride.

See it From Their Point of View Your parents and your in-laws were the boss for several years. As proud as they are of seeing you take control, raise yourownfamilyandbecomeamum, itcanbedifficultforthem to let go.

After all, just like your kids will always be your babies, you will always be their baby, even if you have the odd grey (ahem… blonde) hair and a mortgage of your own. And they will always love you unconditionally.

You (and your children) really do mean the world to them, during the Christmas season and every single other day of the year. So even if they drive you nuts, put the peanut butter lid on halfway and drink all the beer in the fridge, keep these tips in mind.

And buy a few extra cartons of beer...just in case.

Who is Coming to Christmas this Year?

BUMP & BUB pakmag

Baby'sFIRST

CHRISTMAS

Sure, your baby won’t remember his or her first Christmas but you certainly will! And you’ll have the stacks and stacks of photos to prove it. So here are some tips on making baby’s first Christmas just that little bit extra special.

SPLURGE ON CHRISTMAS PJ’S It’s just not Christmas without a new set of PJ’s and there are so many adorable Christmas pyjama sets for little ones.

GET CRAFTY WITH CHRISTMAS KEEPSAKES Create a Christmas canvas to help commemorate just how wee your little one was by taking an imprint of your bub’s hand or foot and making it into a Christmas-themed picture.Havealookonlineandseewhatyoucanfindbutour favourites include a Christmas footprint penguin, or a reindeer handprint.

DESIGN A PERSONALISED ORNAMENTThere are a number of personalised ornaments you can buy online or in stores to commemorate the occasion, many of which allow you to add an image, bub’s name or a special message.

STAGE A PHOTO SHOOT Many professional photographers offer Christmas specials where you can get a few great portraits of your little one for a good price. Or, you can stage a photo shoot yourself.

You may want to grab a couple family ones too and we highly recommend dressing up in ugly Christmas sweaters to mark the occasion. Make sure you continue the ugly Christmas sweater tradition every year. This is another great way to capture how much bub has grown.

PERSONALISE A STOCKING Getbubaspecialstockingofhisownandfillitwithlittlegoodies.

START A TRADITION There are so many wonderful Christmas traditions to try out. We love Christmas advent calendars, Elf on the Shelf, a Christmas Eve Box (where you include a new set of PJ’s, a Christmas book or DVD, a tin of Milo and a few other goodies to enjoy on Christmas Eve) and taking a drive to see the Christmas lights.

Of course, your baby will probably be too young to remember or even participate in most of these but the memories are for you as well.

SEND A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM SANTATalk to Santa is a great website for this. Simply upload your details and within 48 hours the elves with send your bub a video from Santa. You can share it with friends and family through social media. www.talktosanta.com

INTRODUCE YOUR LITTLE ONE TO CHRISTMAS CAROLSHead over to YouTube and check out Super Simple Songs which offers a number of Christmas classics with cute puppets, colourful animation and more. This is a great way to introduce bub to Santa, the songs and the colours of Christmas. www.youtube.com/user/SuperSimpleSongs

MAKE A CHRISTMAS TIME CAPSULE Pick up a beautiful Christmas gift box and, once Christmas isover, fillitwiththemementosfromabove–thePJ’s,thestocking, the ornament and some photos of the day.

+ HEALTHWe’ve all seen the food pyramid that showcases what we should be eating (dairy, produce, whole grains, etc) but, it turns out, there is much more to filling our platter with goodness than just what we eat.

The Healthy Mind Platter features seven daily essential mental activities to optimise brain matter and create well-being. Designed by David Rock and Dr. Daniel J. Siegal, The Healthy Mind Platter creates an appetite for increasing awareness of how to nourish our mental well-being each day too. “The key is balancing the day with each of these essential mental activities,” Dr. Dan explains on his website. “Mental wellness is all about reinforcing our connections with others and the world around us; and it is also about strengthening the connections within the brain itself.”

Story Matthew Grounds, Principal Audiologist at Hearservice

Look after your ears, after all… you only get one pair.

1. Clean your ears with extra care. Wipe the outer ear with a washcloth or tissue. Don’t put anything into your ear smaller than your elbow. Don’t use cotton buds, bobby pins or sharp pointed objects to clean your ears. These objects may injure the ear canal or eardrum.

2. Blow - don’t sniff! Reduce the risk of ear infections by treating upper respiratory (ears, nose, and throat) infections promptly; blow don’t sniff to avoid blocking your Eustachian tubes.

3. Listen to your ears. Some illnesses and medical conditions can affect your hearing. If you experience sudden hearing loss or have constant noise in your ears or head, see an ear doctor promptly.

4. Save your cells. If you are exposed to loud music, loud power tools or machinery, wear ear plugs to protect yourself from noise damage.

5. Put a lid on it. Always wear a helmet when you participate in any activity that puts you at risk for head and ear injuries. These may include boxing, cycling, skiing, horse-riding, rollerblading and football.

6. Prioritise your hearing health. You only get one set of ears for life and hearing loss is permanent. See your professional audiologist every two years. If you notice a change in your hearing, the sooner you see your audiologist, the better.

+ THE HEALTHY MIND PLATTER

+ LOOKING AFTER YOUR EARS

So what are the seven things we should be focusing on each day?

1. SLEEP

Our brain needs rest. Sleep consolidates learning and helps to recover from the experiences of the day.

2. FOCUS TIME

Focus time is work time – when we focus on goals, take on challenges and make deep connections in the brain.

3. PLAY TIME

For adults, play time allows us to be spontaneous and creative, to playfully enjoy novel experiences.

4. PHYSICAL TIME Exercise is an essential aspect to our mental well-being.

5. CONNECTING TIME This is our social time when we connect to other people and to the natural world around us.

6. TIME IN Thisisour‘me-time’wherewereflectinternally, focusing on our thoughts and feelings.

7. DOWN TIME Down time is our non-focused time. Thereisnospecificgoalandwesimply let our mind wander and simply relax.

PLAY releases good hormones into the system including IGF1 and HGH - great for learning and growth. A solid dose of play improves appetite choices and creates positive connections amongst those that play. Think Tiggy with the little ones, tennis with your partner and team sports withyourfriends.Youwillfindopportunityforphysicalplayeverywhere you look.

PARTY - it is the season!! Move your party to the dance floorandawayfromthebar.Themultidirectional, threedimensional movement of dance is great for stability and balance, and it helps your body metabolise the sugar (which is likely you have ingested) with Christmas party food and drink.

PEACE switches off the stress hormones (cortisol & adrenalin) and switches on the anabolic hormones (progesterone) that keep your mind and body strong during this potentially stressful time of year.

Everyonehasadifferentsolutionforfinding‘innerpeace’,but we can agree that time for daily mindfulness, gratitude and calm helps maintain a healthy life balance. Try guided meditation with the Omvana app (recommended by The Imperfect Mum) or quiet time in nature.

Make time each day for the 3Ps and stay fit this festive season.

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of my go-to remedies when sick. Sure, it doesn’t taste that great but it is effective in helping to relieve symptoms of colds and flus. However, there is so much more to apple cider vinegar than meets the tongue. Enjoy all the health benefits of this wonder product:

1. Make your hair shine – Simply add ½ tablespoon of ACV and one cup of cold water into an old shampoo bottle and pour the mixture over your hair after shampooing.

2. Keep your home fresh and clean – Create your own natural cleaner by mixing ACV with water. You can use it to clean toilets, dishes, microwaves, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and so much more.

3. Keep your skin clear – Dilute ACV with two parts water and use it as a face cleanser. You can also use it to help aid in sunburns, stretch marks and even warts.

4. Whiten your teeth – Forget the expensive teeth whitening products. Simply rub ACV directly on your teeth and rinse with water.

5. Relieve tired hands and feet – Use apple cider vinegar as a natural lubricant for massage.

6. Balance your inner body system – Healthy alkaline pH levels can mean the difference between feeling great and feeling drained. If your acid levels are too high, you could lack energy. ACV helps the body to regulate your alkaline levels and keep your energy up.

7. Keep your sinuses clear – Whether you are suffering with a cold, allergies or sinus congestion, ACV can cleanse the lymph nodes and clear away that excess mucus.

8. Prevent yeast infections – Let’s face it. Thrush is not fun. Apple cider vinegar can help rid your body of candida – the yeast that causes thrush.

9. Reduce heartburn – Heartburn is caused by stomach acid and thus it might seem odd to treat this issue with an acidic product. But adding one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water can help relieve the symptoms of heartburn.

10. Detox after the silly season – Your body may take a beating during Christmas with the extra food and beverages. Use ACV as part of your detox program to stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help detoxify the liver.

FABRIC TREE

DRIFTWOOD TREE

Rosemary Tree

Traditional Christmas trees are beautiful. But they can be messy. Eventheartificialonescanleaveamesstocleanupwhichiswhymany families are considering Christmas trees that think outside the cardboard box. Instead of adding a traditional Christmas tree to the corner, why not consider a deco hung canvas tree? Simply hang it up and you’re done. When it’s time to clean up from Christmas, roll it up and put it away until next year.

Thanks to www.cotemaison.fr

Add a bit of the beach to your tropical Christmas with this adorable driftwood tree idea. The kids will love collecting bits of driftwood to bring home. Follow the same directions as above (Rosemary tree) to secure each piece of driftwood and then decorate with pine cones, evergreen, Christmas ornaments and fairy lights.

One of the best things about choosing a Christmas tree to place on the wall is that you don’t have to make space in your home. The presents can still sit under the wall hanging but without that cluttered look.

Thanks to freepeople.tumblr.com

For those working with a small space, this Rosemary Tree is a simple and eloquent solution. You can still enjoy the beautiful smell

of Christmas without the mess. Using a saw, simply cut various pieces of wood and attached rosemary, evergreen or other fresh

greenery to each board using a hot glue gun. Use painters tape to secure the boards on the wall in a tree form.

PHOTO TREE

STAR TREE

Personalise Christmas with this adorable idea. Choose some of your favourite family photos or why not give the kids the camera and let them choose some things they would like to photograph? We especially love the black and white vintage look. Simply choose photos and arrange on a clean wall into a Christmas tree, complete with the trunk and star on the top.

For those who still want a traditional tree but are sick of picking up broken ornaments that your toddler has grabbed from the bottom of the tree, then here is a stunning alternative. Simply add star wall stickers around the tree as well as a few star decorations on the top of the tree (where littlefingerscannotreach).

Here is another great way to get the kids involved in Christmastreedecoratingbyfindingtheornamentsoutsideof the home. Take a walk in the park, collect all kinds of leaves and head home to hang them on the tree. Top it off with a few extra lush leaves shaped like a star.

TROPICAL

PARTYThe heat is on! Host your own tropical Christmas party and celebrate the sizzling hot summer. Here are a few fun ways to get into the festive spirit.

1. Light it up – wrap fairy lights around palm trees in the backyard to give the area a bit of a glow.

2. Get crafty – make your own Christmas tropical wreath to hang on the door. This is a great project to do with the kids too.

3. Tropical treats – you cannot go wrong with a BBQ-inspired party with plenty of shrimp, chicken and meats paired with various tropical salads. A fun summery starter are these delicious Cubed Watermelon Bites from www.addapinch.com.au. Simply sandwich feta in between two pieces of cubed watermelon and drizzle with balsamic glaze.

4. Decorate – give your backyard a taste of the tropics with an adorable pineapple gold glitter banner from Etsy store BashandCoParty. Stock up on paper umbrellas to add to the drinks and choose colourful paper lanterns to hang from the ceiling.

5. Go Green - Amp up the Christmas vibes on your table setting with tropical greenery. Simply add some leaves and ferns to the glasses and cutlery. Secure with brown string for a festive feel.

6. Fruity Hats - Make your own DIY fruit inspired party hats from www.studiodiy.com

7. Taste the tropics – it’s not a Christmas party without cocktails (or mocktails) in Christmas colours. Try the Match Mint Ice Tea from www.loveandlemons.com and pair with the Strawberry Lime Rose Sangria from www.kitchentreaty.com

8. Perfect your pavlova – No Australian Christmas would be complete without a pavlova! Try this Raspberry Pomegranate Layered Pavola at www.hungryaustralian.com

9. Festive fancy dress – costume parties are always fun but it can be quite uncomfortable to dress up in the heat. Pair your shorts, togs and thongs with these DIY party printables from Etsy store CreativeSenseCo.

10. Kiddiepoolcoldies–filltwokiddiespoolswithiceanddrinksfortheday.Fillonewith adult drinks and one with juice for the little ones.

Most busy mums I know would agree that an extra set of hands around the house wouldn’t hurt. When balancing career, relationships, family and personal commitments, it can be hard to fit it all in a day, especially when there are school pick-ups to do, lunches to organise, clothes to wash, dinners to make and floors to mop.

One of the latest trends for busy parents is to hire a nanny or au pair to help around the house with basic household duties and childcare.

Nannies and au pairs do not usually replace childcare and often parents will choose to use both. Nothing compares to the social and educational elements that long day care, child care and family day care can provide but many families these days needalittlemoreflexibilityandalotmorehelparoundthehouse.

For families that do not have set working hours, often work weekends, have the space in their homes and do not want to rely on different babysitters every week, alternative care may work for you.

But what options do you have? And what are the main differences?

Nanny

• Anannyisafullyqualifiedchildcareprovider.

• Most parents have no problems leaving their children overnight with a nanny or letting a nanny care for their children unsupervised.

• They may be hired to help with minor household duties.

• They can be live in or live out and often are hired for an extensive amount of time rather than on an “as required” basis.

• They generally work full time or part time set hours.

• They are paid a wage.

• UnderthenewChildcareBenefitScheme,nannycarecanbeclaimedbackviathechildcarebenefitandchildcare rebate.

Nanny PA

• A Nanny PA is similar to a nanny except may also perform personal assistant duties.

• For working professionals with their own businesses, this may be a smart option as you can deduct part of their wage as a business expense. Talk to your accountant or anannyservicetofindoutmore.

Paid Au Pairs

• Au pairs are “hosted” by families to help out with the chores and childcare.

• Paid au pairs generally receive $150 to $300 a week for their assistance.

• They are not generally educated in childcare and thus are considered more as a “mum’s helper” rather than a nanny.

• Many parents will not leave their children alone unsupervised with an au pair for extensive periods of time but this is completely the decision of the parents.

• Au pairs often travel with families on outings and provide an extra set of hands to help out with the kids.

• They can be live out but most are live in.

• They generally work part-time, are hired on a short term basis (three to six months) and often are from overseas or travelling from out of state.

Mutual Exchange Au Pairs

• These are similar to Paid Au Pairs but rather than being paid in cash, Mutual Exchange Au Pairs provide a certain amount of hours each week in exchange for room, food and board with the host family.

Finding a Nanny or Au Pair

Youcanuseanaupairoranannyagencytofindalternativecare. Or, you can choose to do it yourself.

There are a number of databases online that can help you findtheperfectmatchaswellaslocalFacebookgroupsthat advertise au pair positions in your area. Gumtree is anotheroptionwhenitcomestofindingnanniesbutyouwillrequire to do all the interviewing, background and police checks yourself. Going through an agency will cost a fee but this background work is already completed for you.

DININGOutdoor

It’s time to enjoy the great outdoors, in your own backyard. There is nothing better than enjoying a delicious meal with family and friends on a beautiful evening. And, best of all, you don’t have to drive home afterwards!

GLASS, WICKER OR TIMBER? There are so many different styles of outdoor dining furniture out there from timber tables to wicker settings. When choosing the type of furniture, keep it mind the conditions. Living in FNQ, stuff is bound to get wet. If you have children, you may also want to consider choosing outdoor furniture that is kid-friendly – high benches or swivel chairs may not be best for toddlers.

SET UP A TOY SPECIFIC AREA Preferably hidden around the corner from your main outdoor dining area. Nothing clutters up your outdoor area quite like push bikes, ride-ons, sports equipment and dirty toys that the kids should have put away. Invest in a large outdoor wooden toy box to keep all of these items or choose an area reserved for toys.

ADD SOME FLORAL AND FAUNA Nothing brightens up the dining area quite like hanging baskets andplanters.Youcanalsofindsomebeautifuloutdoorwallartandcanvasses that can add a splash of colour to your walls.

SEEK SHADE LivinginFNQhassomanyperksandthesunisdefinitelyoneofthem. But it’s always a good idea to have a shaded area for dining and playing. If you don’t have a patio with a roof, then consider a sun shade or a gazebo to create a beautiful outdoor dining atmosphere that is sun-safe.

SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE AREA You will probably have enough natural light from the sun during the day but once night falls, it’s time to get creative. Pendant lamps are great for outdoors as are tiki torches or overhead lighting. You can also add a bit of fun to the backyard with fairy lights draped around the trees or hanging from the ceiling. And make sure you also have a few gorgeous candles on the table.

BECOME THE MASTER OF COOKERY Every outdoor dining area needs a BBQ. It’s pretty much required. In addition to a BBQ, you may also want to consider a bar, a pizza oven or even a full outdoor kitchenette which includes a sink for cleaning up after dinner.

PREPARE FOR HEAT Onefinalthingthatyouroutdoordiningareaneedsisafan.Because it will get hot! If your outdoor area doesn’t already have ceiling fans installed, you can purchase stand-alone ones to add tothecornersandensurebetterairflowduringthoseextrahumidsummer days.

Travelling with kids can be tough. Balancing the baggage with the kids; managing the lack of sleep, change in routine and time zone switch; and not knowing where you are, can transform what is supposed to be a relaxing holiday into a stressful nightmare.

Here are some top tips to stress less

P A C K I N G S M A R TYour Passport toSTORY Bree James

1. INVEST IN GREAT LUGGAGE Look for:

• Luggage with 360 degree wheels that can be rolled along easily whilst also carrying a child will take A LOT of stress out of your commute.

• A backpack for your carry on to keep your hands free. One that carries a drink bottle outside the bag is also handy. Pack it with items that you absolutely couldn’t do without for more than a day, such as medication and a change of clothes for the kids just in-case your baggage is delayed.

• Asmalllightcarry-onbagortwothatfitsintoyourlargersuitcasetogiveyoumorebaggagetofillonyourreturntrip if you have over-shopped.

2. PACK IN ADVANCE Pack a week in advance, and then repack two days before and cull as much as you can. Remember, the more you take, the less you can bring home.

3. PACK RIGHT • Go light on the clothing. Follow this formula: three tops for

every bottom. As for footwear, limit yourself to sneakers and two pairs of shoes—one casual and one formal (kids really don’t need a formal pair).

• Getspace-efficient.Don’tjustfold,roll.

• Case Tidy’s, like Ciao Bella Travel keep bulky items, undergarments, dirty laundry and shoe’s separated (cost from $8.95)

• Put footwear and other heavy items near the wheelbase to prevent the suitcase from tipping over.

• Maximiseeverynook.Stuffshoeswithsocksandfillthemoulded cups of bras with underwear, etc.

4. KEEP TABS ON YOUR BAG • BuyaluggagetrackerlikeLugLoc,whichhasafifteen

day rechargeable battery (GSM and Bluetooth Powered Tracker)sothatyoucanfindyourbaginanycommercialairport worldwide.

• Label your bag tag with an e-mail address, rather than a home address, so that you can be more easily contacted in transit.

5. PREPARE FOR THE JOURNEY • Pack a special “Activity Bag” just for the kids to be

responsible for. It should be a small backpack that they can carry on themselves that has some surprise activities like a colour in book, a book to read, a small toy and a little pillow and blanket inside if you are doing a long haul flight.

• Keep a family travel journal: pack a blank journal, some glue, coloured pencils and scissors (leave the scissors out if going overseas) so the kids can stick ticket stubs, brochures, draw pictures and write about each day of your adventure. See the www.pakmag.com.au for a daily template.

40 DECEMBER 2015 www.pakmag.com.au

Don’t give your pet a trip to the vet this Christmas; follow these tips to keep your best mate happy and healthy.

1. MANY FOODS ARE DANGEROUS AND HARMFUL TO PETS

Avoid feeding the following foods AT ANY TIME OF YEAR:

Chocolate – toxic to the heart and nervous system. Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas – can cause acute kidney failure. Garlic and Onions – may cause blood cell damage and anaemia. Avocado – may cause stomach upsets such as vomiting

and diarrhoea. Coffee and Tea – may cause stomach upsets. Caffeine is toxic to the heart and nervous system. Xylitol (found in gum, lollies etc) – can lead to liver failure. Cooked bones – may cause stomach lacerations, punctures and can easily become stuck in the throat. Nuts – Macadamia nuts, moldy pecans and walnuts can cause seizures, vomiting and neurological issues. Sage (aseasoningusedinstuffing)–cancausetummyupsetsandcentralnervoussystem damage. Alcohol – may cause intoxication, coma and death. Dairy foods – can cause stomach upsets such as diarrhoea. Fatty Foods – such as sausages, ham bones etc – may cause pancreatitis.

2. “JUST A LITTLE TREAT” IS OKAY! THINK AGAIN

One piece of bacon (or ham) given to your dog is equivalent to a human eating thirteen pieces of bacon.

3. FEED YOUR PET A HIGH QUALITY, NUTRITIONALLY DENSE PET FOOD

- such as Hills Vet Essentials, to ensure they are getting the nourishment they need (somesupermarketbrandscontainfillersthataddbulkratherthannutrition).

4. DON’T GIVE YOUR PET MORE FOOD THAN USUAL

- particularly if they’re not exercising as much - just an extra kilo or two can make a small cat or dog obese. Feeding your pet too much food can also lead to stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

5. GIVE YOUR PET NON-FOOD TREATS

- such as toys, a new collar and lead or a new comfy bed.

6. TREAT THEM WITH LOVE RATHER THAN FOOD

- take them for walks, throw that ball or Frisbee and enjoy cuddles on the couch.

Pets as presents must be considered seriously. Traditionally, theinfluxof

animals into shelters increases during January and February

as many pets are given as Christmas presents and then become unwanted when the

responsibility of pet ownership becomes a reality. Consider the expenses involved with owning a pet and the time

needed to give them a great quality life. Be sure you

have the recipient’s consent and REMEMBER that the

cute puppy or kitten will be with them for many more

Christmases to come.

Christmas is traditionally a time of indulgence and many owners hate to see their pet missing out. As you and your family sit around the table this Christmas, you may be tempted to share all the yummy goodies with your pet. Don’t! Giving inappropriate foods and overfeeding are common causes of health problems seen by veterinarians over the festive period.
