Law

• The law of Pakistan does not allow the discrimination based on sex.

• The law of Pakistan also designates places of exclusion, “loopholes,” such as religious institutions where discrimination is legal.

• Women can get divorced.• Rape is illegal.• Adultery is illegal and a capital offense for married

women (100 lashes for unmarried women).• Allowing oneself to be raped can be declared adultery.

Divorce Women can legally get divorced, but it counter

cultural. Women who file for a divorce are sometimes

disowned or killed.

A woman who gets a divorce cannot get remarried.A man may get divorced and remarried with no set limits of

the number of times he may do this.

RapeRequires four male witnesses of penetration in

order for the perpetrator to be prosecuted. If rape cannot be proven it is often consider act

of adultery for the womanIf the woman is married she is buried up to her

breasts and stoned.If the woman is unmarried then she will receive

100 lashes.

Allows for the killing of divorced women.Women are killed in blood feuds to get revenge

on their husbands.Women are raped to dishonor their husbands.

Islamic code of conduct for women that includes:

Religious fundamentalists centered Pakistani law around the Islamic code of Shari'a.

In state level application Islam uses the oppressive system of Purdah.

The state which is run by fundamentalists has the sole right to interpret the Qur'an.
