Power Sector - Background

WAPDA was established in 1958 with the following mandate:

• Meet electricity demand of the country (except area of Karachi) by constructing new power plants, transmission lines and distribution system.

• Develop hydro storage projects for meeting irrigation demand of the country and construct hydro power plants.

• NTDC is responsible for Control and Monitoring of power plants and 500/220 kV Power Network of the country excluding Karachi.

▪ Power Plants: 76 Nos.

▪ 500 kV Grid Stations: 14 Nos.

▪ 220 kV Grid Stations: 39 Nos.

▪ 500 kV Transmission Lines: 5271 KM

▪ 220 kV Transmission Lines: 9686 KM
