To nd out how much paint youll need you must rst calculatethe area to be painted. Measure the height and width of eachwall, then multiply the results together to give you its area. Do thesame for each window and door, counting any open hatches aswindows and any doorless frames or arches as doors.

    Planning

    Togetthebestresultsfromyourpaintingjobyoumustmeasureandprepareyourareaandsurfacesthoroughly.

Add the areas of all the walls together and subtract the areas ofall the doors and windows. The calculation will look something likethis:

Ascertain the spread rateof the paint. If its not printedon the side of the tin, checkwith the manufacturer. Therate is often given as m/.Now divide the m you needto paint by the spread rate. For instance, if the spread rateis 9 m/, then the exampleabove would need 13.76 9= 1.53 litres. If two coats arerequired, simply multiply 1.53by 2 (= 3.06).

There are many onlinecalculators which will do thecalculations for you.

Having bought the paint, take time to read the directionson the tin for the proper wayto prep and prime your wallsbefore painting them with thatspecific paint.

    Wall 5.44 m x 2.07 m = 11.2608 mWall 2.532 m x 2.07 m = 5.24124 mDoor 2.1 m x 0.813 m = 1.7073 mWindow 0.9 m x 1.145 m = 1.0305 mCalculation 11.26 + 5.24 1.71 1.03 = 13.76 m

    SANDING

    Painting equipment

Sanding a previously paintedsurface before repainting itensures that the new paintor primer will bond well withthe surface and you end upwith a lasting, quality coat. Some electric sanders are too

abrasive to use on paint soyou have to be careful not togouge the surface with them.Always choose sandpaperwith the right grit for the job.For removing old paint you will

need to start with a coarse grit, whereas if you are just scuffingthe surface to paint over it,you will need an extra fine grit

    (220).

These are mainly used forremoving old paint and rust. They come in all shapes andsizes and also as attachmentsfor electric drills (excellent forcleaning rusted burglar bars).

    What youwill need:

    - Sanding block

    - Putty knife or filler tool

    - Scrapers

    - Paint shield

    - Polycell brush cleaner

    - Mutton cloth- Disposable overalls

    - Paint paddle/stirrer- Drop cloths,

    plastic sheeting

    - Wire brushes

    - Paint pot/kettle

    - Safety gear

    - Paintbrushes

    - Rollers

    - Painter s tape

    - Crack filler

    PUTTY KNIVES OR

    FILLER TOOLS

    SCRAPERS

Scrapers are ideal for removingold paint, rust, putty or glue but

as they have sharp edges andcorners, mind you dont scar thesurface with one. Before storinga scraper, make sure its clean.A quick wipe with turpentinewill do the job.

Before lling a crack, knock offany loose bits of plaster, brickor paint and brush out anyloose material and dust. Openup the crack if necessary. Paintthe crack with plaster primerto ensure the filler bonds well

with it, then use a putty knifeor filler tool to press the fillerinto the crack. A ller tool issimilar to a scraper but has amore flexible blade with which

A pure cotton, soft andabsorbent fabric thats ideal forbuffing, polishing, dusting andcleaning. Some waxes and

polishes cannot be removedby washing so its best to keepseparate cloths for specificuses. Mutton cloth is good forwiping up spills too.

These are really convenient andcan be reused, but they wonthold up to a wash. You canbuy just a jacket or a whole suitthat protects all your clothingand hair. They are breathableand lightweight with elasticcuffs and ankles.

A ready-made guard to keeppaint off an adjacent surface.Often used when paintingwindow frames and skirtingboards. The shield is heldagainst the glass or wall toprotect it. An alternative tomasking off areas and a handytool that can be cleaned andreused.

    DISPOSABLEOVERALLS

    PAINT SHIELDS

its easier to press ller into acrack and scrape off the excess

afterwards. Once dry, sand thefiller smooth, paint with plasterprimer and then your topcoat.

An alternative to masking tape.Masking tape can be hard toremove and can take some ofyour new paint with it, whichmeans touching up. Bloc-itpainters tape is designed tobe easily removed and leave aclean, crisp edge every time.

It also prevents any paint fromseeping through. Tape is anessential item when doing painteffects or masking between twocolours.

Although more expensive thanturpentine (the regular solventcleaner), these powerful solvent-based cleaners are easilyrinsed off with water. To clean abrush used with oil-based paint, work a small amount throughthe bristles, then rinse with

water until thewater runsclear. Hangthe brush (orroller) up todry. Allowdirty cleanerto stand andseparate. The clear toplayer can bereused but thesediment mustbe disposed of correctly (seepage 14 ).

Most paint needs stirring beforeuse, the exception being non-drip enamel. Always read theinstructions on the tin beforestirring, then stir with a clean, flat, smooth piece of wood with

holes drilled through it, or aready-made paint stirrer, whichis the reusable option. Or use adrill attachment stirrer.

Its important to protect yourfloors, furnishings and trimwhen painting. Flecks of paint

can go everywhere, even whenyou are being careful. Dropcloths are for protecting floorsfrom drips and spills and arepositioned right up against thewalls or under the ceiling beingpainted. Plastic sheeting isslippery so its not that goodto use under a ladder orunderfoot, but it is handy forwrapping around furniture, taping over doorways andtaping to skirting boards tosave you lots of cleaning upafterwards.

Its always advisable to decantpaint into another containerrather than use it straight fromthe tin. This ensures that anybristles that fall out of yourbrush and any dirt that it picksup wont contaminate theentire tin. A ready-made paintpot is recommended. Sparepaint pots come with magneticbrush holders that save youfrom damaging your brushesby standing them in the paint, disposable liners which makecleaning them much easier, andVelcro straps for attaching themto your ladder.

    PAINTBRUSHES

Always have a project in mind when choosing a paintbrush as itwill help you pick the best one for the job. If you are stocking yourworkshop, choose quality brushes as they will last you a lifetime.

Paintbrushes can be used with all types of paint as well as withlacquers, varnishes and oils. In addition to painting, varnishingor sealing whole objects, such as doors, walls, furniture and toys, they can be used for cutting in (painting the edges, corners or trim)when you roller a wall. It is possible to paint a wall itself with abrush, but this is uncommon as rollers do the job much better.

    QUALITY VS CHEAP BRUSHES

Quality brushes improve with use as their loose bristles are lost and the tips become rounded, enhancing paint pick up and release.

You also wont have to load the brush with paint so often as quality brushes have a high loading

    capacity.

If the ferrule (the metal binderbetween the handle and bristles) is

made of stainless steel, it wont ever rust.

Quality brushes also hold their shape and form over long periods, but you do need to clean, look after and

    store them correctly.

Cheap brushes are acceptable when youre buying an all-rounder brush to use only a few times, but they tend to drop their bristles into your paint and onto your newly painted surface, and they dont spread the paint evenly.

They also have fewer bristles for their width, which affects their paint- loading capacity, and the bristles are often anchored with an adhesive which deteriorates with use, which means you lose bristles every time.

Projects where cheap brushes are needed include applying wood preservatives to rough timber or for

    removing dust after sanding.
