Public Mural Art Piece at PHIS

By Ms. Ro Jane Prideaux, PHIS Fine Arts Teacher

Kai'ili Kaulukukui, professional muralist and a PHIS alum, is working with students to create the first public mural at our school

located on the side of H-building that faces the main street. The mural features a prominent ʻōhiʻa lehua tree as well as other im-

portant indigenous plants and animals such as the Nene bird and 'Io (Hawaiian hawk), and other specific imagery from Puna. The

intention behind the mural and the process to create it was to honor and amplify youth voices, spreading the message of aloha,

resilience, care, and pride in our ahupua'a and kokua for our community, after the Kilauea eruptions and earthquakes last year.

The project is part of Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz’s initiative "Activate Puna" in partnership with local non-profit "Temple

Children," and will be celebrated with a FREE public event on Saturday, May 11 from 4-10pm in Pahoa town. The event, which

will include music, food, and art vendors, will feature hope flags decorated by students from all over Puna. See the beautiful new

artwork in town and help us Activate Puna!

PHIS National Honor Society On May 24, 2019 the National Honor Society

(NHS) will be collecting HI-5 recyclable alumi-

num cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles for

our monthly fund raiser. Funds collected will

pay for our dues to the national organization,

purchase chords, stoles, and pins for our members, and pay

for our yearbook expenses. Please contact Mr. Behr (313-

4268), Ms. Bumanglag (313-4341), or Ms. Shiratori (313-

4246) if you have recyclable items to donate. Thank you so

much for supporting the NHS at PHIS!

In addition, thank you so very much to each and everyone

who generously supported the National Honor Society's

monthly recycle project by donating plastic bottles, glass bot-

tles, and aluminum cans collected from your classroom or

from your home. We deeply appreciate the extra effort you

all took to perpetuate the National Honor Society and its

core values of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

If you would like to know more about NHS's core values, go

to https://www.honorsociety.org/articles/honor-society-core-

values.

Lastly, the NHS will begin its recycle project in August, so

save those recyclable containers over the long, hot summer.
