Manila, Phil ippines - Between doing household chores, caring for their
spouses and children, balancing the budget, and accomplishing their
careers, many of today’s busy women simply have very l i t t le t ime to
take care of themselves, often to the detriment of their health. Let
us all pay tribute to the heroic love of moms as well as all self-
sacrif icing women. Women should focus on their own health, such as
having themselves protected against the second most common kil ler
cancer among Fil ipino women.
“According to the Department of Health, more than 7,000 new
cases of cervical cancer turn up every year, and over 3,800 of these
patients die because of i t ,” says Dr. Regina Syfu, ob-gynecologist of
Healthway Greenbelt 5.
“While we see that awareness about cervical cancer is rising over
the past few years, a lot of women sti l l have very l i t t le idea about what
causes it, and how it can be prevented,” she adds. “Thankfully,
preventive vaccines are available to keep this cancer from developing.
The main point is to convince women to regard these vaccines as
indispensable to their health.”
Healthway’s cervical cancer vaccinations protect women against
the most common strains of the cancer-causing human papil lomavirus
or HPV. There are around 120 strains of the virus, and among these are
15 types that are considered high-risk, since they can move from the
skin down to the cervix, creating small changes that can eventually lead
to cancer.
Fortunately, i t takes years before the init ial infection to a high-risk
HPV type develops into cervical cancer. That’s why Dr. Regina Syfu
recommends that HPV vaccinations be given as early as possible.
Ideally, the vaccine can be given to girls as early as nine years old, and
to women up to 45 years old.
Dr. Syfu advises women to also take annual Pap smear screening
since it is the easiest and cheapest way to detect any abnormal cell
growth in the cervix that may lead to cancer.
“Cervical cancer is certainly a cause for concern, but we assure
women and their loved ones that it is very easy to prevent,” says
Carmie de Leon, Healthway vice president for sales and marketing.
“With early detection and treatment, i t can be virtually eliminated. So it
is about t ime for busy women to realize that they can care for others
and take good care of their health as well.”
Located in major malls of Metro Manila, Healthway Medical gives
patients the convenience of not having to go out of their way to get
themselves vaccinated against HPV. It has seven branches located at

Cervical Cancer ay madaling maiwasan
--- Cervical cancer is easy to prevent ---
(The Phil ippine Star) Updated July 10, 2012 12:00 AM
May
nagiging cancer.
president for sales and marketing. “Kung maaga itong malalaman at
magagamot, i to ay maaring mawala.
Mall, Edsa Shangri-La, Greenbelt 5, Market! Market!, Robinsons Place
Manila, and The Block in SM City North. Para sa karagdagang
impormasyon, tumawag sa 751- 4929 or bisitahin

BUOD :

Stem cell finding could advance immunotherapy for lung cancer
02 Dec 2012
A University of Cincinnati (UC) Cancer Institute lung cancer research
team reports that lung cancer stem cells can be isolated—and then
grown—in a preclinical model, offering a new avenue for investigating
immunotherapy treatment options that specif ically target stem cells.
John C. Morris, MD, and his colleagues report their f indings in PLOS
One , a peer-reviewed online publication that features original research
from all disciplines within science and medicine.
Stem cells are unique cells that can divide and differentiate into
specialized cells types—for example cardiac muscle or l iver t issue.
These cells also have the abil i ty to self-renew and produce more stem
cells.
"Increasing evidence supports the idea that cancerous tumours have a
population of stem cells, also called cancer-init iating cells, that
continually regenerate and fuel cancer growth," explains Morris, senior
author of the study and professor at the UC College of Medicine. "These
cancer stem cells may also have the highest potential to spread to other
organs."
Current models used to study cancer stem cells provide l imited
information on the interaction between cancer stem cells with the
immune system, making the study of new therapies that uti l ize the
body's immune system to f ight off cancer virtually impossible.
In this study, the UC team set out to f ind a viable, consistent way to
isolate lung cancer stem cells that could be used in a mouse model with
ful l immune system function. The team was able to achieve this using a
functional laboratory test known as "tumorsphere" assay.
The test—which shows how cells grow in culture—allowed them to
enrich for cancer stem cells.
"Studying these unique cells could greatly improve our understanding of
lung cancer's origins and lead to the novel therapeutics targeting these
cells and help to more effectively eradicate this disease," adds Morris.
"Immunotherapy is the future of cancer treatment. We are hopeful that
this new method wil l accelerate our investigation of immunotherapies to
specif ically target cancer stem cells."
The team is working to characterize how cancer stem cells escape the
body's immune system in order to develop more effective therapies that
target stem cells.
"One of the hypotheses behind why cancer therapies fail is that the drug
only ki l ls cells deemed to be 'bad' (because of certain molecular
characteristics), but leaves behind stem cells to repopulate the tumor,"
adds Morris. "Stem cells are not frequently dividing, so they are much
less sensit ive to existing chemotherapies used to eliminate cells
deemed abnormal."

Morris, isang batikang manunulat at propesor sa UC Collge of Medicine.

THE CURE OF ADVANCED CANCER BY DIET THERAPY:
A SUMMARY OF 30 YEARS OF CLINICAL EXPERIMENTATION
MAX GERSON, M.D.
from Physiol. Chem. & Physics 10 (1978)
Abstract:
Thirty years of clinical experimentation has led to a successful therapy for advanced
cancer. This therapy is based on the concepts (1) that cancer patients have low
immuno-reactivity and generalized tissue damage, especially of the liver, and (2) that
when the cancer is destroyed, toxic degradation products appear in the bloodstream
which lead to coma and death from liver failure. The therapy consists of high
potassium, low sodium diet, with no fats or oils, and minimal animal proteins. Juices
of raw fruits and vegetables and of raw liver provide active oxidizing enzymes which
facilitate rehabilitation of the liver. Iodine and niacin supplementation is used.
Caffeine enemas cause dilation of bile ducts, which facilitates excretion of toxic
cancer breakdown products by the liver and dialysis of toxic products from blood
across the colonic wall. The therapy must be used as an integrated whole. Parts of
the therapy used in isolation will not be successful. This therapy has cured many
