Two Stanford coaches havebeen named Coach of the

Year by the American FootballCoaches Association.

Clark Shaughnessy, whoguided Stanford through aperfect 10-0 season, includinga 21-13 win over Nebraska inthe Rose Bowl, received thehonor in 1940.

Chuck Taylor, who directedStanford to the Pacific CoastChampionship and a meetingwith Illinois in the Rose Bowl,was selected in 1951.

Jim Plunkett Football Honors

In 1970 Jim Plunkett became Stanford’sfirst and only player to win the

Heisman Trophy Award as the bestplayer in college football. Plunkett ledthe Indians to the Pacific-8 ConferenceChampionship with a 9-3 record,including a thrilling 27-17 upset victoryover previously undefeated Ohio State inthe Rose Bowl. He was the runaway win-ner for the trophy, garnering 510 of 1,059first-place ballots cast. He compiled2,299 points to 1,401 for runner-up JoeTheismann of Notre Dame. In additionto the Heisman, Plunkett won theMaxwell Award, was a consensus First-Team All-America, andwas namedPlayer of theYear by UnitedPress International,Sporting News, SportMagazine, the WalterCamp Association,and the AmericanCollege Football Coaches

Association. He completed 191 of 358 passes for 2,715yards, and he ran for another 183 yards, giving him 2,898yards of total offense that season (a school and Pac-8record). Highlights of the season included his 275 passingyards in a 24-14 drubbing of USC, 22-of-36 passing for 268yards and four touchdowns in a 29-22 win against

Washington, and a phenomenal 20-of-30 for 265 yardsin the 1971 Rose Bowl, Plunkett’s final game.

After finishing eighth in the Heisman bal-loting as a junior in 1969, Plunkett turneddown an opportunity to turn pro and

returned to Stanford for his senior season.“Coach (John) Ralston, all of our coach-es, and my teammates have been build-ing something at Stanford for the pastcouple of years,” Plunkett explained. “IfI were to leave now, I would alwayshave the feeling that I let them downbefore our goals were reached. Besides,we are always telling kids today not todrop out, to finish school, to set tar-gets and to work towards them. Whatwould they think if I were to drop outnow for professional football?”

Plunkett returned to Stanford forthe 1970 season and wound up hav-

ing a storybook year he would never forget. He led theIndians to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 19 years antheir first Rose Bowl victory in 30 seasons. His performancein the Rose Bowl earned him Most Valuable Player honors.He finished his career with 7,887 yards in total offense,which not only set a Stanford record but it established anew NCAA record.

He went on to become the number-one draft pick in theNFL by the New England Patriots. He played 16 seasons inthe NFL with the Patriots, San Francisco 49ers andOakland/Los Angeles Raiders. He was named NFL Rookieof the Year in ’71 and won two Super Bowl championshipswith the Raiders. He was the MVP of Super Bowl XV fol-lowing the 1981 season when he led the Oakland Raidersover the Philadelphia Eagles. Three years later, Plunkett ledthe Los Angeles Raiders to a victory in Super Bowl XVIIIover the Washington Redskins.

In November, 1991, Plunkett’s jersey number 16 becamethe second number retired in Stanford history (the other isErnie Never’s number one). He is a member of the CollegeFootball Hall of Fame and the Stanford Athletic Hall ofFame.

Led the Stanford “Wow Boys” to a 10-0 record in1940, including a 21-3 Rose Bowl victory overNebraska … Key part of the T-formation schemethat revolutionized college football, having movedfrom tailback to quarterback when the offense wasimplemented prior to his junior year (1940) …Finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in1940, and improved to third a year later …. Went onto become a Pro Bowl selection for the San Francisco 49ers, and later returned ashead coach of his old NFL team.

Led Stanford to a 9-3 mark in 1977, including a 24-14 Sun Bowl victory over LSU … Named OffensiveMVP of that game, going 23-for-36 for 269 yards,three touchdowns and no interceptions … Also ledthe NCAA in passing that season … FinishedStanford career with 5,946 passing yards, 45 touch-downs and a .604 completion percentage, whichranks him among the school’s all-time best in allthree categories … In ’77, he completed 208-of-330 (.630) for 2,521 yards and 19touchdowns.

Cardinal fullback earned All-American honors in hissenior season … Three-year letterman (1960-62)who earned his stripes as a tough, hard-hitting play-er … Also played inside linebacker … Led the teamin tackles in ’61 and ’62 … Gained 256 yards on 70carries in his career while also accounting for 238tackles his junior and senior seasons.

Best known for his game-winning 31-yard field goalwith 12 seconds left in the 1972 Rose Bowl, givingStanford a 13-12 victory over Michigan … Finishedhis career on The Farm with 197 points on 42-of-80field goals and 71-of-80 extra points … Led Stanfordwith 76 in points in 1973 on 18-of-29 field goals and22-of-25 on PATs … The 18 field goals established anew school record … Set school record with a 59-yard field goal vs. USC in 1973.

NFL Draft Picks Football Honors

On four occasions, two Stanford players were firstround selections in the same year.

In 1992, following Stanford’s 8-4 season and aberth in the Aloha Bowl, tackle Bob Whitfield wasselected by the Atlanta Falcons (8th pick overall) andrunning back Tommy Vardell was the next pick, cho-sen by the Cleveland Browns.

In 1978, wide receiver James Lofton was selectedby Green Bay (6th) and offensive tackle Gordon Kingwas chosen by the New York Giants (10th). Both

helped lead Stanford to a 9-3 record and a 1977 SunBowl victory.

Defensive tackle Greg Sampson (6th) was draftedby Houston and linebacker Jeff Siemon (10th) wasdrafted by Minnesota in 1972 after Stanford capturedits second-straight Rose Bowl victory. In 1942, half-back Pete Kmetovic (3rd) was picked by Philadelphiaand quarterback Frankie Albert (10th) was chosen byChicago.
