Lucy Cornelius 1001975 Advanced Motion Graphics 1 How to Complete a Page Turn 1) First, create a new composition in Adobe After effects. Set the composition length to 30 seconds (we can adjust this at the end if we need to). The dimensions of the composition are 1920 X 1080 at 25fps. I titled my project Comp One. 2) Let’s then import the images of the background and the main cookbook. 3) Import the background of the wooden table, along with the cookbook into your composition. Hold Shift to keep the original dimensions to scale. 4) We will then key out the green background behind the book cover. To do this, we can us a simple colour key. Go to Effect > Keying > Colour Key. You can use the colour picker tool to select the shade of green you want keying. Adjust the colour tolerance and edge thin settings, as well as the edge feather to blend the edges and make it look slightly softer. 5) We are then going to pre compose these layers mainly so that the timeline is more organised once we start importing more layers. Select the background layer and book layer individually and go to Layer > Pre Compose. We then want to make sure that all attributes are moved into the composition. Name the background layer ‘Background’ and the image of the cookbook ‘Cookbook’. 6) Now we are going to create a new composition called ‘Page One’, with the same settings as before. This is where we will import the first page that we want to turn in our book. Import the image into this composition and scale it to size. 7) We are then going to return to Comp One and import the composition.

How  to  Complete  a  Page  Turn

 1) First,  create  a  new  composition  in

Adobe  After  effects.  Set  the  composition  length  to  30  seconds  (we  can  adjust  this  at  the  end  if  we  need  to).  The  dimensions  of  the  composition  are  1920  X  1080  at  25fps.  I  titled  my  project  Comp  One.

 2) Let’s  then  import  the  images  of  the

background  and  the  main  cookbook.

3) Import  the  background  of  the  wooden  table,  along  with  the  cookbook  into  your  composition.  Hold  Shift  to  keep  the  original  dimensions  to  scale.

 4) We  will  then  key  out  the  green  background  behind  the  book  cover.  To  do

this,  we  can  us  a  simple  colour  key.

 6) Now  we  are  going  to  create  a  new  composition  called  ‘Page  One’,  with  the

same  settings  as  before.  This  is  where  we  will  import  the  first  page  that  we  want  to  turn  in  our  book.  Import  the  image  into  this  composition  and  scale  it  to  size.

 7) We  are  then  going  to  return  to  Comp  One  and  import  the  composition.

What it should look like now

8) With  this  Page  One  layer  selected,  we  are  going  to  adjust  it  so  that  it  matches  the  dimensions  of  the  original  cookbook.  Let’s  go  to  Effect  >  Distort  >  Mesh  Warp.  Adjust  the  settings  to  how  you  prefer.  I  like  to  use  1  row  and  about  7-‐8  columns.

 9) You  can  select  where  each  of  the

lines  in  the  mesh  meet  and  drag  the  corners  around.  This  is  great  here  as  it  means  we  can  adjust  the  image  to  fit  the  page  underneath.  You  can  also  use  the  other  ‘arm’  of  the  tool  to  make  the  page  appear  to  wriggle  a  bit.  Do  this  until  Page  One  matched  the  dimensions.

 10)  Once  this  is  completed,  select  the  Page  One  layer  and  duplicate  it  by

pressing  CTRL  or  COMMAND  +  D.  Pre  compose  this  layer,  calling  it  ‘Page  One  Page  Turn’.  This  is  the  layer  we  will  add  the  effect  to.

 11)  Now  select  Effect  >  Distort  >  CC  Page  Turn.  You  can  see  the  corner  of  the

image  turn  up  slightly.

What it should look like now

12)        As  you  can  see,  the  page  turn  has  been  added  but  there  are  a  lot  of  things  we  need  to  do  to  make  it  look  effective.  Adjust  your  settings  to  match  these.  We  have  changed  the  controls  to  Classic  UI  so  that  we  can  adjust  the  fold  direction  to  to  -‐90  degrees.  This  will  make  it  look  like  a  straight  fold  as  if  someone  is  opening  the  page.  I  have  adjusted  the  back  opacity  so  that  the  paper  looks  thick  and  translucent  like  tissue  paper.  I  also  adjusted  the  light  direction  so  that  there  is  not  a  shine  on  it,  as  I  do  not  want  the  paper  to  look  as  if  it  glossy.

 13)    If  you  Solo  Page  One  Page  Turn,  you  can  see  that  this  is  not  quite  right.

The  left  page  shouldn’t  be  seen;  we  just  want  the  actual  page  that  is  turning.  Therefore  you  need  to  unsolo  this  page,  and  change  the  render  settings  to  just  the  back  page.

 14)    We  then  want  to  right  click  on  the  image  >  Transform  >  Flip

Horizontally.  The  page  turn  is  now  looking  much  more  realistic.  Now  adjust  the  fold  direction  to  +90  degrees.

15)    This  is  looking  much  better  but  there  is  still  a  problem  with  the  fact  you  cannot  see  the  original  cook  book  title  page.  To  change  this  we  need  to  complete  our  animation  of  the  page  turn  first.  Use  keyframes  to  animate  how  you  want  your  page  to  turn.

 16)    Now  select  ‘page  one’.  This  is  the  layer  we  are  going

to  create  a  mask  on.  Make  sure  your  time  indicator  is  at  0  seconds.  Create  a  mask  big  enough  next  to  the  image  of  the  cookbook.

17)  We  need  to  animate  this  mask  so  that  it  matches  the  edge  of  the  page  turning.  This  will  therefore  reveal  the  page  underneath  and  making  it  look  like  a  realistic  page  turn.  Once  this  is  completed,  you  should  have  your  first  page  turn.

 18)    To  create  another  page,  we  simply  copy  these  same  steps  but  with  a  new  page.  For  example,  instead  of  creating  a  mask  on  page  one,  we  will  create  it  on  page  two,  and  remember  to  also  shift  the  page  two  layer  along  on  your  timeline  so  that  both  pages  don’t  turn  at  the  same  time.
