DURBAN DIARY: Your guide to entertainment in the city ART and ENTERTAINMENT Page 6 5 June 2009 COUNTRY ROCK: Singer Liezel Pieters is part of the exciting Route 66 cast, who will be performing at the Barnyard Theatre from 9 June to 26 July THEMBA KHUMALO SELFLESS and passionate is how Durban Natural Science Museum Director Guy Red- man has described museum volunteers at a recent cere- mony held in their honour. “We are the most utilised museum in the country and people often wonder how we cope. The truth is we could not do it without the help of volunteers who are always there assisting with initiatives,” said Redman. He saluted the con- tribution made by the volunteers in helping the museum to raise awareness about science and the natural world. Coming in for special praise was the museum’s Volunteer of the Year, Khululiwe Nxele, who received the award, plus a cheque for R500, donated by the Durban Natural Science Museum Friends Society. Nxele was nominated for the award by museum staff and other volunteers for her passion and dedication. Nxele said: “I did not expect this. I am honoured that they have chosen me. I love work- ing here at the museum and since I have started I have learned a lot.” Nxele encouraged people to join similar volunteer pro- grammes and acquire wide experience and improve their employment prospects. She said: “Learning about the likes of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace has made me a better person. “I now know what they did to make this world a better place and I hope I can contribute too,” she said. But Redman caut- ioned would-be vol- unteers to make sure they were committed and not afraid of work. “Don’t join this programme because you are bored and have nothing to do,” he said. Meanwhile, the museum has relaunched its friend’s society. It aims to support the museum’s education dep- artment and foster the dev- elopment of the institution. Chairman of the society, Jabulani Memela, said: “The society is a way of ensuring collaboration to assist us in innovate approaches to teaching.” Call Memela at 031 311 2256 or Busisiwe Gumede at 031 311 2249 for details. The annual exhibition draws entries from schools across the province that offer art as an examinable subject. Dustin Holohan, who matriculated from Michael House last year, is the creator of a particularly striking mixed media piece, entitled Inches. He said he was inspired by the movie Any Given Sunday which stars Al Pacino as an inspirational American foot- ball coach. “At the time people were very negative about the 2010 World Cup and other things in South Africa. My message with this piece is to say to people, ‘Stop complaining and look at what we have achieved in the past couple of years’,” he said. Holohan said he chose Nelson Mandela, Francois Pienaar, Mark Shuttleworth and the four South African swimmers who won gold at the Athens Olympics because “they represent the epitome of success in South Africa”. “In 1995 no one believed we could host a successful Rugby World Cup let alone win. But we did with Nelson Mandela on our side and we went on to achieve great things. Shuttle- worth became the first African in space,” Holohan said. Holohan, now a BCom student at the University of Cape Town, had this to say to his peers: “Never stop believ- ing in yourself or let anything hold you back. That is what Mandela, Shuttleworth and others have taught us. Durban Art Gallery’s Edu- cation Officer, Musa Mnc- wabe, said: “It’s meant to serve as an inspiration to emerging artists.” The exhibition runs until 28 June.
