On April 18th and 19th, they were the first students to kick off IB exams for 2011. Students work on pieces both in and out of school that now get to be displayed around BHS for other students to observe and enjoy. Each art student has created twelve to twenty pieces of original artwork to be placed on a large display board at a popular spot around the school (the library, Bulldog Corner, etc.). This proj- ect allows the students to highlight their otherwise unrecognized achievements and abilities. This public display component is not the only factor that sets this class apart from others at BHS. The students in IB art classes are allowed a freedom of exploration and ideas normally unseen in a regular classroom environment since the cur- riculum is not taught out of any type of textbook. Senior Christian Seasholtz, an IB art stu- dent, explains, “Mrs. Tuttle acts as a moderator as we create our own curriculum. The leash was set free and we students have been able to venture down any alley, no matter how dark, to find what we like and what we want to express.” The class atmosphere is also separate from the norm. The art room has been described as more calm, relaxed, and expressive than most other classroom settings. Senior Nicole Carrobis, another second year IB art student, describes, “The class atmo- sphere is a lot more casual and it takes a lot of the stress away from school.” For many of the students in the class, the alternative setting allows them to think in different, more creative ways than they can think in other classes. This provides students with an escape from the regular stress of the day. Most students are able to relax and concentrate on something they really enjoy doing. This factor also lends itself to students being naturally more interested in the nature of the class. This can be seen by the fact that the students have committed to spending two years in the class as opposed to just one year, as is typical for most classes at Bedford High School The majority of students share this enthu- siasm for the class and an appreciation of its atypi- cal length. Seasholtz states, “Students pursuing the two year program get a stronger jumping point, to find the true value of art, to appreciate and create it. Also our field trips are ‘bomb.’” In the sequence of testing occurring this spring, the IB Visual Arts examination is the first of these tests. The test occurred on the Monday and Tuesday before April vacation. It was unlike many other end-of-the-year tests in that the actual scheduled examination period consisted of an oral analysis and discussion of your own work with an expert in the field of art. In general, the IB Visual Arts program at BHS allows students to individually express them- selves and their ideas in a creative manner that other classes may not provide. It enables students to form something out of nothing–something com- pletely original that they can call their own–and display their work and talent to their peers. As put by Seasholtz, “IB art has been a vessel to express my emotions.” Page 19. Page 06. What BHS students do in IB Visual Arts II

For the past two years, seniors in the IB Visual Arts II class have worked on creating their own collection of masterpieces to put on

display as part of their artistic journey. On April 18th and 19th, they were the first students to kick off IB exams for 2011.
