A FINE morning greeted a group of twenty-odd Wangaratta Out and About cyclists who turned out on Wednesday to join in a celebra-tory birthday ride for one of the group’s mem-bers.

The ride split into three groups with some travelling through Eldorado, others through Carraragarmungee and Tarrawingee with eve-ryone finishing up at Snow Road Produce in Milawa for morning coffee.

There the resident bard and King of the Mountain, Greg Hynard, regaled the birthday boy with another one of his intimate poems.

The Tuesday cyclists travelled a circuit of Wangaratta finishing up at the Barr Reserve for a coffee break.

WANGARATTA Rangers Orange played NASC Bears at Targoora Park, Wangaratta on Sunday in the last game of the season before the finals of North Eastern Baseball.

Rangers Orange were short of a few regular players due to football commitments, but still had a full team to take the diamond.

Both teams brought in runs in the first in-nings.

Bears batting through their order to score three runs while Rangers Orange had six bat-ters face the plate to bring in two runs before the third out was made.

Bears lost one of their players early in the third innings when he was ejected from the game for misconduct towards the umpire leav-ing the team one short, but Rangers could not capitalise on having an automatic out when his turn at bat came around.

Dylan Cowan and Mark Drage shared the pitching duties for Rangers Orange with Cowan throwing an even amount of balls and strikes in his four innings on the mound, but

Drage found it hard to find the strike zone throwing twice the amount of balls as he did strikes.

Rangers could not add to their first inning’s score until the seventh innings when they brought in three runs.

But Bears had added 11 runs to lead 14 runs to five when the time ran out.

Young 14 year old Sam York took a fly ball catch for Rangers after running hard to make position at right field and Bailey Bell got his first hit in baseball only to be caught out in the outfield.

Rangers Orange were down on their batting having only four safe hits for the game while Bears had 13, two of them being home runs.

The preliminary final of North Eastern Base-ball will be played at Gayview Park, Wodonga this Sunday with Wodonga 2 playing Benalla Bandits at 11.30am in second division and Wangaratta Rangers two teams to play in divi-sion one – Rangers Orange v Rangers Black at 2.15pm.

The grand final is to be held at Targoora Park, Wangaratta on Sunday, September 8.

Wangaratta tee-ballers will play an exhibi-tion game prior to the first game starting at 10am. These kids are our future baseballers.

THE final tryouts for Wan-garatta’s men’s and women’s Country Basketball League sides took place last night, with final teams expected to be announced early next week.

Jacqui Henry is once again in charge of the men’s side, while Jason Bannerman has

returned for a second season as coach of the Lady Warriors.

Henry said the men’s team was likely to feature a host of new names this season.

“We’ve had a lot of players who have just left the under 18 program, so 17-18 year olds, trying out, so it’s great to see a lot of new faces,” she said.

“I’ve had a bit to do with most of those players, but we

have also had a few players in their early 20s who I haven’t coached before come in, so it’s exciting for me to see what they can do.

“Probably around 60 per cent of the players from last year have come back, so we will have a different side this year.

“Everyone has been very enthusiastic about it.”

Warriors teams for new CBL season to be announced soon

HEAD COACHES: Jason Bannerman and Jacqui Henry.
