Message From the Board - Message from the General Manager
Ron Botello, Board Chairman Bryant Early
Another year has gone and we now move
into 2017. A lot happened at your club
last year: South Course Bunker
renovation ($250,000), six tennis courts were resurfaced
($47,000), received a New fleet of golf carts, Men’s card
room was expanded and upgraded ($10,000), Scholarships
Program reintroduced, hired a new Director of Golf
(Bobby Haby). Projects for 2017 include: 1. The Wom-
en’s card room renovations have begun; 2. The Ivy room
contracts have been signed and the project will begin in
January, which will include an entrance to the 19th hole.
These are in addition to all the events being scheduled and
clubs that are offered. From our 1st class golf courses, the
number one Tennis program in the state, the Workout
Center, our unique Kids Club and activities for the young
and not so young. But the number one thing we have to
offer is our world class members like you, which cannot
be duplicated. If you are debating where to go for New
Year’s Eve consider the fantastic event offered here
at your club. Our staff is going all out to make this a
memorable event. I hope you all had a great 2016 holiday
season and I want to wish everyone a prosperous
and healthy 2017. The Club at Sonterra will do all
we can to make it a fun one also.
Ron Botello
Board Chairman

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope you all had a wonderful and fulfilled holiday season. First and foremost, I along with
the entire staff here at Sonterra want to thank the Mem-bership for your generosity over the holi-days. The annual holiday bonuses that you gener-ously contributed to the staff was so very much ap-preciated. We can’t thank you all enough and please know we will continue to work hard at making Sonterra a club you all can be extremely proud of.
We witnessed many changes at the club this past year and I’m pleased to say there are even greater positive changes to our beautiful club to come in 2017. We experienced many highs but also a few lows this past year, and despite some obstacles, you have always remained loyal to your club, for this, I say thank you again. Your feedback has been crucial as we have worked through the learning curve with many of our new department heads, and I humbly ask you to continue to feed us information as this is the only way we will be able to confirm that we are meeting your expectations. I can’t wait to share with you our 2017 Capital plans. Please be on the lookout for the annual State of the Club letter coming out in February highlighting these things.
Lastly, I want to take this opportunity to thank some key individuals that have served on our Board of Governors for the past two years. To Sue Colburn, Stan Hester, Vick Meredith, Rita Parscale, Todd Fields and Carol Churchill, I personally want to thank you for your time, patience, guidance and understanding. I realize that being a Board Member is not always the most glamorous responsibility, but I can truly say that if not for you and the rest of the Board, my job would be extremely difficult.
I am very excited about 2017 and all that it will bring!! I hope to see you all around the club very soon.
Until next time,
Bryant Early
General Manager

Time to get moving on your New Year’s Resolution to exercise more. One of the easiest ways to do that is to star t with cardio workouts. Let’s answer a few questions about starting an exercise program using cardio--how often we should do it, how hard we should work and why we need it in the first place. Many of us are confused about what to do because there are conflicting opinions about how much cardio we really need. The guidelines published by the American College of Sports Med-icine suggest 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week or vigorous cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week. For weight loss, you might need even more (up to 60-90 minutes) depending on your diet and other activities. It's tough keeping all these rules straight and, the good news is that you don't have to. Sometimes it's best to forget the rules and get back to basics: Cardio isn't just for weight loss.
Our Bodies Are Made to Move ‑ If you have a sedentary job, think about how your body feels at end of the day. Do you have tight muscles, an aching back, feel exhausted even though you haven't done anything physical? Maybe your shoul-ders burn from tension and your head hurts from staring at a computer screen for too long. Now, think about how your body feels after a workout. Your muscles are warm and flexible, the blood is pumping through your body, providing oxygen and energy. You feel energized, confident, proud of yourself and ready to take on the world. Our bodies are made to move--not sit around all day and yet, that's exactly what we're doing.
Next, take a moment to remember all the benefits of cardio exercise:
Weight loss
Stronger heart and lungs
Increased bone density
Reduced stress
Reduced risk of heart disease and some types of cancer
Temporary relief from depression and anxiety
More confidence about how you feel and how you look
Better sleep
More energy
Setting a good example for your kids to stay active as they get older
Notice that weight loss, while a big focus for many people, is only one benefit of cardio. Despite that, weight loss is often our only goal and not just for health, but to look good. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to look good, having that as our only goal can make exercise harder. Why? Because losing weight takes time. Where will your motivation go if the scale doesn't cooperate? Open your mind to other reasons to exercise--you might just find new ways to make exercising easier.
To get started on a basic conditioning program call the Fitness Center today at 210-496-9346 to set up an appointment.

Happy New Year to everyone! Before we get into what’s coming up for 2017 we just want to thank you again for making our Holiday Sale Event a huge success-again. As usual you were there for us shopping up a storm. The Tennis Appreciation Party was also fantastic because of you. The food, the dancing, the service and you all made this party a great closing event for our year –and what a year we had. We added more team champion signs to our collection.
USTA league play begins for many January 14th. Many of our teams didn’t end their league until December 17th—doesn’t leave much rest time. For those that
played this past year you know one league starts right after each other and sometimes running at the same time on different days. For those new to league play it can be a little daunting at first glance. Let us help you find a team or dis-cuss the many options that USTA has for you to play as much as you want.
League play here at Sonterra is healthy and still growing, but we have many members that don’t play leagues but do enjoy other amenities we have to offer. Know that we will always work on keeping the balance of activities for all types of players. We know that court availability can sometimes be tight and we work very hard to make sure all our members can get on a court at prime time. What we need from our members is to please cancel their court as early as possible so the members on the wait list can use it.
This year is going to be fast and furious and by looking at the calendar of events and league schedules it’s going to be a jammed packed year. We do have many fun events we are going to try and squeeze in there somewhere—so please keep an eye on those emails we send.
The Sonterra staff have a lot of fun and exciting things coming your way this year and we can’t wait to get started. We appreciate your support and look forward to what’s ahead.
