Hazel Swilley, of Hazen, a member of Carlisle Altruistic Club, was re- elected president of GFWC District IV, at the Spring Convention at Keo United Methodist Church, Saturday March 31. England’s Cosmopolitan Club was hostess for the meeting attended by 23 Club members and two guests. Other officers elected are Jan Pasley, Altruistic Club, present elect, Ruth Baker, Cosmopolitan Club, vice president, Chris Weems, Hazen’s Elsie McCain Club, secre- tary/reporter and Pat Aycock, Carlisle’s Progressive Club, treas- urer. The officers will be installed at the luncheon meeting on Saturday, May 5, at the Spring Convention of GFWC-AR at Hilton Garden Inn, North Little Rock. The Executive Committee opened the convention. The secretary reported that the minutes committee has approved the minutes and the treasurer gave the finan- cial report. The date for the Fall Board meeting was selected to be August 11, the next Saturday after the State Board meeting and it’s Carlisle’s time to host the meeting. Ila Chaney, Cosmopolitan Club, opened the meeting with an invocation and Hazel Swilley led the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Debbie Kehrli, GFWC- AR president was intro- duced, with past district presidents, Chris Weems, Hazel Swilley and Judy Foot. Pene Hadley, State Fundraiser was intro- duced. Ruth Baker introduced the Mayor of Keo, Nancy Tardy to welcome the group. She gave a little history of Keo. It had been started as a town in the late 1880’s and moved a mile south of the origi- nal town in 1916 to be closer to the railroad. It was incorporated as “Keo” that year. The stores in town completely burned down in 1926 and were immediately rebuilt almost identical to what they had been. She had been away a while and when she came back in 2001, and as she stopped in town and got out of her car, she said what she saw reminded her “of a Norman Rockwell painting.” She distributed pamphlets of “Keo, Arkansas, Key to a Good Life.” Department Chairmen gave their reports and presented their awards. Pat Aycock, Carlisle, pre- sented the Arts awards: First, Cosmopolitan Club; second Altruistic Club and third to Progressive Club. Five of the six Clubs were represented. Five of the annual reports were given by the president or a representative for her. Ruth Woods sent her report and the president made the presentations for Public Issues: First, Altruistic Club, second, Elsie McCain Club and third, Cosmopolitan Club. Dorothy Elmore sent her report for Conservation. The awards were: First to Elsie McCain Club, sec- ond Altruistic Club, third Cosmopolitan and fourth to Progressive Club. Linda Price sent her report for Education: First in Collaborations, Altruistic Club, second, Elsie McCain Club and third, Cosmopolitan. In Partnership, first Elsie McCain Club, second Progressive Club and third, Altruistic Club. Sue Carter presented the award in Home Life: First Cosmopolitan Club and second to Altruistic Club. Thelma Shook sent her awards for International Outreach: Partnership awards: First, Elsie McCain Club, second Altruistic Club and third Cosmopolitan. In Collaborations, First to Progressive Club. Thelma also sent the results of the Scrapbook and Yearbook contest. Carlisle Altruistic Club won first in each contest. The first place books will be judged in the State Contest at the Spring Convention. Second place in Scrapbook went to Carlisle Progressive and third place to England Cosmopolitan Club. Rosetta VanHouten sent her report on Outstanding Club Woman, and the secre- tary read the application which was entered by the Altruistic Club of Carlisle. Charlotte Bennett was named Club Woman of the Year for District IV. The report will be sent to the State Committee. The secretary also gave the Memorials for the three recently deceased District club members: Mrs. Vera Floyd, a past president of Hazen Elsie McCain Club, Mrs. Edwarda Sunderland Wayne, of Scott, a mem- ber of England Cosmopolitan Club and Mrs. Jessie Smiley Gosney, a past president of Carlisle Altruistic Club. During lunch, Mrs. Aycock presented the winners of the Ten-Penny Art contest. The winner in Class I in the category, paint - oils and acrylics went to Shawn Lokey first place, sponsored by England Cosmopolitan Club. In Class II, category, paint - oils and acrylics went to Ashley Keathley, sponsored by Carlisle Progressive Club. In Class II, category, drawing, pen and ink, and pencil first place went to Danielle Watson, sponsored by Hazen Elsie McCain Club. In Class II, category, multi-medium, including crayon, crapac, pastel chalk, first place Danielle Watson, sponsored by Hazen Elsie McCain Club, second place, Teddy Ashmore, Carlisle Altruistic Club and third place to Chris Fisher, England Cosmopolitan Club. Each first place winner was awarded a blue ribbon and a check for $20.00. The first place pieces will be entered in the State contest May 4- 6. It’s the responsibility of the sponsoring club to get the first place winners to the Convention and returned to the student after judging. Debbie Kehrli brought greetings from GFWC International and the State. She made announcements of impor- tant meetings to follow. She reminded members that the state meeting are announced in the Federation Speaks. One important item that she wants members to remember is to bring a new pair of children’s socks to the Convention to be used in the shelters for victims of Domestic Violence. The Spring Convention will be at Hilton Garden Inn, May 4-6, she said. The District is to decorate a table where the officers will sit Saturday noon with items that depict the area. The District officers will be installed during the noon meeting. Ruth Baker, Pat Hogan and Rita Farris were appointed to read and approve the minutes. The Fall Board meeting will be at Ferndale 4_h Center August 4th and 5th. Pene Hadley had the fundraising items dis- played. She also had a raffle for “spring items” to use in the garden. Door prizes were award- ed. The invitation to Carlisle of the Fall Board meeting was given by Jan Pasley. The meeting adjourned with members repeating the Club Collect. Well Spring is here. We are in full gear getting ready for our annual Easter egg hunt. We are inviting the community to come out and join the fun. Young children to the 5th grade are invited. We hope to see you there. Monday began with mail and chat. Later that morning we had bingo. That afternoon we played who wants to be a Millionaire and had din- ner and a movie. Tuesday morning start- ed out with mail and chat followed by Bible Study and then that afternoon our wonderful dietary manager fixed up some banana splits to end a great day. Wednesday began with mail and chat. Later that morning we had a game of bingo and then we had a Popsicle social. Thursday we had mail and chat followed by puz- zles. That afternoon we had Wii golf which was so much fun. Friday we began with mail and chat. Later that morning we had bingo and that afternoon we had a game of dominos. Saturday began with mail and chat. We had a soda shop and a tater tot social that afternoon. Sunday began a new month. April is here. We began with mail and chat. We had coffee shop and then had a blessed word from Bethlehem Church. We hope that everyone has a great week, and to see everyone at the egg hunt.
