United Buddy Bears – The Ku’damm Welcomes the World On 26 th June 2011, Monika Thiemen (District Mayor of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf) and the project initiators Eva und Dr. Klaus Herlitz launched the exhibition on the boulevard Kurfürstendamm They gave the many long-term project supporters a particularly warm welcome in the Buddy Bear’s hometown and thanked the following guests on behalf of all the others that remain unnamed here: The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), the international removal and transport company Haberling, the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR), the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the Wall AG, the Berlin Tourismus und Kongress GmbH , the AG City and notably the main sponsor of the Berlin exhibition, the Weberbank Actiengesellschaft . Here in Berlin, numerous international artists whose skills and creativity have contributed to the inspirational impact of this globally unique art project celebrated a reunion with the organisers and their works of art. The 142 sculptures will be presented on the grand Berlin boulevard until 3 rd October 2011, celebrating the Kurfürstendamm’s 125 th anniversary. Subsequently, they will continue their tour around the world. The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, is the patron of the exhibition. Newsletter 2 / 2011

United Buddy Bears – The Ku’damm Welcomes the World

On 26th June 2011, Monika Thiemen (District Mayor of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf) and the project initiators Eva und Dr. Klaus Herlitz launched the exhibition on the boulevard Kurfürstendamm

Unveiling the new United Buddy Bear representing Germany – designed by Helge Leiberg – marked the beginning of a fantastic programme on stage – featuring international artist from India, Kazakhstan, Mexico and other countries – thanks to the support of their embassies in Berlin. Latin American dances, African music and European tunes captivatingly described the journey of the Buddy Bears around the world .

Charity

So far, over €1,723,000* have been raised with Buddy Bear activities in aid of UNICEF and many local children’s relief organisations through donations and auctions (*reference date: July 2011)

Buddy Bear picture frame on Ku’damm

5th May 2011 - During the tour at the launch of the festivities celebrating 125 years of Ku’damm, a huge picture frame with a Buddy Bear specifically designed for the occasion and a typical Charlottenburg bench were unveiled. The sponsors of this spectacular installation are the owners of Haus Cumberland, Dirk Germandi und Detlef Maruhn. Countless cameras will click until mid-October to shoot this summer’s most desirable souvenir photo on the Ku’damm (close to the George-Grosz-Platz).

Green Buddy Award 2011

21st June 2011 – For the first time, the new environmental award of the Berlin district Tempelhof-Schöneberg was presented in cooperation with the Buddy Bär Berlin GmbH. The companies Ruksaldruck GmbH & Co. KG, Semperlux AG / Lichttechnische Werke and the Daimler AG / Mercedes Benz Werk Berlin received the award for their commitment to an eco-friendly and sustainable development Photo: (f.l.t.r.) Buddy Bear art initiative at the German Federal President’s 2011 Summer Party

1st July 2011 - The Philips GmbH as the sponsor of this social event had prepared a very special attraction for the guests in the gardens of Schloss Bellevue. Under the professional guidance of the artist Ute Faber, everybody had the opportunity to work on a large Buddy Bear (The Dancer) with paintbrush and colours. United Buddy Bears - The Minis at the World Culture Festival

2nd/ 3rd July 2011 – We gladly accepted the festival organiser’s invitation to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ‘Art of Living Foundation’ - founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar - at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The vision of this festival – to celebrate diversity and to enrich life through intercultural dialogue – matches our project’s purpose. Tens of thousands of guests from all over the world experienced this spirit within the circle of the little bears.
