2009—The Year of More...And Less!by Ralph Murphy (With Special Thanks to Eric Gross, Andrea Jeitz, MaryAnn Keen, and Anna Maki)
page 1 Friday, March 12, 2010
I get a lot of heat for studying
only No. 1 records, but strangely
enough, it doesn't usually come from
the writers, publishers or artists that
actually have one. My feeling is that
if the “business” feels it's worth
promoting, bullying or outright
buying a record to the top, they
must be pretty confident in the
foundation that the artist’s career
is built upon—the song. So, in line
with “no one throws a No. 2 party,”
this is a look at what made it to
No. 1 in 2009.
Last year's No. 1 songs
continued a trend that started at
the beginning of the decade. For
the last ten years, there has been
a substantial increase in No. 1
records. For instance, in 2009, 31
songs went to the top, up from 26
in 2008, and 21 in 2004.
The number of writers
participating in the cheese, shrimp,
speeches and backslapping
increased from 49 last year to 71
this year. That means each writer’s
work has less total time on the charts.
2009's longest-running chart records
were Chris Young’s “Getting You
Home” and Lady Antebellum’s “I
Run To You,” both at 38 weeks. The
times they are a-changing.
Race to No. 1 At 10 weeks, Carrie
Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova”
and Brad Paisley’s “Then” were
last year's fastest travelers up the
chart. Unfortunately, Underwood
was also the fastest off the charts
—on and gone in 14 weeks, while
Paisley hung around for a total of
17 weeks.
Eight records peaked in 15 weeks
or less. In addition to Carrie and
Brad, there were Kenny Chesney's
“Out Last Night," Jason Aldean's
“Big Green Tractor,” Rascal Flatts'
“Here Comes Goodbye,” Toby Keith's
“American Ride,” Sugarland's “It
Happens" and Lady Antebellum's

Artist/Writers In 2008, fifty percent of the No. 1s
were written or co-written by the artist.
That trend accelerated this year, with 19
of the 31 No. 1s written or co-written by
the artist. Almost two thirds of all No. 1s were “inside” jobs.
How that will affect publishers' business plans will be almost
as interesting as watching how non-performing writers
respond to this new challenge.
Tempos Well, somebody rolled the dice, went with a waltz and
danced all the way to the top. “Already Gone” got the job done
for Sugarland and gave them the first of two No. 1s for 2009.
The other 30 chart-toppers were all in 4/4, with tempos
2009 American Idol finalist Michael Sarver recently joined ASCAP as a writer/publisher member. Little Champion Music's Rachel Thibodeau has been producing sides for Sarver at Blackbird Studio, including the single "Ferris Wheel," co-written by Thibodeau, Curb Publishing's Kyle Jacobs and UMG Nashville's Josh Kelley. (L-R): Thibodeau, Sarver and ASCAP's Earle Simmons.
Danny Gokey was in the Atlanta area for the March 2 release date of his album My Best Days. He performed, signed autographs and made a cool music purchase at the Mall of Georgia’s Best Buy location.
Lambert Is Hanging With The Boys Miranda Lambert has
selected a long list of male artists
to accompany her on the various
legs of her upcoming Roadside
Bars & Pink Guitars tour. So far,
Lambert has enlisted James
Otto, David Nail, Randy
Houser, Cross Canadian
Ragweed, Eric Church, Jake
Owen, Wade Bowen, Luke Bryan and Chris Young. Each
act will join Lambert for select dates throughout the tour.
“I like pink guitars and puppies so how scary can I be?”
laughs Miranda. "Seriously, it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ve
been on tour with some great male headliners so I thought
it’s only natural that I invite some talented guys on my first
official headlining tour!”
Bellamy Brothers Song On Broadway Venerable country duo The
Bellamy Brothers recently
authorized the use of their song,
“Get Into Reggae Cowboy” for the
upcoming Broadway play Enron.
The play is a tragic comedy that
follows a group of flawed men and women in a
narrative of greed and loss using music, movement and video.
The Bellamy’s song has been choreographed using
interpretive dance and is featured throughout the production.
Enron is directed by Headlong Theater’s Artistic Director
Rupert Goold and will debut on April 8 at Broadway’s
Broadhurst Theater.
In other Bellamy news, the brothers are celebrating their
35th Anniversary with the release of The Anthology Vol. 1.

Spin Zoneby Jon Freeman It’s time for some warmer weather, and also time for a
new No. 1 song: Keith Urban’s “‘Til Summer Comes Around”
has reached the chart’s top spot after a multi-week run by
Blake Shelton’s “Hillbilly Bone.” Urban’s latest is part of a
long string of CountryBreakout No. 1s that includes “Only
You Can Love Me This Way,” “Kiss A Girl,” “Sweet Thing,”
“You Look Good In My Shirt,” and “Everybody.”
Following Urban are Capitol labelmates Lady Antebellum
with “American Honey” at No. 2, and Eric Church with “Hell
On The Heart” at No. 3. Zac Brown Band’s “Highway 20 Ride”
has muscled its way to No. 4 with a big gain of 128 spins,
and Carrie Underwood’s “Temporary Home” sits tight at
No. 5. Joe Nichols’ “Gimmie That Girl,” Justin Moore’s
“Backwoods,” and Rascal Flatts’ “Unstoppable” all see large
gains in spins and are rewarded with higher positioning
inside the top 10.
An abundance of new and quickly-rising singles are skipping
over the competition on their way up the chart. Toby Keith’s
“Every Dog Has Its Day” is out front, climbing to No. 27 in its
second week of activity. Jason Aldean’s “Crazy Town” is
not far behind at No. 31 and picks up Greatest Spin Gain
honors. Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” picks
up 312 spins and moves to No. 34 after only three weeks.
Also quickly catching on are relative newcomers Emily West’s
Keith Urban"Til Summer Comes Around"Capitol Nashville
Signs are showing all around that summer in Nashville might actually be on its way, but Keith Urban’s “‘Til Summer Comes Around” has already arrived. This week the slow jam takes over the CountryBreakout™ Chart’s No. 1 spot with a gain of nearly 70 spins. Urban was recently a guest on a special Oscar night episode of Jimmy
Kimmel Live, where he performed this song and made a guest appearance in a side-splitting skit called “Handsome Men’s Club” alongside Matthew McConaughey, Sting, Ben Affleck, and more.

for its first top 10 appearance.
Jason Aldean"Crazy Town"Broken Bow Records
On his rocking new single “Crazy Town,” Jason Aldean depicts the insane hustle of aspiring country singers in Nashville and the tough road to stardom. Fortunately, that time of stuggle for Aldean seems to be over as his third album Wide Open is certified Platinum with three No. 1 hits to its credit. CountryBreakout™ panelists have given their approval to “Crazy Town,” which earned the weeks’ biggest gain of 449 spins and moved to No. 31. Aldean is currently headlining his own Wide Open tour and will soon join Brooks & Dunn for their Last Rodeo farewell tour.

Jason Mitchell"Slow And Steady"DMP
Jason’s Mitchell’s smoldering “Slow and Steady” is beginning to please the ears of programmers, as it moves on to the CountryBreakout™ Chart at No. 65 and our highest debut of the week. The son of producer/songwriter Dan Mitchell (“If You’re Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band)),” Jason Mitchell grew up in Nashville surrounded by the music industry and spent his early years interested in everything but music. His love for singing and performing came later, during college, when he landed a singing role in the cast of a local tourist attraction. Soon he had produced his own CD, as well as raising $25,000 for Vanderbilt Hospital’s Burn Center.
