Fourth Edition, Winter 2000 "Padigo" Keeps Our Hearts and Tummies Full by Brenda Fortune, Silverdale, WA One of the best memories I have about growing up in Binalonan, is the practice of "padigo" - when you bri ng over a bowlful or plateful of whatever you have cooked (or what you are eating) to your neighbor so that he/she, too, may sample the delic acy. Kuyang (Abner) and I were fortunate enough to have grown up on a block where several kabaggian families lived: Uncle Primo and Auntie Elda Verceles - just a stone's throwaway from the district parsonage, Uncl e Alex and Auntie Luisa Verceles, Apong Gracing, Uncle Ador and Auntie Puring Estigo, Uncle Doro and Auntie Margie Costales- a short walk up the street, Uncle Celing and Aun ti e Rebi ng, just over the fence from Auntie Margie's. About a tri cycl e ride away was Auntie Ely and Uncle Manuel's house. When we were not eating at any of these homes, we were receiving from their residents a steaming bowl of chicken tinola or frogs cooked in coconut milk or lilot balatong (glutinous rice with crushed, roasted munggo beans). Indeed, food went around in that neighborhood and not only were our tummies always satisfied, so were our spirits. I had always felt that I lived in several homes all at once. I was a happy and satisfied kid. We're many thousands of miles and many years removed from that place and time but I am so glad to note that even though we are scattered all over the world, the practice of "padigo" is not yet dead among us. We now have to be creative to send the item but we manage to have it delivered somehow. A fe w months ago, the cook at "Lumpia Factory" in Silverdale, WA told me she was going to visit Asingan to at tend a wedding and would I know anyone who might be able to sew a special dress fo r her? Instantly, Auntie Elda came to mind. Together with Auntie Elda's phone number and address, I also sent my "padigo": a box of smoked salmon. When Manang Carmen came back, she brought with her Auntie Elda's own "padigo": some smok d baby bangus and savory pickled papaya (achara). Yummy! Mom and Dad are at least 14 hours by car from me, yet we "padigo" each other, either through the mail or through someone traveling to and from both ends. Sometimes, they 'd send over frozen "dinardaraan," "pinapaitan," dilis, "chicken adobo" for the girls or frozen vegetables. Sometimes, we'd bring over fresh oysters or crabs. Our kakabaggian in Alaska use the airplane to send frozen fish to California and Hawaii. Usually in a box so big that the seafood it contains could feed an entire army. When Don and I visited Auntie Aida in England, Mama and Vivian did not miss the chance to send "saluyot." "parya" and "pindang nga bangus" to her. Aside from using other people, the mail or the plane, we also use the US Navy aircraft carriers! This method wins the most creative award of sending "padigo" so far. One time I received a call from a US Navy guy from Everett, WA saying that he had some seafood in a box for me from one Ely Penera of Kodiak. I asked how he .. ... continued on p. 7 .... 1

SEVERA OCHOCO 1916shy

The last surviving child of Melecio and Isabel Ochoco Severa Verang Ochoco

was born on November 7 1916 in Binalonan Pangasinan Although she only reached fourth grade Lola Verang is literate and can also speak English Like her older sisters Adriana (Anit) and Engracia (Gracing) Verang loves to trade jokes and laugh a lot She enjoys cooking and loves reading the Bible She likes music too although she is really not known for her singing (unlike her sister Gracing) One of the things she cannot stand is labada nga nalitem (white laundry thats not white enough) So on any given day you can see Lola scrubbing clothes until they are blindingly white starching them and then ironing them At almost 84 Lola Verang still enjoys good health She also enjoys her two daughters Elisa Ely Penera ofKodiak AK and Edith Bautista of Bued Binalonan her 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren She has

lived all her life in Binalonan Pangasinan

A Conversation with Lola Verang

My conversation with Lola Verang took place across thousands of miles over the telephone It was 6 0 clock in the morning fn the Philippines but Lola was already up and middotabout waiting for armusar (breakfast) She asked me to speak a little louder because she was a little hard of hearing but she never did ask me to repeat myself throughout the conversation answering every question with a strong voice wit and

Lola Severa Verang Ochoco celebrating her 82nd her characteristic laughter I was quite birthday in Binalonan Pangasinan

amazed that at nearly 84 her mind is still as sharp as ever She switched

between Ilocano and English effortlessly When talking about her family and the fact that she is the only surviving grandma Lola became a little emotional but she soon regained her composure and went on telling stories good-naturedly Here are some exerpts from that conversation The longer parts have been translated directly into English from Ilocano

ILOCANO lJNf RAN5LAfABLE5 (by Brenda Fortune)

Being the most prominent language in our multilingual family Ilocano tends to be the lingua franca ofchoice whenever kabaggians get together I really appreciate being able to speak Ilocano not only because I can earn a living with it but because it is such a rich tongue Amang Parans proverbs would lose some of their lyrical beauty when transshylated into another language The jokes we tell each other would not have their intended punch and so we would not be able to laugh as hard (something we really like to do)

They say that language is culture If this is true some terms in llocano provide us an interesting glimpse into our values and everyday lifestyle Below is a list of words that I call unstranslatables in the sense that there exists no exact equivalent for them in English If you think of any other words please send them in

Agpalpa (v) - to rest (better ifyou put your feet up) after having had a meal Running around after eating is believed to cause indigestion

Agalunos (v) - to eat the viand (main course) by itself meaning without the ubiquitous rice Its an extravagance really

Makikaarruba (v) - literally to go neighboring It could be as casual as talking over the fence or actually going to anothers house to chat No appointment necessary Just drop in anytime

Agmano (v) - the practice ofkissing an elders hand as a sign ofdeference and respect The term is actually borrowed from the Spanish expression a la mano (to the hand)

Kilabban (n) - the term used to describe cold rice ie rice that is not newly-cooked and has been left sitting covered in the pot or in the bowl The verb agkilabban means to eat the leftover rice and viand from the previous meal more commonly done when hunger pangs strike after a nice siesta before dinner (usually three oclock in the

afternoon)

Kimmot or boridek (n) - affectionate terms for the youngest child

Darundon (n) - a child born unexpectedly to parents who thought they were done with having babies The age difference between this child and the one before himher could range anywhere from eight to eighteen

Look for more untranslatables in the January issue Ifyou are fluent in another language and you have interesting untranslatables to share just send them in We would love to hear from you

The Schmidts Strange Encounshyter With a Moose

Meanwhile shortly after Grace s accident Mia and VIktor Schmidt of Eagle River AK together with Mias dad Leonardo Dore Costales almost got involved in a collision themselves when a full-grown moose buck suddenly crossed their path on the freeway They were on their way to Marshall s dedication service in Anchorage Gods grace and VIktors quick reflexes may have very well saved them The huge animal seemed to have appeared from nowhere and was coming straight at the Schmidts Chevrolet Tahoe when VIktor maneuvered a quick swerve to the right lane and back thus avoiding a potentially deadly collision with the moose Thank God no vehicles were on the right lane Full-grown moose can weigh up to thousands of pounds and hitting one at full speed is very dangerous to say the least The incident rattled everyone but thank God there

were no injuries Not even to the moose

Kimmot or boridek (n) - affectionate terms for the youngest child

Darundon (n) - a child born unexpectedly to parents who thought they were done with having babies The age difference between this child and the one before himher could range anywhere from eight to eighteen

The Schmidts Strange Encounshyter With a Moose

Meanwhile shortly after Grace s accident Mia and VIktor Schmidt of Eagle River AK together with Mias dad Leonardo Dore Costales almost got involved in a collision themselves when a full-grown moose buck suddenly crossed their path on the freeway They were on their way to Marshall s dedication service in Anchorage Gods grace and VIktors quick reflexes may have very well saved them The huge animal seemed to have appeared from nowhere and was coming straight at the Schmidts Chevrolet Tahoe when VIktor maneuvered a quick swerve to the right lane and back thus avoiding a potentially deadly collision with the moose Thank God no vehicles were on the right lane Full-grown moose can weigh up to thousands of pounds and hitting one at full speed is very dangerous to say the least The incident rattled everyone but thank God there

were no injuries Not even to the moose

knew Auntie Ely and he said he had met her and Uncle Manuel while his ship was docked in Kodiak for a few days I imagine a conversation must have begun among them and when he mentioned his ship was going back to Washington State Auntie Elys ears must have perked up and she told him she had a niece there too Then Auntie lost no time in rushing home diving into her freezer and filling a sizeable box with halibut hooligan clams and crabs This box Mr Hope Beltran US Navy had to keep in the ships mess freezer for a week because it had to reach Brenda Fortune in Silverdale in good condition Needless to say I received the package (Hope and his wife hand-delivered it to me) with much appreciation not only for the good things in it but for the manner by which it was sent

Is there a more delicious way to show our love and affection for each other Iffood were really the way to someones heart we certainly know how to do it

In the July 2000 issue of Kabaggiall we wrote about the possibility of holding a grBlld famil reunion some time 2005

o mBllY of us liked the idea a lot So based on the enthusiastic responsc we have received it looks like WE WILL have a reunion less than five years from now Isn l that exciting

Billy Verceles ho teaches at Luzon Nazarene Bible College (LNBC) has confirmed that the school is available during Christmas break and we will be able to ren t the facilities al PIOOOO (roughly $227) per night per person (wow what a deal) Of course this rate will chBllge since we are talking five years from now but if it does the increase will probably be minimal A kitchen crew composed of LNBC students will also be available Vacation time at LNBC is usually from December 11 through JBllUary 6 Again the venue Blld dates are tentative If you have other suggestions please let us know as soon as you are able The sooner we know when Blld where the reunion will be the sooner we CBll plal1 (and save) for it AgYBlllBll karni kakabaggian
