WELCOME TO PADDLESPORT 2015

Join us for Paddlesport 2015 at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ on March 27, 28 and 29. This annual event draws manufacturers and exhibitors of gear and equipment from the kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddleboard industry, along with outfitters, clubs and schools. Participating in Paddlesport is a great way to introduce yourself to the paddling community and learn about SUPs, kayaks, canoes and accessories. Manufacturers’ reps are here to help make sure you are getting into the type of boat, board or gear that’s right for you. Paddlesport is the largest show of its kind on the East Coast of the US. This is a great opportunity to see the new models for 2015—many on hand to see for the first time. New in the standup paddleboard line-up is Starboard Paddleboards, featuring the Blend board and an Elite touring series. Joining us this year is Tidal Roots, featuring gorgeous wooden SUP boards made in Maine. Earth Paddleboards will be unveiled for the first time to the public, showing off its construction of sustainable products like bamboo and cork decking. New to the show is ORU Kayaks, which inspired by origami, offers extremely packable kayaks for storage at home or on the road--going from box to boat in five minutes. Current Designs introduces the Equinox series and has upgraded the Vision series of kayaks. Old Town is introducing the new solo canoe, NEXT, and Hobie launches the new Mirage Drive and revised cockpit

layouts and seat for most models. Wilderness Systems, Official Fishing Sponsor of Paddlesport 2015, will introduce the Thresher series fishing kayaks and new seating in the Ride series of kayaks. We’re happy to feature Backwater Paddle Company’s Assault hand paddle--a great low-cost addition to any hunter or anglers set-up, and it’s made right here in the USA. Make sure to stop by Orion Coolers, next to the Jackson Kayak booth, for state-of-the-art coolers. Ruffwear gear for dogs will be at Paddlesport for the first time this year. Paddling clothing from Outdoor Research, Kokatat, Stohlquist, Level Six and Show Sponsor NRS all return with new and exciting products. The top manufacturers in PFDs and paddling gear will be on hand including Astral, MTI, Stohlquist, Kokatat and Hobie featuring the new inflatable PFDs. Returning for a second year will be our In-show Demo Pool in the main hall. Kayak fishing demos, standup paddling and yoga paddleboard demos will all take place here. Read about the speakers here in the newspaper and check out the updated schedule of seminars and demonstrations online.

New for 2015! For those of you with children 10 and over, join us for kids in-water demos and a Saturday morning seminar at 9:30 am for families and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to find out how to get your kids paddling and keep them engaged on the water.

Be sure to put the Reel Paddling Film festival on Friday night at 6 PM on your calendar. Catch the top films from around the world this year and your donation goes to help Clean Ocean Action right here in our backyard. Paddlesport wouldn’t be the show to come to on the East Coast without the help from many clubs, guides, schools and organizations that participate. If you are looking for paddling places or a meet up group or club to go paddling with, you will find it here. Outfitters, guides, schools and local parks

departments will be on hand to answer your questions and offer recommendations on trips and courses for you and your family. The fun doesn’t have to stop in March at Paddlesport--be sure to visit our shop in Brick, NJ. We offer on-water test paddling seven days a week and we’re sure to find the right boat or board for you in our large selection of models-- one of the largest on-hand inventories of any shop in the US.

We specializing in custom outfitting for fishing kayaks and we repair and install on site. Our local “Classic” demo weekend event at Ocean County Park in June is another great way to find the boat of your dreams. Nestled at the intersection of Route 88 and Route 70, The Jersey Paddler has been providing quality paddle craft for over 50 years and we appreciate your continued support. Thanks for visiting us at Paddlesport 2015!! See ya’ on the water, Chris MacPhee, Jersey Paddler

New Gear Highlights for 2015By Chris MacPhee

Backwater Paddle Company - The Assault Handpaddle is a great addition to any sportsman’s kayak. A handy item to have when

stalking your favorite fishing spot from a kayak. Duck hunters use the Assault Hand Paddle to stealthily maneuver their kayak for the best shot presentation and game retrieval. Paddle sport photographers use the hand paddles to position their boats for maximum subject exposure and background framing. Paddle sport adventurers use the hand paddles for close quarter maneuvering in tight spaces in lieu of their seven-foot kayak paddle.

BUFF UV – Check out their seamless multifunctional headwear that protect athletes on the windiest Alpine slopes, the hottest deserts and plenty of rivers, lakes, roads and trails in between. VEW-DO Balance Boards are hand crafted in Vermont. Vew-Do Balance

Boards are a great addition to off water

training for core engagement. Vew-Do is continuing to develop and bring new products to market for rehabilitation, sports training, and most importantly, wholesome fun! Contour SUP Lifejacket by Stohlquist - An ultra low-profile inflatable belt pack PFD that provides comfort and security, without the bulk of traditional inflatable PFDs. Perfect for SUP paddlers, recreational boaters, and anglers looking for minimal coverage.

NRS Hydroskin Apparel - When your clothing’s adaptable, you’re adaptable—to conditions, situations, opportunities. NRS HydroSkin apparel gives you a range of options between wearing no immersion protection and wiggling into a wetsuit.

Three neoprene thicknesses and a variety of tops and bottoms let you layer to match the weather and water, while paddler-specific

designs ensure friction-free freedom of movement.

Werner Carve Hooked - There’s no better way to sight fish for your favorite species than from a stand up paddleboard.

A longer, more slender design is easier on the body without sacrificing power when you move from spot to spot or need to

fight a head wind. Werner now offers 7 paddles with the HOOKED design and color option for the avid outdoorsman and angler.

Kokatat Idol Drysuit - Kokatat introduces the Gore-Tex Idol dry suit

that separates completely at the waist giving paddlers the versatility of a dry suit and dry top in one garment. The SwitchZip full separation makes the Idol much easier to put on and take off than traditional dry suits—a game changer in drysuit design. Available in both male and female fits.

Stohlquist Shift Drysuit - Offering great flexibility, the Shift is Stohlquist’s newest touring drysuit. The Shift features: an integrated sprayskirt tunnel, Captive Zip self-entry technology, zippered neoprene side

and chest pockets, a relief zip, a removable hood, and a unique stand-by mode.

While it looks like separate jacket and pants, the Shift is actually a 100% dry, one-piece suit. THULE Aeroblade - Now available in BLACK!!! Premium, aerodynamic load bars provide an exceptionally quiet ride and superior carrying performance.

Thermarest Treo Camp Chair - The patent-pending Treo camp chair delivers big chair comfort in an exceptionally small package. Delivering the comfort and ease of use of a big chair, it packs entirely into

its own tripod base, making the Treo Chair as easy to bring along, as it is to relax in. Hobie H-Rail Accessories - The new H-rail systems extruded aluminum rail provides many options for

mounting accessories to a strong corrosion resistant platform. From cup holders, tackle bins, rod holders, and ram mounts the H-rail is allowing anglers to bring everything out on the water with them. Old Town NEXT Paddle - Available in four bright colors with fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene blades that are lightweight and durable. The asymmetrical, slightly curved blade shape combined with a lightweight fiberglass shaft produces smooth and powerful strokes.

Hobie H-Crate - With tons of room for fishing gear, easily removable for transporting your tackle and gear. Breaks down in seconds. The H-Rail carry handles are great mounting

areas for H rail accessories.

Yak Attack - The light to medium duty GTSL90 series comes in 6 different colors to take customization to the next level. Its narrow profile

is made from a high end, super strong polymer, and includes hardware. BlackPak - This crate system has 10 stations for rod holders, which can be mounted

at a variety of angles for a total of 50 possible

positions. The top rails are designed to accept MightyBolt accessories, allowing you to directly attach your VISICarbon Pro, PanFish, or other MightyBolt compatible accessories. Includes lid and 3 rod holders.

NRS Boundary Shoe - The NRS Boundary Shoe is knee

high, waterproof and warm. Great for those wet, soggy put-ins and portages. Individually tested to ensure waterproofness. The waterproof 5-mm neoprene upper has glued, blind-

stitched and double-taped seams to keep your feet warm and dry.

Hydroflask Growler - Though designed principally to keep beer chilled, carbonated and optimally contained between destinations,

New Gear Highlights for 2015 See you at Paddlesport 2015! Once again Jersey Paddler has provided us with a booth to help us get the word out about our 100% free program. This year we will be in booth #180 by the pool.

Heroes on the Water Serves our Nation’s warriors by providing healing and rehabilitating kayak fishing outings that are physically and mentally therapeutic through our nationwide community of volunteers and donors.

Founded in 2007, our unique kayak fishing program allows the participants a chance to decompress from the stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation. Warriors enjoy these benefits while on guided fishing trips held in local communities around the country.

Participants receive basic kayak fishing and paddling instruction, angling clinics and paddling classes for participants with skill sets ranging from beginners to the most experienced paddlers.

The program also assists these personnel in adapting these newly developed skills to their new abilities. Adaptive kayaks, kayaking accessories and angling equipment is offered on an as needed basis to accommodate a soldier’s particular needs.

Our program is unique in that it is a long-term activity, not a one-time event. We believe that the effectiveness of the program is a direct result of engaging the wounded military personnel for the long-term.

Paddling with Kids Quick TipsTo help create your own memorable family paddling experience, join us for these special sessions for kids and families at Paddlesport: Kids in Kayaks: In-Water Demo; Scouts in Kayaks: In-Water Demo; and How to Get and Keep Kids Excited about Paddling! See session descriptions for additional details, and go to www.jerseypaddler.com to pre-register your kids for their own in-water paddling session (each session is 10 minutes).

Plus, here are a few quick tips as you begin your family paddling journey…Paddling with Kids – Quick

Tips to Get You Started Time spent in a boat with the kids is time well spent…and easier than you might think. How old your kids are when they start paddling will drive a few of your family’s initial decisions. And the choices you make early on can pave the way for a great experience for your family – for years to come!

The Necessities With a boat or 2 (or stand-up paddleboard/SUP), a couple of paddles, a personal flotation device (PFD) for each paddler, a towline, and a simple rack for transportation, you’ll have all you need for years of quality family time.

How Old Are Your Kids? Each child is their own unique person in every way,

and their individual traits – like sense of adventure, confidence, comfort with the water, discipline level, size and age – will drive where you begin. Here are some guidelines to help you get started. Remember that these are guidelines, and you’ll need to consider more than your child’s age.

Kids 6 and Younger This is a good time to dust off that old sit-on-top kayak in the back of your garage, and take the little one out for a spin. For kids younger than 6, you may want to introduce them to paddling on your boat – whether a canoe, tandem kayak,

Page 18: Paddlesport 2015 Newspaper & Show Guide

www.jerseypaddler.com18

or sit-on-top kayak. They can learn to paddle, get the feel of a boat and PFD, and enjoy the ride – all within the comfort and safety of Mom, Dad, Aunt or Uncle!

Kids Older than 6

Kids over 6 may be ready to navigate the waters in their own small boat, within your watchful care. Today there are options for boats built specifically for kids, with room to grow. If the young ones get tired paddling on your family outing, be sure to have a towline at the ready, which includes floating rope, bungee or shock cord, heavy duty clips and

float. You might want to bring a towline for each young paddler on the trip, just in case!

Tweens and Teens If they haven’t tried stand-up paddling (SUP) by the time they approach the tween or teen years, your kids – and you – might be surprised by how easily they pick up SUP paddling. The low center of gravity makes most SUP boards remarkably stable. In warmer weather, frequent (and not accidental) plunges in the water may be the highlight for your kids. Paddling 2-to-a-board with their siblings or friends can bring hours of entertainment and inspire seriously fun SUP “racing.”

For More Information and Helpful Guidance. The team at Jersey Paddler is happy to talk you through how to get started paddling with your kids, how and when to transition from paddling with you to paddling their own boat, places to go for family-friendly paddling, what equipment and gear you need or might want, how to properly fit your child with a PFD, and how to tow a boat with

a towline. When you’re ready, you and your kids can test paddle boats with us at Forge Pond to find the right boat for your family. Visit www.jerseypaddler.com for upcoming outings for family paddling.

Fond Family Memories and Life Lessons Learned from Growing Up a Paddler By Cheryl Durrua Tocket

As we approach nearly 55 years of Paddlesport, I find myself reflecting upon how the core of the sport has remained unchanged after all these years, as well as how many days my family and I have

spent enjoying countless hours on one body of water or another. All these years later, it occurs to me that the core of the sport is just that, the simplicity of dropping your boat in the water and enjoying the day.

Granted, times (and equipment) were simpler in 1960. To be fair, I was still a glimmer in Walt and Judy’s eyes then but by the later 1960s when my

designated seat was the boat cushion in the center of the canoe, things surely hadn’t changed that much. The station wagon carried the canoe to Forge Pond, paddles and “jackets” were unloaded and we would head upstream to look for frogs and the Great Blue Heron. It was a wonderful way to grow up. Even when John came along, sharing the center of the boat separated by a thwart, we could “help” paddle or simply dangle our arms over the gunwale in the water, our eyes squinting in search of a turtle in the tea-stained water. Dad was in the early stages of creating the Jersey Paddler out of the back of his Sunoco Station, the gas station that his own grandfather had begun a generation before. Canoes were the watercraft that Walt envied as a kid, as he sat in his little rowboat in Forge Pond. “They were so sleek and graceful,” he recalls. It was our good luck, John and mine, that he realized that dream and allowed us a lifetime of fun.

That’s the thing about these small boats, canoes and kayaks – kids love them! A child old enough to sit up can settle into the middle of a canoe or sit-on-top kayak and get out on the water. A child as young as three years old can handle a small kid’s kayak and realize the excitement of taking control of his or her own watercraft. This independence builds a world of self-confidence. It was about the 2nd grade when John broke free from the boat cushion and moved on to his own kayak. I was always far more

confident in a canoe and would often take the bow seat with Dad or Uncle Bob Crane. As my skills improved, I graduated to a solo Curtis canoe of my own and a solo whitewater canoe. It was with endless pride and amusement, while paddling Class 3 whitewater on the Youghiogheny River in Western Pennsylvania, that I heard from the rocks on the shore, “Wow, that’s a GIRL paddling that boat!” It was only natural to me, though. I’d been paddling since I could walk, literally.

My family would paddle most weekends, and often before or after dinner on summer evenings. It was great fun. When we were very small we stuck to the creek behind our house or went down the road to a nearby stream or pond where we were never too far from home if someone got tired. If we were in our own boat, there was always a stern line to grab on to for a tow home. Often times, as we got older, we would make a day of it with two or three other families. The cooperation involved in having to maneuver a boat down Cedar Creek with its twists and turns and low-hanging branches builds a great deal of character in kids – and they don’t even realize it. The teamwork involved in helping one another down the river, and the exercise involved in racing one another for five snake turns, is priceless. Yet it wasn’t all bliss and John Denver songs…but what is life without a little struggle? “We’re stuck!” we’d holler from a sandbar. “Builds Character!” Aunt Sally would call as she and Mom paddled past (often backwards, but that’s a story for another day). It did build character, though. We learned that struggle is a necessary part of life and we learned that we had the power to conquer adversity. We learned to respect the water, how to navigate our way through challenges and work with each other so we could safely enjoy our time on the water. And – looking back at these life lessons – we learned to appreciate nature, being outdoors, and spending time together with our family.

Highlights of the New 2015 Kayaks, Canoes and SUPsBy Chris MacPhee

KAYAKS

Feel Free has added the Lure 13.5 to its successful line of Lure kayaks. With a removable sonar and electronic pod, the Lure series now has more length to get you to your fishing spot faster. The Native Slayer Propel 10 is a fishing machine as well as a fun, comfortable pedaling and paddling vessel. With an overall length of 10’ and fitted hull weight of 57 lbs., it is easy to handle

both on

a n d off the water. Anglers will especially enjoy the quick turning radius and of course the ability to pedal in reverse for on-the-fly stopping or backing up to fight the catch of the day. Big overall capacity of nearly 500 lbs for any size angler.

Wilderness Systems has really gone deep with the introduction of the Thresher 140 and 155, now offering the angler a true

offshore fishing machine. Longer lengths allow the angler to get out to the Bass blitz faster.

Wildersness Systems’ new AirPro Max seat is a Phase 3 premium fishing seat that is compatible with the Ride model family from 2013 to current models. This high/low seating system gives kayak anglers the competitive advantage they need to sight fish from the seat of their Ride. The durable, breathable, mesh fabric seat moves smoothly from a low to high height position (and vice versa) without any clipping or loosening of straps. There is a third recline position for kicking back and relaxing.

Epic Kayaks, known for their superior surf ski designs, has gone out of their comfort zone and produced what looks to be the answer to an entry level surf ski: the Epic V7 Rotomolded. It is lightweight, extremely efficient, and easy to handle. The V7 is outfitted with a carbon fiber footboard and pedals and the hugely popular Epic-designed bailer. In addition, it features an aft storage compartment with a lightweight, waterproof hatch that puts the V7 in a class of its own.Current Designs has reality upgraded the looks of the Vision series in 140 and 150,

adding a two-tone color scheme to the deck. This kayak will allow any paddler to stand out from the crowd. The Vision series offers the paddler a true kayak fit and feel while developing a myriad of skills at their own pace. Current Designs found room in the family to invite a new smaller paddler with their Equinox GT and GTS. These touring kayaks are the smaller brother and sister to the popular Solstice GTS and GT. The equinox features clean lines and great tracking, just right for the afterwork evening paddle or an overnight tripHurricane has new items in both Sit-on-tops and Touring kayaks. The skimmer line with its lightweight thermoform plastic contruction is a win for the paddler looking to shave weight. Well Hurricane has

answer the weight issue in a tandem by offering the new Skimmer Tandem 140T—14 feet long, 33 inches wide, and weighing in at only 65 lbs. The skimmer tandem will be a well-greeted, lightweight addition to

the sit-on-top tandems on the market today. The Sojourn series is a new exciting day-touring series for Hurricane. These boats available in 3 sizes—the 135, 126, and 146 will satisfy paddlers of all levels. Their moderate rocker, hard chined hull will have you lean turning your first day on the water.

Hobie Kayaks has continued to improve the hugely popular Mirage drive, now with Glide Technology, the addition of roller bearings at key friction points reduces resistance for a smooth and efficient ride. Also newly available in most Mirage models is the Vantage CT seat. The Vantage seating system provides the comfort needed for long stretches out on the water. The seat-back, bottom, height, and lumbar-support are all easily adjustable. New for 2015 is the addition of the Hobie Pro Angler 17T, a fishing

machine with comfort, stability and room for everything you need, including another person. Powered by the Mirage drive system, this tandem is packed full of features for tackle configuration and fitted with an H-rail you can really customize your boat for a great time on the water.

CANOES

Old Town’s new Next incorporates both canoe and kayak characteristics for a fun, remarkably easy and natural paddling experience. It has a pronounced tumblehome and lower profile for easier paddling. Ideal for both double-bladed

and single-bladed paddles. 3-layer hull features subtle rocker for straight, smooth tracking. Removable Element seating system offers enhanced comfort and performance. With the loss of Royalex to the canoe industry, many companies have gone back to producing quality lightweight canoes in composite lay-ups and materials. We are excited to have We-no-nah and Mad River Canoe both showcasing the classic Mad River Explorer and the We-no-nah Adirondack this year at Paddlesport.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARDS

New to Paddlesport this year is Starboard Paddleboards. Starboard offers a complete line of paddleboards for every level of paddler. The range of

boards and material layups is amazing. Starboard has boards for Kids, Yoga enthusiasts, Touring, Surf, All Around, and Lightweight Race. Be sure to check out their booth this year. New Models for 2015 include the Big Easy, a full all-around

Soft-Tec available in 3 models has combined the lightweight performance of the Ace-tec boards with the user-friendliness of a soft top. Great for entry level to advanced paddlers looking for a lightweight, safe alternative for flat water or small surf. BIC SUP adds an 11-foot Cross SUP to the already popular model Cross 10. The Cross 11 is perfect for yoga, fitness, all around and surf since this larger board with higher volume accomodates a larger paddler and gives greater stability for SUP Yoga.

Surftech has updated the line with new models such as the Discovery series of Bamboo Laminate boards in new colors and styles. Also out this year is the updated Universal series in 3 different sizes to fit all paddlers made out of Coretech.

Portable Stands

Two Kayakers Crossover to Stand Up Paddling By Chris Raab and Pam Eng Chris and Pam met in the sporting goods store parking lot. They knew of each other as members of the New Jersey sea kayaking community but had never met before. After a quick introduction, they headed off in different directions. Chris has been a canoe and kayak instructor in the area for many years and Pam is an athlete with an outdoor recreation resume who was increasingly involved in the kayak community. Before long they were crossing paths at paddling events everywhere. Unknowingly, each had purchased a stand up paddleboard (SUP) and the next time they crossed paths for a sea kayak event, there were two boards on the roof racks as well. Since then they have been training and teaching together

with a focus on increasing skills but always having fun!

Chris recalled the first time he tried a SUP, “I thought, wow, cool perspective over the water, same basic strokes as canoe and kayak, I wonder if I’m standing on this right... Splash! I was hooked. I wanted to learn about the foot work and to surf a board”. Pam was hesitant about a SUP on her first time but was drawn to that close relationship with water. “In other words, I fell and laughed a lot,” said Pam. As we have continued to learn SUP together, we made some unexpected observations and discoveries.

What to expect Anyone can SUP! For new paddlers, SUP is something you can have fun with your first time out! If you choose a calm place, new paddlers will have a great time getting familiar with the board and water right away. We have noticed that in introduction classes, people are concerned that they will not be able to balance on the board. But, they quickly realize that on an appropriately sized board, you’ll be up and going in no time. With a little instruction you can be working on advanced turns and footwork right away. For experienced paddlers, our existing paddling skills make

stroke work on the SUP easy to learn and offer some new ideas that transfers back to canoe and kayak. But, the most interesting aspect for us is the footwork. Chris said,” I was really interested in walking around on the board and its connection to surfing. I admit it seemed cool and I wanted to do it!”

Crossover vs. takeaway concepts As a kayaker switching to SUP, we’ve enjoyed learning to step up body motion as a primary factor in making turns. We, as kayakers, know edging and body position helps turn a kayak. Take it up a notch on a SUP by edging rail-to-rail and changing the pitch nose-to-tail by walking forward and backwards to carve turns and pivot. “I’ve always compared the forward stroke to a golf swing. You keep working on it over a lifetime,” said Chris. The SUP forward stroke adds a hinging motion to torso rotation, making the forward strokes truly a full core body stroke which seasoned kayak and canoe paddlers will enjoy experimenting with. Finding new strength and balance on a SUP has been a rewarding challenge that benefits performance in other paddle sports and we are as excited to share these skills as we were to learn them.

Yoga Lots of people have made the connection between yoga, core fitness training and paddle sports. As kayakers and canoeists, we noticed how yoga helps condition the body for paddling. But, more importantly, good form in yoga is the same as good form in paddle sports. SUP takes that relationship to a whole new level since you’re on your feet. Footwork is key for SUP. Effective placement of feet on the board will make the ride all the better. If you practice yoga you’ll be familiar with a lot of the movements on the board.

Fitness Since SUP is a full body workout, it’s a great way to stay in shape. From paddling calm flat water to high intensity race intervals, the need to stay balanced on the board engages those core muscles while using your upper body to paddle. It’s a wonderful way to spend time outdoors with family and friends while working all muscle groups at the same time. The intensity of this cross training workout depends on the water conditions. People are padding in rivers, lakes, bays, surf, etc.

Speedy new adventures Back in October, we learned a new term that ramped up our excitement about SUP paddling. “I have to admit” Chris said, “I thought at first that SUP was cool to play around with and I wanted to surf. But, I never thought I’d want to

paddle any distance on it”. That was until one Sunday in late October when we learned the term “Down winder”. We went for a 12-mile paddle down a river on an outgoing tide with a 20-25 knot wind at our backs. It turned into a 3-hour long surf. It was easily one of the most fun days we can remember!

Gear We have many times lamented about the gear so we have to mention it. All you need is a board, leash, paddle and PFD (personal floatation device) and you’re ready to go. You can set yourself up for around $1,200 with some nice stuff, which makes the start up price point appealing. The gear is easy to handle - you can pack light for paddle boarding. Chris says, “I can carry everything from the car to water in one hand, jump on and go! It’s freeing!” Don’t get us wrong. You can spend a lot more and we love our high-end sea kayaks and gear but...

With a little help from my friends Here at Jersey Paddler’s Paddlesport, Pam and Chris will be giving an interactive seminar on SUP movement called Walking the Plank. Come over for a gentle workout that introduces some of the body movement you’ll be using on your board. This summer, Chris and Pam will be offering classes at the Jersey Paddler where a first timer can learn the basics, experienced paddlers can use existing skills while having a new experience or, experienced SUP paddlers can tune up their techniques.

On June 14th, start your summer off with a SUP tune-up! Come tune up the basic skills needed for a summer of SUP fun. We will cover basic board control, footwork, maneuvers and rescues in a day of paddling and play. We will guide you through the skills you’ll need to enjoy a

summer of SUP fun! Be ready to laugh, play, and learn in this very wet class!

On July 18th, Walking the Plank with this highly active class. We will have you on your feet moving through the various stances and foot movements, look at various paddling stances and how to move between them. With the use of movement exercises, we will change board trim from nose-to-tail and rail-to-rail as we integrate foot movement into board maneuvers that will dial up your SUP performance and enjoyment. Also, we will work on shuffles and cross-stepping exercises to get you to walk the plank!

On August 16th, join us for SUP Form & Fitness. Whether you’re new to SUP or have a few SUP races behind you, it’s always good to review your strokes, footwork and conditioning. SUP is a full body, low impact workout that not only tightens your muscles but also improves your balance. We will help refine strokes for efficiency, activate core muscles, tighten those pivot turns, and most importantly, help you develop a fun and effective SUP workout!

Most of all, remember that SUP is wet sport so have fun with it!Chris Raab is an ACA certified level 2 SUP Instructor and Instructor Trainer, Canoe level 2 Instructor and Instructor Trainer, and level 4 Coastal Kayak Instructor and Instructor Trainer.

Pam Eng is an ACA certified level 2 SUP Instructor, ACA trained level 3 Coastal Kayak Instructor, and is British Canoe Union 3 Star aspirant.

Adventure Kayak

Sailing by Al Stillman

My name is Al Stillman from Kayak Sailing Magazine and the Capt. of Jersey Paddler Hobie Island Club. I have been kayaking for over 30 years and have been in many boats over those years and just about all of them came from the Jersey Paddler. Over the last 10 years my passion for sailing and kayaking started coming together and my need to learn more about rigging kayaks for sailing became a mission. Today’s kayak sails make it easy to take on and off the kayaks and also allow you to install outriggers to sides of your kayak for stability and safety. What is kayak sailing? What is Adventure Kayak Sailing? Well for me it’s the ability to create ultimate kayak adventures, which take me up and down the east coast every year to new destinations. It’s the ability to look at Google Earth on the computer and say I’m taking a week or two off of work and plan to explore new areas and survive with the gear that I pack in the kayak. Still at 45 it creates irresistible excitement for me to plan a kayak sailing trip and set up the gear needed to complete the adventure. Adventure Kayak Sailing encompasses many of my other hobbies like hammock camping and backpacking. In order to create multi-day kayak sailing adventures you need the right camping gear, cooking and sleeping gear, which all need to be packed into or on top of your sailing kayak safely. Adventure Kayak Sailing gives you the ability to pack your kayak for multi-day trips that are even longer as the sail increases your range, and outriggers allows you to sleep on your kayak and to cover more miles every day. Adventure Kayak Sailing allows the kayak fisherman to fish and move without the need to paddle or peddle. It allows the offshore kayak fisherman the ability to troll bigger baits in deeper water, reaching distant islands, reefs and ocean canyons previously out of the range. What’s pretty cool about kayak sailing is that there is no right way, or even a wrong

way! As long as your kayak is harnessing the wind and you’re sitting back in your seat and coursing through the waves with your bow of the kayak cutting through the water, you are now kayak sailing. You’re free as a bird! One of my favorite things to do as I explore sailing different kayak hulls and

kayak sails is watching how they let you cut through the waves at speeds you can’t normally achieve with just paddling. I was able to achieve my fastest speeds when shifting the weight on the kayak to the stern to get the bow of the kayak up and on top of the surf or chop. In my Hobie Adventure Island sitting on a gear box behind the seat, I was able to get speeds of 14 mph--it was amazingly cool.Kayak sailing equipment has really taken off over the last few years. Leading the charge is the Hobie Adventure Island, which is one of the fastest sailing kayaks that you can buy and comes in a complete kit with everything you need. Rumor has it that the new 2015 Hobie Adventure Island is a must see. There are companies like Balogh Sail Designs, Kayak Sailor, Falcon Sail, Flat Earth Sails, Pacific Action Sails, Wind Paddle and Advanced Elements that offer kayak sailors many options to enable any kayak to be equipped with a sail kit. Many kayakers that I know who are getting into kayak sailing love these after-market sail kits because they get to configure and rig a kayak any way they want, which is very cool. If you are interested in kayak sailing I encourage you to seek information and advice on the Internet and ultimately try some before you buy; otherwise you might be buying more than one.

For someone looking into kayak fishing there is no better place to start then fluke fishing. When people think of fluke fishing they often quickly think of hitting the off shore reefs like the Shrewsbury Rocks, Sea Girt reef, and the Manasquan Ridge, well as a kayak angler we have to pick and choose the days out front. While those are all known to produce large fluke, a kayak angler does not always have the weather to make it out to those locations. What they should look at are the rivers and Back Bay spots. Early season fluking for a kayak angler is best time to land a dream fish. KAYAKS: Depending on the type of kayak you have a sit in or sit on top will determine where you can fish. If you have a sit-in kayak look at the bays and rivers to be your prime spots, if you have a sit-on-top kayak your choices are endless, from the bay to the rivers and ocean it is all available to you. I currently have a Hobie Outback and a Pro angler 14 both of which are sit on top kayaks. When selecting a kayak you have to think of a few things, where will you be fishing primarily, what you carry and your stability. If you are a big guy like myself I look for a wider kayak for the added stability. If you are an average size guy or gal then you can choose any kayak you like. There are so many different brands to choose from your best bet is to go to the Jersey paddler and Demo the kayaks you like before you purchase one. It is vital to ensure you are comfortable in the kayak

before you buy it, so you save the time and hassle of having a kayak you are not comfortable in. The difference between the two are drastic, a sit in kayak will allow you to have more tackle readily available with in arms reach but if you take on water you will need to bail it out due to there being no drainage in them. A sit on top kayak will allow you to carry the same tackle but

not as readily accessible the most commonly used tackle storage used on a sit on top kayak is a milk create that is outfitted with rod holders. The Milk create is set in the rear compartment and used to store you tackle boxes and drinks and the like. There are a few things you will always need a PFD, whistle and if you are out at night a visible 360* light so boaters can identify you. ROD/REEL: The tackle for a kayak angler can be lighter than what is traditionally used on boats. I use 7’ bushido spinning rod that was made for me by Jersey Tackle, but you don’t need a custom rod for fluke any 7’ medium action rod paired with a 20 or 30 size reel spooled with 10-20lb braid will work. If you are a casting rod guy look for a similar set up. I currently use a Diawa tournament series rod 7’ ¼ to ¾ ounce with a Diawa Lexa 100 spooled with 15lb power pro. Either spinning or casting rods will work it is solely based on what you prefer. TACKLE: I use a variety of different bucktails and plain jig heads. This past season I was turned on to the SS rattle tail Bucktail. It has a built in rattle that adds sound to the lure. When it comes to jig heads I prefer ¼ to ¾ ounce but mainly use ½ ounce Kalin’s bullet heads. Any brand of bucktail or jig head will do for fluke fishing. BAIT: With all the new soft plastic baits out there I have gotten away from live bait myself but live

bait or cut bait will still work if that is what you want to use. Whether fishing in the River, Bay or Ocean I always use Berkley gulp, since it has hit the market I haven’t fished live bait for early season fluke. What has worked for me is the swimming Mullet 4” and 5’ Pearl White, Pink, and Nuclear Chicken. While other colors do still produce fish I have had better luck with these colors. Another good early season choice is Berkley gulp shrimp 3” or 4” in Natural color or New Penny. In the spring the bait fish are just showing up with the fluke and tend to be

small and scattered but there are always plenty of shrimp to be gorged on. When it comes to live or dead bait you can’t go wrong using Killies (Mud Minnows) and squid or spearing. Any of the above will entice a bite from a hungry flatty. Presentation: The type of rig you use will determine the way you present it to the fluke. If you fish a standard

fluke rig you bounce the bait in a vertical soft raise of the rod and a slow drop to the bottom by doing this you will have constant contact with you bait and avoid slack in the line. If you are like me and prefer a dropper loop high/low rig with the bucktail or jig on the bottom, your presentation can vary from fast short bounces or slow consistent bounces always maintaining a tight line to feel the strike. If you like to use the dropper loop rig with the bucktail or jig on the loop and either a plain hook or a fluke candy fly you have the same option as the high/low rig for presentation. The presentation will ultimately be dictated by the fluke’s aggressiveness whether to work it fast or slow, if you are a visual learner

I would recommend going to YouTube and looking up John Skinner he has very informative videos on fluking.LOCATIONS: When looking for a good fluking spot in the early season you want to look for darker muddier flats and drop offs. The reason I say that is the water temp at the start of the season tends to be in the low to mid 50’s, the darker bottom will hold in the heat better than sand therefore draw the bait and fluke into the area’s to stay warm. At this point in the season a one or two degree difference could be a huge factor into them eating or not. I mainly fish the Barnegat Bay, Manasquan River and Sandy Hook. You want to work the ledges and drop offs mainly because fluke are ambush predators. When drifting with the current you should try and maintain your position on the river edges in 6-12 foot of water as this is the perfect location for a fluke to wait for an unsuspecting bait fish or shrimp to pass by with the current. The fluke will lie on the bottom facing the direction of the current this allows them to grab anything that gets close. Don’t be afraid to try new areas and techniques good luck and I hope to see you all out on the water soon Tight Lines.

Spring Stripers in Raritan Bay By Chris Fuller Even though there are so many great places to fish in New Jersey, one of my favorites is the Raritan Bay. It’s located between New York and New Jersey and its fishery include Striped Bass, Fluke, Bluefish, Tautog, Weakfish and others. However, between April and May is when I am there the most. I am on the lookout for migrating Stripers. They seem to start turning on when the water temperature is about 50 degrees. Some of the best things about the Rar-itan Bay are the location and accessibility. Launching your kayak in Raritan Bay is relatively easy. The Port Monmouth area has a few good places to launch, but hav-ing a beach cart to get your kayak to the shoreline is necessary. But like anything on the Jersey Shore, parking can be an issue, so arrive early. I usually get there about 30-45 minutes before dawn so I can rig my kayak just the way I like it. I don’t like to rush so getting there early leaves me with extra time to take care of the things I need. Having the right gear on the water is important for safety and practical reasons. Plus, when you aren’t worried about your gear, you have a better time. Although, it may take a few times out on the water to figure out exactly what you want. Here are a few essentials I never fish without: a life vest (PFD), a VHF radio, my YakAt-tack Visicarbon Pro safety flag and my cell phone. I also wear dry gear because the water is still cold that time of year. Safety

is of the utmost importance when fishing from a kayak so always be prepared and try to never fish alone. When I hit the water I like to use 7-foot medium action rods with bait caster reels loaded with a 30lb Power Pro braided line tipped off with a 36” 30lb fluorocarbon leader. I often troll Daiwa SP Minnows or Rapala X-RAPs. I like to keep my trolling speed right around 2.5MPH. From time to time, schools of bunker break the surface so I’ll snag and drop one hoping for big stripers waiting beneath the school. I’ll also throw jigs with Hogy soft plastics. Yet, no matter what you use, your heart starts racing when you hook one of these fish. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll be taken for a little sleigh ride. I’m a catch, photo and release guy all year, but I am extra careful during this time because some of these fish are full of eggs and should be released to spawn. The Raritan Bay is a great place to fish no matter what time of year, especially if you’re looking for diversity in your catch-es. Just be safe, be smart and have fun.

About Chris Fuller:Chris Fuller grew up in Long Branch, N.J. and has been fishing his whole life. He got his first taste for the sport when his dad took him to a local river to catch snappers using bamboo poles. About five years ago, after years of fishing along the Jersey Shore, Chris got an itch to try something new, was intrigued by kayak fishing, and jumped right into it.

Kayak Fishing Barnegat Bay By Dan Tholen

The Barnegat Bay, 42 miles of water located in Ocean County, New Jersey, is a kayak fisherman’s par-adise. Growing up in Forked River, in the heart of the Bay, I spent many days and nights fishing, crabbing, swimming, and boating in its majestic waters. As a kid, my father would take me out on our McKee Craft Skiff to drift the channels for fluke or to spend the day crabbing on the East side of the Bay. As I got older I started to venture out on my own fishing for fluke, striped bass, weakfish, bluefish, and the usual dozens of other species found in the Barnegat Bay Estuary.

Now thirty-four, I spend most of my fish-ing days on my Hobie Pro Angler 14 as part of the Hobie Fishing Team. I seldom ven-ture out on the boat anymore, but all that knowledge gained as a child helped me to be-come the fisherman I am today.

Barnegat Bay is a unique ecosystem. It is home to hundreds of differ-ent species of fish, mollusks, crustaceans and more. In the spring, the weakfish are usually the first to arrive and not long after the gator blues start to invade the Bay. Weakfish are a spooky fish and the best times to target them are at early morning or dusk. Casting light bucktails tipped with bubblegum zooms are always the hot bait. Drifting along the channel edges near My-

ers Hole and Oyster Creek Channel are some good spots for the beginner kayaker.

Blues start to arrive mid-April and trolling small plugs like Rapala X-Raps or SP Min-nows work best from the kayak. The blues are usually all over the Bay this time of year so you are bound to find them. Some of the best fishing I have ever had is casting pop-pers at first light along the flats on the West side of the Bay. Nothing beats a bluefish launching itself to inhale a popper.

Striped Bass move in late April and May and things really heat up in late May into June. Launching along the beaches along Long Beach Island and Lavallette and Ortley Beach can produce some of the best fishing along the Jersey Shore. Locating the huge schools of bunker are usually not a problem this time of year, as you can usually see them finning or you will see a dark mass or oil slick on the surface. Snag and drop is the most common method of fish-ing for stripers when the bunker are around. Kayaks are the stealthy and a great way to get right on top of the school of bunker and hopefully the bass are un-derneath. Trolling large plugs like the X-Rap 20 Diver is a great imitation for bunker. Last year I experiment-ed with trolling Tony Maja Bunker Spoons in the #2 size and did very well.

The heat of the summer is all about fluke in the Bay. Drifting bucktails and Gulp! In Double Creek Chan-nel, Oyster Creek Channel, High Bar, and the Sedges

puts a lot of flatties in the boat. White and Chartreuse bucktails in the ¾ - 1oz size are best and I found that the 6” Gulp! Grubs in nuclear chick-en tipped with mackerel strips work best.

As you can see Barnegat Bay is a magical place full of endless kayak fishing opportunities. Whether you live close by or are making a day trip from PA or NY, it’s well worth the drive to see what it has to offer.

- When not on the water, Dan Tholen keeps busy as Volunteer Guide for Heroes on the Water, Webmaster and Recruitment Committee Member of the Forked River Tuna Club, and with Lacey Marine.
