Guiding the 80-odd youngsters here is M Elavarasan (41), a resident of the same locality. The football coach shares his experiences. ‘I started to play the sport from eighth class. While I was pursuing my ninth, I got an opportunity to play in the division level with Thilak Meeting Club, and later with Da- wood football team as a sub-junior’, he begins. ‘I subsequently joined MFC (Ma- dras Football Club), where I played for two years. However, I was left disappointed soon after college, as I was expecting to get to the big league after playing several tourna- ments. I therefore refrained from playing the game for a while’, he adds. It was around this time that Elavar- asan’s friend Saravanan motivated him. ‘He is one of the members at MFC. He asked me to join as a guest player. For a year, we played under super division. I then met my old friend, Shivaji, who is working as a PT teacher at PSB School in KK Na- gar. He asked me to join as a coach there. I worked for seven years and formed a football team. It was after that stint, that I joined this academy at Trustpuram’, he recalls. His football academy has eventu- ally come a long way from ten stu- dents to the current 80. ‘It has been only six months and this transition in the class strength has given me happiness and deter- mination’. Speaking on his achievements, Elavarasan states, ‘There was a State-level football match at Ma- harashtra to which Chennai was shortlisted. About 18 students were selected for the games, and I was given the chance to coach them. We eventually won the tourney. I was also honoured with the Best Coach award and Sriram, one of my students was given the Best Player award. Later, we also won another match at Kerala where I was again given the same award’. One of his memorable experienc- es was the one when he had to go to China. ‘Every year, China conducts the Gothia Cup. This year, they selected three boys from the under-12 cat- egory and a camp was conducted at Mahabalipuram, where I trained them. Even though we did not win, it was a good learning experience’, he notes. Apart from Elavarasan, two other coaches - Dinakaran and Sudhakaran also teach at the acad- emy, it is learnt. All is however not rosy for this train- er who wants better facilities for the students. ‘During the rainy seasons, the playing ground becomes a pool of water. There is hardly any space left to practise during such times. I wish the Corporation would look into this issue and provide us amenities that can help us in coaching the chil- dren better,’ he concludes. A resident of Velacheri, he has now become an inspiration for many in the neighbourhood. He said, ‘My interest in the game started when I was very young. However I started playing it formally only when I was in Plus One. But I had to stop it as I had to concen- trate on my Board exams.’ He add- ed, ‘After two years of wait I started playing professionally. I began my training and went on to participate in matches.’ He declares that his inspiration is the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. ‘His hard work had brought him lots of fame and fortune. He has achieved so much in this sport and I have seen all his matches.’ Recalling his very first match, Ka- ran said, ‘My first game was con- ducted in Nehru stadium. I won it and many applauded me for my performance. That was my start- ing point and it paved way to many other matches.’ Speaking about his family, he elabo- rated, ‘My parents were very support- ive from the start. I come from a mid- dle class family and even though my parents are not able to support me fi- nancially, they try to make ends meet. I am trying hard to make them proud.’ ‘I have participated in many matches outside my college and won medals,’ he said with a smile. It did not stop there, he continued his training and then got selected in State level competi- tion. ‘Unfortunately, due to my care- lessness, I lost the match. What I learnt from my mistake was that, one should never get one’s head out of the game. Now that I have learnt this, I will not make the same mistake again. His parents are quite proud of their son, they said, ‘We have never worried about our son or his training. We somehow man- aged to get the money he requires to keep his practice going. We just want him to succeed in life.’ Aware of his hard work, many clubs have stepped in and offered to sponsor Karan to train. ‘This is very encouraging, With this help, I can totally focus on my game. I will leave no stone unturned to make my parents and my country proud,’ he concluded. For more details, contact 8667230240. Packs a punch Velacheri youth makes it big in boxing Karan Kishore India is no more a weak nation, but a strong country. You ought to know how India resolved the Dokalam issue with China, espe- cially when most people across the globe were anticipating an India-China conflict. If India was a weak country, it could not have been in a position to resolve the Dokalam issue with China. - Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh
