Toni D’Anca Director, Pacifica Public Programs

Pacifica’s tradition of captivating and

innovative public programs is in full swing for fall and winter.

A writer’s workshop in early November will lead participants on

a unique exploration of their own personal myth.

In January, noted psychologist and

author Donald Kalshed will present

a workshop on the consequences

of early life trauma, followed by a

supervisory colloquium for clinicians.

An examination of Shakespeare’s

work within the context of Depth

Psychology will begin in January

with four weekly online sessions,

and culminate in a March weekend

workshop on the Pacifica campus.

A symposium on C.G. Jung’s Red Book, in February, will

feature an unprecedented gathering of leading experts on this

masterwork. A rare exhibition of limited edition fine art prints

of 77 Red Book images will open during the symposium.

Beginning in January, a four-week evening course for women

will explore the eternal wisdom of the ancient Inanna Myth.

And, in March, we present a special day in the extensive and

surprisingly varied gardens that grace Pacifica’s Lambert

A Writing Workshop with Dennis Patrick Slattery

Pieces to Parts, Parts to Whole(ness) Re-membering Our Narrative IdentityExperience reveals that our narrative lives are not always seamless, coherent or even comprehensive until they are re-membered, piece-by-piece and part-by-part so we begin to discern a formed wholeness. Gaps are frequent and should be welcomed, for where we fill in the gaps our personal myth is present and potent. Often these gaps are filled in with central and foundational reference points, which might be best understood as our key reverence points. Mythically, our points of reference comprise our loci of reverence where what we most revere emerges. These points of reference are like mortar that assists us in joining and cohering the bricks of experience that otherwise would not adhere; they increase stability and allow us to build a home of not one but many stories. In mythic consciousness we celebrate the gaps and pay close attention to where they reside and what we fill them in with. The mortar is the stuff of our personal myth.

In this writing retreat we will draw on our own re-membered life events and give them a form primarily through writing, but also through body movement and painting images, as well as responding to and writing poetry. By offering the soul various venues in which to imagine, we will both discover and create further structures of our narrative identity and its patterned presence within the larger collective myth that surrounds us. We will also explore those moments in our lives that have remained unlived and where we have refused the call to adventure, said “no” to life, preferred to be “called later” to its invitations and chosen to forget what may now be calling to be re-membered.

Please leave your laptop at home and bring your journal and pen to write long hand in cursive. Some of the writing meditations will be used from the book, Riting Myth, Mythic Writing: Plotting Your Personal Story by Dennis Patrick Slattery. What will emerge in this retreat is a greater awareness of each of our own narrative truths.

The Lost and Recovered Soul in the Psychotherapy of Early Trauma

Supervisory Colloquium for Mental Health Practitioners

A Workshop with Donald Kalsched

A Colloquium with Donald Kalsched

When inter-personal trauma strikes the developing psyche of a child, a split sometimes occurs in which an innocent part of the personality (true self) retreats into the unconscious where it continues to live in suspended animation as a lost soul. Deprived of this lost spark, the outer personality (false self) struggles to survive in a de-animated and soul-less world, often falls into depression, and sometimes seeks psychotherapeutic help. As psychotherapy begins, however, a dramatic struggle often ensues within the therapeutic relationship. This struggle results from the fact that an unconscious “vow” has been made deep within the psyche of the trauma survivor, never to allow the lost heart of the self (with its childlike innocence) into relationship again. The lost soul secretly “wants” to emerge and re-engage life, but dissociative defenses (constituting an archaic self care system) prevent this return, encapsulating the true self and leaving it imprisoned by the dark and violent powers of the archetypal world—what Jung called “possession by a Spirit.”

In this five-hour colloquium, clinicians are invited to present their clinical work to Dr. Kalsched, who will both supervise the cases and teach from the material presented. In

Donald Kalsched, Ph.D., is a Jungian psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist. He is a senior faculty member and supervisor with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and teaches and leads workshops nationally and internationally. His celebrated book, The Inner World of Trauma: Archetypal Defenses of the Personal Spirit, explores the interface between contemporary psychoanalytic theory and Jungian theory as it relates to clinical work with survivors of early childhood trauma. His recent book, Trauma and

the Soul: A Psycho-Spiritual Approach to Human Development and its Interruption, explores the mystical dimensions of clinical work with trauma-survivors.

This constitutes a therapeutic problem for which “love” is not the answer—or at least only part of the answer. How the psychotherapy process, with its combination of intimacy and separateness, libido and aggression, insight and embodied experience, invites the lost soul back into relationship, will be the focus of this workshop. Dr. Kalsched will show how the splitting and dissociation occasioned by early trauma, are gradually healed in the slow relational process of depth psychotherapy.

choosing cases, participants are encouraged to select vignettes that include both transference and counter-transference material and also dreams or other imaginative products of the psyche. This colloquium is exclusively for mental health practitioners, and is limited to no more than 20 participants.

The Art and Transformative Psychology of C.G. Jung’s Red BookAfter a long period of self-reflection and self-experimentation, which he called “confrontation with the unconscious,” Liber Novus or the Red Book emerged from Jung’s psyche in elaborately written and beautifully illustrated form. Through the process of losing and regaining his soul, important tenets of his life’s work with the soul and psyche were birthed. After living a life in the family vault, the book emerged, was expertly digitized, and published. Six years later, The Red Book, with its exquisite images and provocative messages still captivates our imagination and travels the world, now in yet a new form as fine art prints.

This symposium brings together Jungian analysts, scholars, and artistic thinkers for a weekend of critical and creative dialogues about Jung’s contributions to science, religion, psychology, art, and perception. We will celebrate Jung, the visionary creative artist, and explore Jung, the scientist. The weekend will begin with the opening reception for an exhibition of Red Book limited edition fine art prints. Join us for a stimulating and provocative weekend in Santa Barbara.

SYMPOSIUM PRESENTATIONSVisionary Science in Analytical Psychology: From The Red Book to the 21st Century with Joseph Cambray

Comparing Jung’s written works prior to his experiences that led to The Red Book, with those after he stopped working on it around 1930, major differences in his conception of “science” are apparent. Exploring the shift in worldview that emerged from the Red Book, along with several scientific sources from the German Classical and Romantic periods, we can see a more integrative, holistic form of science was being sought by Jung. These influences contribute to his post Red Book cosmology found in his later works, especially his monograph on synchronicity.

Jung in Dialogue with the Soul: Is Jungian Psychology a New Religion? with Lionel Corbett

In 1922, in an active imagination, the soul tells Jung that he has received a revelation that he should not hide. His calling should take priority, and his calling is the new religion and its proclamation. Jung is startled by this, and has no idea how to carry out this task. This lecture will address the question of whether Jung’s psychology represents the beginning of a new spiritual form that is arising alongside our existing traditions.

The Artist Despite HImself with Peter Frank

C.G. Jung refused to regard himself an artist, yet his interest in art was deep, and had extended in his student years to studying the rudiments of painting. This honed sophistication clearly manifests in the ambition and complexity Jung brought to the visualizations of his dreams in the Liberi Primus and Novus. This presentation will explore the questions: Can we call Jung an ‘artist?’ And if so, what kind?

Art, Technology, and Preservation of Jung’s Red Book for the Future with Hugh Milstein

In 2007, Jung’s Red Book was released from the family vault for the first time in decades and given to Hugh Milstein from DigitalFusion to evaluate and archive for future generations. Hugh will reveal the technological transformations that have occurred in the last 11 years, allowing this masterwork to be printed with amazing clarity as fine art prints.

Lionel Corbett, M.D., trained in medicine and psychiatry in England and as a Jungian analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Dr. Corbett is a core faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute, teaching depth psychology. He is the author of Psyche and the Sacred: Spirituality Beyond Religion, The Religious Function of the Psyche, and The Sacred Cauldron: Psychotherapy as a Spiritual Practice.

Peter Frank, M.A., is art critic for the Huffington Post and Associate Editor for Fabrik magazine. He is former critic for Angeleno magazine and the L.A. Hugh Milstein is co-founder and president of DigitalFusion, a leading creative services company in Los Angeles. They are known worldwide for the capture and reproduction of fine art pieces and their archival storage. Hugh was recently named to the “100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photographer Magazine.

The Differentiation and Transformation of the Feminine in Jung’s Personal Journey with Nancy Swift Furlotti and Willow Young

The figures of the archetypal feminine engaged Jung in his journey and in the process both were transformed through their ongoing dialogue of active imagination described in Jung’s Liber Novus, The Red Book. This presentation will examine the presence and transformation of the myriad aspects of the feminine as she appears in her various forms, such as Salome, the cook, and the snake.

Jung’s ‘Theology’ of the Dead with Sonu Shamdasani

In Liber Novus, Jung articulated what may be termed a ‘theology’ of the dead, which formed a central aspect of his personal cosmology, and encompassed, but was not reducible to, his scholarly psychological works. This talk reconstructs the formation of this ‘theology,’ drawing out the role it played in his life and work.

February 21 through April 4, 2014 at Pacifica Graduate Institute

DigitalFusion’s Imago Novus series has exclusively released limited editions of 77 of Jung’s full-page drawings from The Red Book, authorized by the Jung family. They will be on display at Pacifica through April 4th. View the prints and order online at theredbookprints.com/pacifica. Prints are also available from the Pacifica Bookstore.

Nancy Swift Furlotti is a Jungian analyst. She is a past president of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and the Philemon Foundation. Nancy is Chair of the Film Archive Committee that oversees the Remembering Jung Video Series. She is the co-editor, with Erel Shalit, of The Dream and Its Amplifications.

Sonu Shamdasani is Philemon Professor of Jung History at the Centre for the History of Psychological Disciplines at University College London. He is the author and editor of numerous works, including The Red Book, C.G. Jung: A Biography in Books and, with James Hillman, The Lament of the Dead: Psychology After Jung’s Red Book.

Willow Young, M.A., M.F.T., is a core faculty member and Chair of Pacifica’s Counseling Psychology Program. She is a Jungian analyst member of the C.G. Jung Study Center of Southern California. She is currently researching Jung’s volumes and seminars, including the Red Book, which address his thoughts on diverse cultures and people.

The splendid grounds of Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Lambert Road Campus are the result of more than 20 years of thoughtful cultivation. The 13-acre campus has evolved from an abandoned horse ranch into a unique melding of Mediterranean gardens with native California flora and edible landscapes that form a green belt around the campus. In addition to applying the best horticultural and ecological principles, Pacifica has reintroduced garden elements reflecting historical occupations on the site.

Join Landscape Manager Marshall Chrostowski and Professor Michael Sipiora in an aes-thetic and intellectual engagement with this beautiful location. Conversational presenta-tion of relevant themes from Pacifica’s lecture halls—soulful engagement, poetic dwelling, and the thought of the heart—will be interwoven with tours of the gardens. We will focus on specific sites, highlighting the horticultural, ecological, historical, and psychological contexts in play. A healthful lunch will be provided utilizing food grown in the gardens.
