The 155 kilometre upgrade between Woolgoolga and Ballina is the last highway link between Hexham and the Queensland border to be upgraded to four lanes.
Roads and Maritime Services’ Pacific Highway Project Office, Pacific Complete and its contractor partners are working together to deliver the project. The delivery partner model is based on the approach used to oversee construction of infrastructure for the London Olympics and supports collaboration and innovation by bringing businesses, workers, consumers and suppliers together. It encourages the best ideas and solutions from the private sector while also drawing on Roads and Maritime’s knowledge to ensure better engineering and design, customer outcomes and public value.

Threatened species
Environment
Coastal emu sightings can now be better recorded using the new app
An example of the app being used
Roads and Maritime Services and Pacific Complete have developed a mobile app to better track and record sightings of threatened species along the Pacific Highway upgrade between Woolgoolga and Ballina.
The app will provide staff with the ability to immediately record animal sightings while out in the field, and will help our environment team capture a more accurate estimation of the numbers and types of wildlife along the project corridor.
The app, which uses GIS technology and allows information to be uploaded directly to the Office of Environment and Heritage’s BioNet Atlas, provides users with the tool to accurately record the location of animals within the project area.
All information recorded using this app is fed into the projects’ reporting systems, and better informs our monitoring programs. It helps to ensures accurate, relevant and reliable data can be stored and accessed when required.
