September in a sense is a month of new beginnings.
Summer vacation is finished and students are beginning
or getting settled in school; a tinge of coolness alerts us
to the fact that fall will be beginning soon; and new road
racing events begin to look for an open weekend in the
coming months. This particular September started on a
Saturday and there was a new race to fill it, the Steady
Pace 5k starting in Lyons Park, a new location.
September 2012 3
This 5k Run/Walk, a brainchild of Thaddeus Garrett, was designed specifically to promote awareness
to the effects of childhood and adult obesity in the state of Alabama which ranks among the top five
worst offenders nationally.
Thaddeus is a Mobilian attended Davidson High School and is now a partner at The Advertising
Management Group (The AM Group) in Atlanta, GA. His desire is to provide a positive environment
where participants can receive information for a healthier lifestyle and become informed of the dangers
of obesity. He thought it would be nice to begin such an endeavor in his hometown and then carry the
obesity awareness run/walk events to other large cities in the state. Under the Steady Pace 5k banner
he is looking to partner with local businesses, obtain corporate sponsorships, and receive national
grants to raise money to support local programs in their fight against obesity. Family friendly events will
be designed to promote fun and wellness activities to showcase the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
(L -R) Bill Bowman, 68; Killer
Kowalski, 78; Bill McGough, 65;
and Will Wright, 75, won awards
at the Steady Pace 5k while
supporting anti-obesity programs.

Some 142 participants completed the 5K Run and
many more enjoyed the Fun Run. Some form of
exercise is a good way to begin the first day of the
month, and enjoying food and beverages while
attending the Health and Fitness Fair in the park is a
nice way to reward yourself. Make a note to look for
an improved version next September. Contributed by Will Wright

The next day, Sunday, is a day of rest set aside to worship God and enjoy family. When you awaken to
prepare for another workday, especially a Monday, what is your typical attitude? Are you filled with
enthusiasm and anticipation, looking forward to the opportunities and challenges the day will present?
Or do you experience feelings of frustration or even dread, wishing you could get back into bed, pull up
the covers, and forget about going to work? If you fall on the negative side of this equation, it is
especially nice when the following Monday is Labor Day, a national holiday. Perhaps it is even more
positive when you know there is a new race on this Monday at Amelia Park in Saraland, the Hit the
Mark 5K and Fun Run. Joe and Susie McDonald worked hard to put this race together in a short time
and did a great job. Some 126 runners completed the 5K and many more participated in the Fun
Run/Walk while raising money for the Saraland Archery Club. This too may evolve into an annual
event; again a great way to begin the day with exercise!

When it comes to staying focused, keep in mind, focused people make commitments, not excuses. A
sign on the desk of an officer at the Pentagon read: "The secrecy of my job does not permit me to
know what I'm doing." It's a cute joke, but not so cute when it's true. When you don't know what you're
doing, you become frustrated and end up failing. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
Join the Port City Pacers and get involved.

the finish line in the Hit The
Mark 5K to win the Overall Male
Grand Masters title.

Two races in three days with a true day of rest in
between. While these new opportunities have
passed there will be many more in the months
ahead. Decide now to make a change and begin
an exercise program of some kind; running and
walking are among the best and volumes of
research reports all agree theses types of
activities will improve you life and help you enjoy
life longer. But you must choose to do it and stay
focused on your choice.

This is a great lineup - 29 teams with five or more in each Division.
We agreed to a 15 race format with the best 9 counting toward the end-of-season standings.
The one-time team registration fee of $50.00 is being waived this season.
Team rosters and roster changes should be sent to Marian Loftin and can be updated
throughout the season. Rosters should contain the name, date of birth (mo/day/yr), and sex
(m/f) and may be e-mailed to her at: [email protected] .
Long-term contract workers assigned to a particular organization and immediate family
members will be eligible to run for that organization.
Scoring requirements and number of displacement runners will change a little. All
Divisions will need 3 runners to form a scoring team and will be able to utilize 3
displacement runners. Seeing the results will help you to better understand scoring and the
use of displacement runners.
There is a 2 week limit on team captains submitting results for the Senior Bowl Run and ATR.
Failure to comply will result in scoring all "dummy runners" for your team in those races!

Grand Prix The Grand Prix is the Port City Pacer’s intra-club competition. It is open those whose memberships are
current, meaning dues have been paid. The age divisions follow and women and men have separate
competitions:
Your age division is determined by your age on the day of the first race of the season.
Points are scored inversely to finish. For example, the first open finisher in a Grand Prix race gets 12
points, second gets 11, and so on down to twelfth, who gets 1 point. Points scored in all Grand Prix races
are added to get the Final Grand Prix Standings. Awards are given at our Annual Pacer Cookout after the
Chickasabogue 2 Miler at Chickasabogue Park, the second Tuesday in August. The top 50% of qualifying
runners (rounded up) in each division will receive awards. A runner must score in three Port City Pacer
races to qualify, e.g. If 15 runners in a division score in at least three races during the race season, 8
awards will be awarded for that division.
If you think that your score for a Grand Prix event is incorrect and you would like to contest it, then you
must appeal within 28 days after the results of that event appear on this web site. Otherwise the results are
final.
All Pacer races will be scored for the Grand Prix.
The Azalea Trail Run is a Grand Prix Race and it is also used to settle ties for first place in the Final Grand
Prix Standings. For instance, in 2000/2001 Joey Warner and Ron Goodwin tied for first place in the Male
Open. Since Joey finished ahead of Ron in the ATR, Joey was the winner of the Open Division.
Please note that there is no relationship between the Corporate Cup (which is not conducted by the
Pacers) and the Grand Prix.
If you have any questions about the rules or results, please contact Grand Prix Questions.

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
Water Station Manager
We need volunteers for multiple water stations at each race.
If you will help at a water station for a Pacer-sponsored race, please
complete a volunteer form.
Pros of this job:
1. You are invaluable to a successful, safe race.
2. Aside from the finish line, you are the most welcomed sight on the
course.
3. You get to see and cheer on all race participants.
4. You have the opportunity to get to know the other folks that help
with the water station.
5. You will probably know the winner before anyone else.
6. You get to participate in the post-race festivities.
Cons of this job:
1. You don’t get to see the start or finish of the race (unless you’re
assigned to the start/finish line water station).
Anyone spending any length of time outdoors in our climate can tell you how important a cool drink of
water can be to your comfort, health and safety. Even in cool(er) weather, runners and walkers need
access to water at various locations on the race course.
Responsible for filling and distributing cups of water to participants before, during, and/or after the race.
This job also includes cleaning up used cups and water bottles at the water station.
Water station managers should be at their assigned station twenty to thirty minutes before the race begins.
The course marshal will arrange to pick up water station personnel, equipment, and trash as the race is
finishing. All volunteers are invited to participate in post-race festivities.

September 2012 23
Luise Mitchell claimed another state record at the
Hurricane 5K for age 76 (36:15).
There is a problem, however, as the certification of the
course has not been renewed. An investigative process
is underway to determine if the record can stand.
Luise, you are an inspiration to us all regardless of the
outcome.
