SmartDraw

• Link to SmartDraw is in your lecture notes. Download it and have fun with it. Just practice with it, it’s very user-friendly.

Using diagrams in courtroom

• You may need an expert witness to help you prepare a diagram, and then they can testify from it at trial.

• For example, if you have a personal injury client, you may need a doctor to examine that client so they can testify as to what his injuries were. They can use the skeleton diagram to make a visual record for the jury.

SmartDraw accident diagrams

• Check out the “Accident Reconstruction Step-by-Step Tutorial,” located on the SmartDraw website at http://www.smartdraw.com/tutorials/law-accident/index.htm

Unit 4 Project

  • Timeline Project• You will use SmartDraw to create a

timeline based on a hypothetical situation. Click on the PDF icon to see a couple of examples of what a SmartDraw timeline looks like.

• For your Project, create a timeline based on the following hypothetical:

Page 30: PA335 Unit 4 The Electronic Display of Evidence. PA335 Unit 4 Leftover questions from the past three units?

Unit 4 Project

• Your client, John, is accused of robbing a liquor store. Upon interviewing John, you learn that he could not have possibly robbed the liquor store because he was picking up his daughter from a piano recital. Based on the following facts, create a timeline that shows John’s whereabouts during the time that the crime was committed. His attorney will use this to prove that John could not have possibly committed the crime. Incorporate all of the following evidence into your timeline.

Unit 4 Project

• On January 21, 2007, John went to work at the factory about 9:00 a.m.

• At lunchtime, between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, he went to the deli across the street from the factory and ate his lunch.

• After lunch, John went back to work. John got off work around 5:00 pm.

• John drove across town to pick up his daughter. John stopped at the grocery store on the way around 5:15 PM. John got to his daughter’s piano recital around 6:15 PM. At the piano recital, John spoke with his daughter’s music teacher, Rob, around 6:45 PM after the recital ended.

Unit 4 Project

• The liquor store, which was on the way from John’s work, was robbed at 6:21 PM. It would have been impossible for John to rob the liquor store, since he was picking up his daughter and could not possibly have driven to the liquor store in six minutes.

• To begin creating your timeline, open the software application, SmartDraw. You should have received the software as part of your course materials.

Unit 4 Project

• Review the templates and examples available in SmartDraw and select one to use in creating your timeline. You may be as creative as you would like, but do not alter the facts of the hypothetical.

• If you have not received a SmartDraw disk, use the download in the website link discussed earlier in the seminar (link provided in lecture notes for Unit 4)

• Submit your timeline to the Dropbox by the end of Unit 4.
