  • Description:An insperational religious montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.

    Date: May 31, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Visual CommunicationsEmily Kunz

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn to manage Photoshop layers.Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.Use filters.Apply appropriate typography.

Process: The design needed to incorporate a quote or scripture that would inform the design. Then I looked for images to fit the theme. I then started designing in PhotoShop. I masked the two layers with the paintings, and added a photo of a textured surface in the background and adjusted the hue and levels on it to match the foreground images. I also put a second texture image on the top layer and masked out most of its center tone, and decreased its opacity darkening the overall composition and adding a golden tinge to much of it.I then added the text and gave it texture by alt-clicking between the text and a texture image.

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process: The process of designing this logo involved creating three different logo designs, and then getting feedback from several people as to which one was the most effective. I then refined the main design, and displayed a colored, grayscale, and white-on-dark version of the logo. This design communicates fun, professionalism, and creativity.

  • Description:Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

    Date: May 9, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Visual CommunicationsEmily Kunz

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process: Sketch ideas From the sketches I chose my favorite direction, and blocked it out in InDesign. I printed out the early draft and went through the daft critique process. Then I adjusted the design according to my critique notes. I chose to emphasize the word Leadership in the title to be a focal point, as well as simple way to communicate the main theme of the flier. I focused heavily on alignment to help communicate detail and professionalism. It is mostly black on white for readability, and the font choices and sizes are chosen to make the flier easy to skim.

  • Description:A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

    Date: May 17, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Visual CommunicationsEmily Kunz

    Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft WordScanner

Objectives:Find, scan and import a high-quality image.Create a full-bleed designUse text boxes for layout in Word.Insert and edit images in Word.

Process: I scanned some photos from a visit to the zoo, which led to the zoo fundraising idea. I scanned the image at 300ppi (although maybe I should have gone up to 600ppi since I ended up cropping in pretty tight). I assembled the draft completely in Microsoft Word. I wanted it to look clean but fun. I tried using alignment and a little bit of repetition to unify things.
