BROCHURE:Date: December 5, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: 2 sided folding brochure.

Programs Used: Adobe illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign.

Objectives: Create a new logo and use it in a folding brochure with high quality images.

Process: I brainstormed possible folding ideas and did some research on brochure designs. I decided that I wanted to do a twist on a trifold by adding a top and bottom flap in the center that would fold down like a box. I wanted it to match the concept of the box bike. I had a hard time envisioning this in a flat surface so I began by drawing it out on paper cutting it, folding it and getting an idea of the position and orientation of each page.

Once I had that information I went to InDesign and created guidelines to match my paper prototype. I then took my chosen images into Photoshop and used the crop tools to make them the right size for my brochure. I made some color adjustments to help maintain unity between the images. I took the front image of the bike and using the quick select tool I made a selection and then cleaned it up using the refine edge tool. Once I had a clean selection I moved the image into position in InDesign. Then I used the text wrap tool set on alpha channel to wrap the text around the image.

The next thing I did was go into illustrator and design a logo. I wanted a logo that was simple and clear. I wanted it to easily demonstrate the company and it’s purpose. I used the box element throughout my design to create unity and flow.

Description: A logo for a mountain bike company.

Programs Used: Adobe illustrator

Objectives: Create a variety of logos learning to use the pen tool in illustrator.

Process: The Greek Pantheon has a large dome on top with a circle opening up to the sky. I used that as my inspiration for the circles surrounding the name. I made overlapping circles and used the pathfinder tool in illustrator to get just shape I wanted. I set the text in Futura Heavy BT then I created outlines and used the pen tool to manipulate the letter forms to have the sharp points at the end. I chose the blue and orange to pull the eye upward to the sky. I really like the way the blue circle leads to eye upwards through orange rings of sunlight finally ending on the bold sharp points of the name Pantheon.

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: Letterhead for an esports company.

Programs Used: Adobe illustrator

Objectives: Create a new logo and letterhead for a company.

Process: I started by doing some research about esports so I could really understand what I was trying to design. I really wanted to highlight the classic game look of old school pixels. Creating pixel art in illustrator is not easy, I watched many tutorials and finally discovered and mastered the rectangular grid tool in illustrator. After creating the grid and coloring the pixels I had to find a way to export the image without the grid lines. After expanding the object then selecting all the objects with the same fill and color I was able to use the pathfinder tool and merge it into one object that looks like pixels. After completing the logo I took it into InDesign and created the letterhead.

I created the letterhead by putting the skull on a flag to look like it’s being raised up. I created a text box to include the contact information. Then I aligned it to the left to mirror the logo and the flag on the right side. I made the name with the title font of the logo to make it stand out and I chose a sans-serif for the body copy to make it easy to read. For some added interest I took the skull from the logo and enlarged it to cover the majority of the page. I put it down in the bottom left corner and turned down the opacity to create a nice watermark that connects the design through repetition.

BUSINESS CARD:Date: November 8, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: A business card for an esports company.

Programs Used: Adobe illustrator

Objectives: Create a corresponding business card and letterhead for a company.

Process: To create the business card I created a rectangle 3.5”by 2” and I copied and pasted the contact information from the letterhead to the back of the business card. I chose to add the flag and logo to the back of the business card to maintain consistency between the two. Then I used the skull from the logo on the front of the business card to draw attention and add interest.

MONTAGE: Date: October 24, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: A photo montage that blends two pictures with an inspirational message.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Learn how to blend two images together smoothly using masks and filters.

Process: I made the desert picture my background and then placed the image of the lighthouse on top. Then I created a mask and with a soft brush at 100% opacity I painted out the background of the lighthouse image. Then I took a 30% opacity brush and painted over the lighthouse where it overlapped the desert to show a blend of the two images. I positioned the lighthouse just the left of the first vertical third line so that I could left align my text right on the third line. I chose two contrasting typefaces and then added an hard light adjustment to make the text really pop like it was light.

EVENT AD: Date: October 10, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: A full color, full bleed ad for an event that promotes a fundraiser for a specific benefactor, using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Programs Used: Microsoft Word

Objectives: Scan a high quality image and learn to design using word.

Process: I scanned the image of the scarecrow then worked with alignment to organize the information. I learned some hidden features in word and no know if I had to I could use it, but I hope I don’t have to. I learned some tricks to get the leading just right and had to add some transparent boxes to make the body copy easier to read. I used repetition to tie the boxes together.

PHOTODESIGN: Date: October 16, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: Create a design that from an original photo that uses good color and demonstrates and understanding of photography and basic image editing tools.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Learn to adjust color and use text in Photoshop.

Process: I started by selecting a color scheme and then planning out a way that I could photograph those colors. I needed lots of good outdoor light and a cheerful subject. So I gave a her a cookie then put her in a cute yellow dress and went out to spin and twirl in the bright afternoon sun. After getting the picture I wanted I edited it using tools in Photoshop. I was pleased to find out I had such good light when I went to make edits to the levels they were almost perfect. I cropped the image down to have good composition and made some color adjustments and sharpness edits as well. I used the eye dropper tool to color match the yellow box, text and design elements. It was fun to add a butterfly and flower to the composition as my color swatches. I’m very happy with the way this turned out.

Description: A gray-scale flier promoting a leadership conference for graduating seniors.

Programs Used: Adobe InDesign

Objectives: Apply the principles of design and use appropriate typography.

Process: I started by sketching out some ideas with a pencil and paper. Once I had an idea that fit the profile for my intended audience I began to build up my sketch using Adobe InDesign. Having formulated a plan and organizing my layout I was able to take advantage of the tools and work on the alignment. I used the rulers to create several guides that allowed me to get more creative with alignment and create a nice rhythm through the piece. The image and logo were provided for this project.

WEB PAGE:Date: November 22, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: A web page to showcase a personally created logo.

Programs Used: Sublime Text Editor.

Objectives: Optimize photos and logos for the web. Design a web page using HTML and CSS. Understand hes colors, compressed files and web language.

Process: To create this web page I used Sublime Text Editor to write HTML and CSS code. I love to see how text and numbers can come together to create a website, but I much prefer working in Photoshop where I can immediately see my changes. I began writing the HTML and getting all the text for the site. I used appropriate tags in to create hierarchy and organize the content. I also inserted my logo with HTML code. Then I linked a pre-made CSS file and began to make changes to the look of the website. I started by changing the colors to match my logo. I got the hex codes from the color picker tool in Photoshop. I also changed the font to match my logo. I created a class in CSS to change the color and text of my subcategories

T-SHIRTS:Date: December 10, 2015

Course: Visual Media BYUI Comm 130

Instructor: Emily Kunz

Description: A t-shirt campaign for a bike company.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Learn to create mockups in Photoshop.

Process: Using a logo I created previously I created a t-shirt for the Box Bike company. I used the tools in Illustrator to create shapes of things that a person might carry in their box. I found a mockup and learned to save my files and place them in Photoshop to give an idea of what it would look like on a shirt. I chose to put the design on the back so that the image could be seen while riding the bike.
