DESCRIPTION

There isn't a specific legal requirement to have air-flow indicators or similar fitted toan LEV system. But as an employer you do by law have to make sure your LEVsystems keeps working properly. One of the main reasons why LEV's fail to meetCoSHH standards is because the airflow is not acceptable and therefore control ofthe dust is lost. This could be for a number of reasons: build-up of material, damageto ducting etc.

One simple but effective way of checking this is the use of airflow indicators at thehood, this will provide you reassurance that the flow-rate is maintained, that theprotection for employees is there and that you're not wasting money. There areother ways of checking the airflow, such as using a pitot tube and anemometer.

Visual inspections like using a dust lamp or a smoke tracer(with the work processrunning) can be used to check the dust is being controlled. However, an airflowindicator is currently the only method that will show the operator or supervisorimmediately if there's a problem, and HSE's LEV guidance HSG 258[1]recommends these are fitted.

Downdraught benches provide a solution to the problems of airborne dustarising from hand sanding and finishing operations. Work is conducted

the bench. The bench requires a separately specified suction fan and means of waste filtration.

We supply a range of fan and filter units to operate in conjunction withour downdraught benches, the size of which will depend on the number and sizeof bench to be served. The bench(es) may be connected to an existing extractionplant of suitable capacity. Each bench section is equipped with a low level duct connection port measuring 180mm in diameter and lipped for clip jointing.The table top metal slats can be covered in felt or timber by the end user toprovide product protection and to concentrate suction on the work area.

The latest Health and Safety COSHH Regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) impose more stringent

requirements on LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) systems and higher standards of testing and reporting. We can provide a

complete service in this regard as detailed below.

Plant Service

This is an annual inspection to check all moving elements of the plant, filter condition, ductwork integrity, machine hood

condition, slide damper operation, electrical loads, fluid levels where appropriate, seal and joint condition - taking corrective

action as necessary. Refit all parts and re-seal with mastic, including materials and labour. Recommend remedial work if

appropriate.

Plant Service with COSHH/LEV Report

It is a requirement of the COSHH Regulations for those responsible for any wood dust extraction equipment to make a

written assessment of the risks to health associated with wood dust, together with any action needed to prevent or control

those risks. Regulations state that those responsible must service the equipment and provide a LEV report at least every 14

months.

Our procedure is to take static and dynamic pressure readings on all branches of the ductwork system and interpret these

readings to produce air speed and volume data which is later incorporated into a written report compliant with the COSHH

Regulations.

Dust Test with WEL Report

Hardwood dust and softwood dust have been assigned maximum workplace exposure limits (WEL) of 5 mg/m3 (8-hour time-

weighted average) under the COSHH Regulations. If required by your risk assessment we can undertake this test and produce

a written report.
