Almost every night, there are cool happenings that are dominantly music, at their front stage or inside their space… besides that, they are a great platform for many communities and relatively close to Denpasar.” “The location is vast and comfy, with a strong local vibe! People can watch music performance while exploring literature at their library! They often have music performances that are coupled with interesting discussion topics.” 1. RUMAH SANUR 2. TAMAN BACA KESIMAN “Strategic location, open air, and good food. I love their space of their restaurant… besides that, they have homey style live acoustic music!” 3. RUMAHAN “Personally I prefer open air concept for music concert. And their location is in the center of town. They often have edgy music program.” 4. TWO FAT MONKS “Saving the best for last! This is the headquarter of Spin Sugar, even though space is limited… they have their own unique character, with the type of music that i call smooth, soft and sophisticated!” 5. VOLTVET EATERY & COFFEE 5 SPACE FOR MUSIC LOVERS IN DENPASAR YOU WANT TO CHECK OUT! By : Rudolf Dethu (music lover, band manager, activist) “Every March, during the annual Ngerupuk street parade, sightings of hundreds ogoh-ogoh, the giant, frightening-looking effigies on the shoulders of the city’s youth is a creative-commotion not to be missed. The parade is a stark contrast to the ensuing day of silence, Nyepi. Denpasar surely knows how to party!” “Giant kites have been surfing the heavens of Denpasar for nearly a century. The most common shapes are the fish-shaped bebean, bird-shaped janggan and leaf-shaped pecuk. In July, clamoring blaganjur sounds, dramatic take-offs, and vivid colors swerving over the fields of Padanggalak augment summer-induced happiness in the city. Tug the line and let the soaring kites take your breath away.” 1. OGOH-OGOH FESTIVAL 2. BALI INTERNATIONAL KITE FESTIVAL “Denpasar is a millennial city where tradition embraces progress, modernity gets a makeover and contemporary takes an adventure. Every weekend from March to December, Taman Werdhi Budaya (Art Center) Denpasar is enlivened by various performances that follow a curated-monthly theme, showcasing new-fangled creativity of young and aspiring artists from all over Bali.” 3. BALI MANDARA NAWANATYA FESTIVAL “Literally meaning children of Bali, this festival celebrates traditional Balinese ingenuity, imagination and play. Celebrated in conjunction to National Children’s Day and Independence Day, Rare Bali is the place to be, especially for those who never lose their playful self, and even more so for those who have lost it. Come, let’s play!” 4. RARE BALI FESTIVAL “Every late December, the old downtown Denpasar - an area in and around Gajah Mada street and Puputan Badung Square - boasts one of the largest open-space festival in Bali, during which music, fashion, culinary, crafts and all things contemporary share center stage alongside traditional arts. Denpasar Festival is an enduring testament of the expressive and creative melting pot that makes up the fabric of our society.” 5. DENPASAR FESTIVAL Denpasar: Seasons of Creativity (5 Creative Festivals in Denpasar you need to experience!) By : Marlowe Bandem (DJ, cyclist, cultural observer, researcher at Bali 1928, and many more hats!) “Alun-alun or city square centre of Denpasar in the area of Catur Muka is indeed a popular place where residences do their exercise, relax, take a leisurely walk and spend time with their families. One suggestion from me, is to try to go there in the early hours of the morning, around 2:00 a.m. On Saturday it is very interesting..., the green field is filled with young immigrant settlers, playing guitar, laughing, ... just having a good time. I usually sit around the children's play area. I just sit and do nothing but observe. If there are two of us, I will chat, but if I am alone I am always silent. Occasionally I will enjoy coffee from one of the asongan vendors, or have a bowl of Bakso or meatballs from vendors who are trying to hide from the pursuit of Satpol PP. Sometimes we need to be quiet for a moment to continue to move onto tomorrow, that's the ritual of my silence. Sometimes it is the crowd that teaches true meaning of silence, eyaaaaaaaaaa.” boring at all. Another thing! I love their song playlist that they play there: Radiohead, Tiga Pagi, PayungTeduh, Danilla, and songs from indie musicians. Theres a shelf of books at a corner, and a few vinyl records you can play. This is like home to me… closeness is key!” “There is a warung kopi (coffee road-stall) at Jalan Sanur Beach street right at the Sanur beachside, that is located on the same stretch with other small food vendors, such as locally favorite snacks like tipat cantok, bakso, mie ayam, rujak, tipat kuah, and more! To be exact, those are the snacks we have after we enjoyed jumping into the seaside of Sanur beach! The site is usually dominated by youths from campuses around Denpasar… including people who are in the music scenes of Bali that I know of. Personally, I usually visit this place during sunset in the evening, embraced by JINGGA… The colors of sunset, the fallen leaves at seaside, complete with chatterings of small talk from families who are having a wonderful time at the beach, gossips of the youngsters, come together to create a great mood to neutralise myself after a day full of activities. With a cup of Americano in my hand, I sip and enjoy my coffee while reading poems of my friends… ahhh… Nikmat!” 1. ALUN-ALUN DENPASAR, AT THE BIG FIELD OF I GUSTI NGURAH MADE AGUNG 2. INFINITY COFFEE 3. HARI INI BALI “This is actually not a place to hangout. But I love to go there to hangout as my own ritual. This Warung in located within a house, besides Banjar Grenceng (Jalan Sutomo, Pemecutan Kaja, North Denpasar). There is a small lane, you just go in. There is a big signage, so you would not missed it! Besides the delicious food, and their super Sambel sere lemo recipe handed down from generations, we can also see the structure of how a Balinese house is. There is the Bale Daja, Bale Dauh, Merajan, Gedong and more. Theirs is a really traditonal house, which I totally love, … as it takes me back to the past. Oh, usually they finish selling everything by 1pm, as they are really popular amongst the people working along Jalan Gajah Mada. Jadi kalau kesana agak semengan lah bedik. If you are lucky you get to meet with the house owner and chat about the history of Grenceng area.” At night, if you are looking for a place to go, try going to ‘Hari Ini’, a coffee shop at Jalan Pulau Tarakan no. 17. I like to hang out here while finishing up with works that involve writing, accompanied with black coffee (no sugar, please!) and their mini snowy donuts… my way of spending sometime at night. Don’t worry, if you go there by yourself, the people there are super friendly… you will surely make friends there. Not 4. WARUNG SAMBEL SERE LEMO PAK BOLOT “Sited at Jalan Serma Made Pil No 32, Dauh Puri Klod, west of Denpasar. From morning till evening this is a bird market. Then when night falls, this place becomes a food paradise with its food vendors. Made up of many food and drink vendors, they are really popular amongst campus students, especially those who come from outside of Bali… as the pricing here are relatively manageable. Besides a place for hangout, this is also a favorite place for meetings and discussions for a few communties. Often I am met with critical atmosphere when they are in discussions. Many are relaxed too.. And there is nothing wrong with that. The concept of this place is Misbar, when drizzling, everyone dissolve as the customers sit in the parking lot with the open sky as their roof. Yen hujan, ya bangun, lalu pulang, kalo tidak hujan, nongkrong sampai subuh. If you are lucky, you will be entertained by street magicians and buskers. Make no mistake, their voice is good. My favorite menu is looking at young people gathering, chatting, joking, occasionally arguing. The dynamics of youth are always tempting. Damn I am getting old. Hahahah, and of course my favorite fried squid, raw vegetables, egg, and sweet iced tea. That’s it!” 5.
