Main Street Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Study

2012 Population in Study Area = 5,700

Objectives:• Plan for the future redesign/improvements of the CTA Purple Line Main Street Station.• Strengthen the Metra/CTA customer transfer opportunity. • Enhance the multi-modal connectivity of the Main Street Station area; including bicycle, pedestrian, and bus service to the rail stations• Identify public open space opportunities in the study area to further enhance the desirability and livability of the neighborhood.

Purpose:Identify a unified vision for future transit improvements to make the transit investment an economic development opportunity for the Main Street and Chicago Avenue Business Corridors.

Next Steps – Implementation

RTA, Metra, CTASecure Federal Grants and construct Station Improvements (Red and Purple Line Modernization Project).

City of EvanstonImplement Study recommendations to the surrounding area:

• Implement TOD parking requirements within study area• Implement zoning regulations to encourage retail uses on ground floors within the study area• Install new unified way-finding signage (i.e. location of station entrances, bicycle parking, bus stops)• Increase pedestrian signal timing from five to seven seconds at the intersection of Chicago Ave.

and Main St.• Install curb bump-outs for bus stops in front of the CTA station on Chicago Ave.• Install crosswalks to Chicago Ave. at Washington St. with yield to pedestrian signage• Install east crosswalk to Main St. at Custer Ave. with stop signs• Install 15 to 22 new bike racks near the station entrances.• Install unified streetscape improvements (landscaping, street lighting, banners on light poles)• Construct St. Paul Park improvements in cooperation with CTA & RTA• Construct Sidewalk on east side of Custer Ave. between Main St. and Washington St. in

cooperation with METRA• Construct new landscape plaza between CTA and Metra Stations north of Piccolo Theater
