You can tell were a monk or nun is from by the color of their robe (Japan black, china orange/yellow, Tibetan mountains dark red)

Monks and nuns live in monasteries where they can focus on Buddha

Not all monks and nuns go to a monastery for lifeIn some areas it is a tradition for children to go to the

monastery to learn about Buddha for anywhere from a few weeks to a few years

The word “Zen” means meditation. Most popular religion in Japan. Monks meditate for 3 hours every morning They believe in enlightenment

Meditation is practiced in the Zen religion Samurai, Carpenters, sword makers, and even the

emperor used meditationThe meditated to gain enlightenment ( to become very

wise and pure) and to fully concentrate on their task. Carpenter s, samurai, and sword makers meditate

because they really need fully concentrate on their task. If they mess up they could get hurt.

Zen believed that when died you were recreated over and over again.

They weren’t afraid of death, but they did try to live good lives.

If led good lives then they were recreated into something even better.

Ex: If you were a priest then you could be a samurai, but if you were a thief then you be created into a poor merchant.

They had stone gardens, and they were a teaching to the people.

They teach people to be kind by the ripple affectMeditation affects how people think (they have really

clear minds)

They believe in kamiKami- the god and goddesses of natureThe people who practiced Shinto has cleaning rituals, and

the rituals that they preformed were based on kami. 1. Take the dipper and pour the water into your hand

2. Then pour that water out, and get some more.

3. Put the new water into your mouth, and swish it around.

4. Purify the hand that held the dipper. They use water because it is alive (like the kami)
