BANGALORE, FEBRUARY 22 (TNN): The Indian team, which came in late on Sunday night from Dhaka via Mumbai, chose to cancel a scheduled net session on Monday morn- ing and spent the day cooling down at the hotel instead. Za- heer Khan and fellow left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra visited the National Cricket Academy to make use of the facilities there. India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was in his hometown Ranchi for a day at the National Games being hosted by Jharkhand, joined the team on Monday evening. Sachin Tendulkar, who report- edly underwent a precaution- ary knee scan in Mumbai, did not train on Monday. With a gap of seven days be- tween the opener against Ban- gladesh at Dhaka and their sec- ond game against England in Bangalore on Feb 27, the moot point is whether the team man- agement would have been bet- ter off by allowing the players to break off for a couple of days and rejoin around February 24. This was a point that even former England captain Mike Atherton, now a commentator, raised during one his stints at the mike last Saturday. "With the kind of itinerary the In- dian team has, I would assume the players will be given a mini break whenever possible," Atherton had commented. "How will they keep the team going in such periods, how many net sessions can they have," Atherton had wondered. The itinerary Atherton was referring to includes the IPL that starts barely six days af- ter the World Cup draws to a close, a tour of the West Indies that begins almost immedi- ately after the IPL final as also the longish tour to England, for which the Indian team may have to travel straight from the Caribbean. This being an ICC event, naturally cricket's governing body would have had a say if the team were to break up for a few days but as per an extremely prompt reply from an ICC of- ficial, permission would have been granted had a request been made. "It is permissible if request- ed, obviously subject to it be- ing at a team's cost, security arrangements, etc," the official informed TOI. "And provided it does not result in any failure to meet any event obligations," added the official. The Indian team is sched- uled to be in Bangalore for more than two weeks, what with their third game of the World Cup, against Ireland, slated for Sun- day, March 6 at the same Chin- naswamy Stadium. That means another six days between matches. Perhaps that could be the time for the mini break. The incident took place immediately after Ponting was run out on Monday by a direct hit from the deep by Zimbabwe's Chris Mpofu in the Group A clash between the two teams. An agitated Ponting was seen talking angrily to himself as he walked back to the dressing room and, in a state of fury, threw his gear, which accidentally hit the LCD monitor. Ponting, Gu- jarat Cricket Association (GCA) officials claimed, immediately apologised and requested the authorities for a replacement, said the Australian team's media manager Lachy Paterson. 'Nothing serious about my injury' MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 22 (AGENCIES): Sachin Tendulkar is hale and hearty and will be available for India's next World Cup match. He consulted a doctor just as a precautionary mea- sure and there are no serious fitness concerns. India meet England in a crucial league fixture in Bangalore on Sunday. "Nothing serious at all," Tendulkar told DNA when asked about reports of injury and his subsequent meeting with a doctor. Tendulkar met doctors at Bandra's Li- lavati Hospital where he underwent an MRI scan on the left knee. "It was just a precaution- ary measure," Tendulkar said. Tendulkar stayed back in Mumbai, while his India teammates flew to Bangalore from Dhaka on Sunday. He will join his mates on Tuesday. "I'm going to continue with my normal team schedule," Tendulkar confirmed. He became the most capped ODI player during India's World Cup opener against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday. For the record, he has played 445 ODIs. Team manager Ranjib Biswal has allayed fears of injury to members of the squad. "All 15 players are fit for the next game. Sachin had an old injury. There was a niggle and we wanted to ensure that all is fine. There's nothing to worry about. The (MRI) report is all clear," Biswal said. Meanwhile, the team manager confirmed that Mahendra Singh Dhoni had rejoined the squad on Monday. The ICC Associate Cricketer of Year was never in awe of the opposition bowlers. His best shot was a six over deep mid-wicket off Swann. He just stepped out and lifted the ball with minimum backlift. His third six off Colling- wood was hit in the same region with mini- mum footwork. Doeschate`s third wicket partnership of 78 with Tom Cooper (47, 73 balls, 3x4) and 64 for the fifth wicket with Tom de Grooth (28) off 60 balls helped him take his team to a commanding position. The best ever cricketer to have played for the country, Doeschate, who had earlier hit two half centuries in the previous edition reached his fourth ODI cen- tury – first against a Test playing nation -- due to five overthrows off 98 deliveries. When he was finally caught at mid-wicket boundary off Stuart Broad`s bowling, his team had al- ready reached a score of 274.
