Feasibility Study

• Power Source– Hydraulic

• Advantages– Fluid is incompressible– Can withstand high line pressures– Precise volume control

• Disadvantages– Hydraulic fluid is heavier than air– Leaks pose risk to customer at competition– Reaction time at a given pressure is lower– Hydraulics are more strictly regulated in FSAE– Hydraulic pump requires another power system

Page 5: P11228 Week 4 Japh Learn Joseph Corea Tim Monahan Bryan Reinheimer Ed Gliss.

Feasibility Study

• Power Source– Electronic

• Advantages– Simple storage device– Does not require any fluids– Most energy dense option

• Disadvantages– Heavy– Slow response due to back EMF– FSAE rules on a secondary electronic power source

reduce the systems efficiency and increase complexity

Page 6: P11228 Week 4 Japh Learn Joseph Corea Tim Monahan Bryan Reinheimer Ed Gliss.

Feasibility Study

• Power Source– Pneumatic

• Advantages– Fluid can be vented to atmosphere– Customer familiar with pneumatic systems– Leaks to not pose a health risk or issue for customer during

competition– System lockup easily mitigated

• Disadvantages– Loss of air pressure results in loss of system power– Recharging the system cannot be done by the customer– Space claim is larger than other options

Page 7: P11228 Week 4 Japh Learn Joseph Corea Tim Monahan Bryan Reinheimer Ed Gliss.

Feasibility Study

• Move Clutch Shaft– Cable will be used as mechanical override– Linear actuators are more common for pneumatic

systems

• Sense Position– Linear potentiometers cannot seal well– Rotary potentiometer can handle environment– Pressure sensors require baseline testing

• Manual Override– Both controls will be integrated to system

Page 8: P11228 Week 4 Japh Learn Joseph Corea Tim Monahan Bryan Reinheimer Ed Gliss.

Feasibility Study

• Carry System Signal– CAN Bus will allow our system to interface with

many other systems quickly and effectively

• Process System Signal– Existing ECU does not have functionality we need– Microcontroller will allow design freedom

Feasibility Study

• Easy to Fix/Maintain– A mixture of custom and COTS parts will be

required– When applicable, COTS parts will be used to

lower cost and make repairing easy

• Measure Wheel Slip– Customer currently uses wheel speed sensors

• Utilize these to minimize complexity and cost

System Risks

• Component lead times– Rotary potentiometer (5-7 days)– Pneumatic cylinder (3-6 weeks)

• Cost/budgeting• Packaging constraints• Familiarity with involved systems

– Engine– Control

• System failure• Customer delays• Maintenance time
