Under particular operating conditions, when there ishigh specific flow rate with air pockets, detergents, lowhead, the lubrication of the mechanical seal is improvedby means of an external fluxing pipe(fig. 3).This solution can be accompanied by the use of aspecial seal with a fixed part rotation-locking system(fig. 2).This solution is recommended also in case of verticalaxis pump assembly.

•The non-return valve is integrated inthe head so as to discharge theweight of the column of water andany water hammer onto the headitself, thus safeguarding impellersand diffusers.
•The upper and lower supports aremade of precision-cast stainless steel, ensuring resistance to corrosion, durability and a sturdy coupling tothe motor.
•The GS series pumps can be coupledto either 4OS or F4 motors.

CHECK VALVEThe check valve is built in to the upper support A,manufactured in precision cast stainless steel. The water hammer is deferred through the centre plateB which passes the shock directly on to the upper headthrough the ring C. This action means there is so stressinduced in the impeller and diffuser.
THE PUMP
IMPELLER WITH FACE CLEARANCEThe floating impeller F with face clearance G offers avery high sand resistance to abrasion. The pressure keeps the face clearance ring pressedagainst the stainless steel enclosure H, the impelleralthough can float towards the top letting through theabrasive particles without resistance and thereforewithout causing wear. As you can see the stages do notneed seals.
LOWER SUPPORTThe lower support D is made in precision cast stainlesssteel, to guarantee not only corrosion resistance but alsoa sturdy coupling with the motor. The once shaped suction grid E is desisgned to alloweasy checking of the shaft rotation.
All materials (nitrile rubber, polyurethane, polycarbonate) are FDA approved(Food and Drug Administration)

THE TECHNOLOGY
CONTROL AND REGULATION•The HYDROVAR integrated frequency converter features
automatic regulation of the speed of an asynchronousthree-phase electric motor, by interpreting either apressure or a differential pressure or a delivery signal(Fig. 1 and 2).A patented control system disconnects the pump in caseof a decrease in user demand.
•The pump delivery is detected indirectly through thespeed, enabling the pressure, or the differentialpressure, to be regulated according to the rate ofconsumption, based on the pre-set system characteristicparameters (Fig. 3).
•Besides the autonomous regulation possibilitiesdescribed above, the pump with the HYDROVAR devicecan also be connected to an external system on whichthe regulation parameters must be set.
•The HYDROVAR device is equipped with connectionterminals for remote start and stop, for operating andfailure signals, and for the transmission of an analoguesignal (speed or actual value of the regulation signal) toa central control station. It is also equipped with an RS 485 interface connectionfor communication with a central process controlsystem.
•To prevent access and tampering by unauthorizedpersonnel, the set parameters can be partially or fullyprotected by password. The activation or deactivation ofthe pump and the setting of the required parametersare obtained directly through the command keys, withmessages appearing on the frequency converter’s LCDdisplay.Three differently coloured diode indicator lights signal“ON”, “RUN” and “FAULT” (Fig. 4).Seven different languages can be selected for theinformation appearing on the display.
•In case of coupled systems, the microprocessorcontained in each regulation unit automatically controlsthe pumps’ sequential operation based on systemrequirements. It also controls their cyclic connection inseries and automatic switch in case of malfunction, without requiring any supplementary control devices.
•The frequency converter supplies a sinusoidal evaluationoutput voltage, modulated by impulse length. Itoperates with controlled synthesis of the sinusoidalcurrent and dynamic current limitation. The high 8 kHzimpulse frequency prevents the development ofundesired motor noise. With the harmonic filter anyreactions in the low voltage areas are avoided (incompliance with EN 55011/91, cl.B).The cooling of the frequency converter is ensured by thepump motor fan or, in the wall-mounted version, thefan located in its base.

The minimum operating values that can be reached atthe pump suction end are limited by the onset ofcavitation.Cavitation is the formation of vapour-filled cavitieswithin liquids where the pressure is locally reduced to acritical value, or where the local pressure is equal to, orjust below the vapour pressure of the liquid. The vapour-filled cavities flow with the current andwhen they reach a higher pressure area the vapourcontained in the cavities condenses. The cavities collide, generating pressure waves that are transmitted to thewalls. These, being subjected to stress cycles, graduallybecome deformed and yield due to fatigue. Thisphenomenon, characterized by a metallic noiseproduced by the hammering on the pipe walls, is calledincipient cavitation. The damage caused by cavitation may be magnified byelectrochemical corrosion and a local rise intemperature due to the plastic deformation of thewalls. The materials that offer the highest resistance toheat and corrosion are alloy steels, especially austeniticsteel. The conditions that trigger cavitation may beassessed by calculating the total net suction head, referred to in technical literature with the code NPSH(Net Positive Suction Head). The NPSH represents the total energy (expressed in m.)of the liquid measured at suction under conditions ofincipient cavitation, excluding the vapour pressure(expressed in m.) that the liquid has at the pump inlet. To find the static height hz at which to install themachine under safe conditions, the following formulamust be verified:
hp + hz ≥ (NPSHr + 0.5) + hf + hpv ➀
where:hp is the absolute pressure applied to the free liquid
surface in the suction tank, expressed in m. ofliquid; hp is the quotient between the barometricpressure and the specific weight of the liquid.
hz is the difference in height between the pump axisand the free liquid surface in the suction tank, expressed in m.; hz is negative when the liquidlevel is lower than the pump axis.
hf is the friction loss in the suction line and itsaccessories, such as: fittings, foot valve, gate valve, elbows, etc.
hpv the vapour pressure of the liquid at the operatingtemperature, expressed in m. of liquid. hpv is thequotient between the Pv vapour pressure and theliquid’s specific weight.
0.5 is the safety factor. The maximum possible suction head for installationdepends on the value of the atmospheric pressure (i.e.the elevation above sea level at which the pump isinstalled) and the temperature of the liquid. To help the user, with reference to water temperature
(4°C) and to the elevation above sea level, the followingtables show the drop in hydraulic pressure head inrelation to the elevation above sea level, and thesuction loss in relation to temperature.
To reduce it to a minimum, especially in cases of highsuction head (over 4-5 m.) or within the operatinglimits with high delivery values, we recommend using asuction line having a larger diameter than that of thepump’s suction inlet. It is always a good idea to position thepump as close as possible to the liquid tobe pumped.
Make the following calculation:
Liquid: water at ~ 15 °C γ = 1 Kg/dm3
Delivery required 30 m3/hHead for required delivery: 43 mSuction difference in height: 3,5 mThe selection is an FHE 40-200/75 pump whose NPSHrequired value is, at 30 m3/h, 2,5 m
For water at 15°C the hpv term is Pv = 0,174 m (0.01701 bar)γ
e h = Pa = 10,33mγ
The Hf friction loss in the suction line with foot valves is1.2 m.By substituting the parameters in formula ➀ with thenumeric values above, we have:
THE FRICTION LOSS SHOULD BE MULTIPLIED BY:• 0,8 For stainless steel pipes• 1,25 For slightly rusty steel pipes• 1,7 For encrusted pipes with reduced flow section• 0,7 For aluminium pipes• 1,3 For cement fibre pipes

The starting current (Ia) is three times less than the directstarting current.Starting current Ia = In x 1.3÷2.7Starting torque Ca = Cn x 0.7÷1In the star to delta changeover phase (approx. 70 ms) themotor is not supplied and tends to reduce its rotationspeed. In the case of submersible electric pumps with powerabove 10 HP, the modest mass of the rotor causes aslowdown at changeover, so that the initial Star supplyphase is rendered partially useless. In such cases we recommend using impedance panels oran autotransformer.
• Impedances
The motor is started with a voltage which is lower thanthe rated one, and which is obtained by means ofimpedances. The Lowara panels use impedances which cut down to70% the starting voltage. The switch to the rated voltage takes place without anyinterruption of the power supply.Rated voltage Vn = 380 VStarting voltage Va = Vn x 0.7 = 266 V
