Eleanor Spade Eleanor (Njus) Spade, age 71, formerly of Madison, died at Prairie Homes Assisted Living in Yankton on March 31, 2014. She was born on Au- gust 20, 1942 at Chester, SD to Orlan and Elsie (Jo- hannsen) Njus. She married Walter Spade on Oct 6, 1966 at Madison. She is survived by one daughter — Brenda (Tom) Green of Warner, SD three grandchildren — Travis Sterzinger, David and Tonya Green. One sister — Marilyn Njus of Huron, SD and one brother — Gordon of Papil- lion, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother — Donald and sister — JoAnn Fee. Burial will be at St. Michael’s cemetery in Hart- ington. Military rites will be conducted by the Harting- ton VFW Post #5283, the American Freedom Riders, and the Crofton American Legion Post #128. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visita- tion will continue on Friday morning at church one hour prior to services. Rosella (Sally) J. Bart, daughter of Frank and Anna (Bogner) Bart, was born on October 2, 1919 on the fam- ily farm east of Crofton, NE. She attended elementary school at St. Rose and grad- uated from Crofton High School in 1937. Sally at- tended Omaha School of Commerce and was em- ployed in Omaha, Denver, and Chicago. On January 22, 1943, she joined the WAAC (Women’s Auxiliary Army Corporation), becoming the first woman in Cedar County to join the military. Basic training was in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA, and admin- istration school was in Con- way, AR. On September 1, 1943, the WAAC was re- named the Women’s Army Corp. From April 9, 1944 to October 20, 1945, Sally served her country in E.T.O. (European Theatre of Oper- ations) in England and France during WWII. It was during that period while working in the mailroom that she realized her brother, Raymond Bart was killed in action. On Novem- ber 6, 1945, she was dis- charged at Ft. Sheridan, IL, having completed her tour of duty. After returning to civilian life, Sally was employed at BF Goodrich in Chicago, as well as other places until 1950 when she returned to Nebraska. She worked at the Ford Garage in Hartington as a bookkeeper for four years. During this time she also cared for her sister, Katie’s children while Katie was in the hospital in Kearney, NE for nine months. She was em- ployed at Farmers’ Home Ad- ministration from December 1955 until her retirement in 1981. After retirement, she worked for Gayle Hochstein Sand and Gravel as a book- keeper. Sally supported two children from the Dominican Republic through Christian Charities from baby to 16 years of age. Sally was an active mem- ber of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, held a Per- petual Adoration Hour from January 1981 to 2013, CD of A, Holy Trinity Guild, life member of the Hartington VFW Post #5283 and life member of the Crofton American Legion Post 128. Sally served nine years on the Hartington Ambulance, she was a CCD Coordinator, and she served on the Com- munity Caretakers and the Hartington Community Foun- dation. Sally also did volun- teer work at the Hartington Nursing Center. In 1994, she was presented the Harting- ton Outstanding Citizen Award. She was a world trav- eler; she loved bowling and golf, and watching her neigh- bor kids grow up. Sally lived life to the fullest. Sally is survived by four- teen nieces and nephews, Ann Marie Kuehler, Nancy Schieffer, Kathy Wicht, Pat Huss, Toni King, Steve Keiser, Jean Rieff, Heidi Haberman, Rose Ann Sundin, Sharlene Guenther, Roman Bart, Don Keiser, Edward Bart, and Mary Ann Promes. Mildred “Millie” Wootton was born January 24, 1916 on the farm in rural Crofton, Ne- braska to Hubert and Mary (Bogner) Sprakel. She grew up in rural Crofton and at- tended Beaver Creek Grade School. She moved to West Point, Nebraska and then to Omaha, Nebraska before set- tling in Seattle, Washington where she met Charles Woot- ton. Millie married Charles on February 12, 1941 in Seat- tle. They moved to Yankton, South Dakota in 1944, where Millie raised her family and helped Charles at the Contractors and Builders Lumberyard, which they owned and operated until 1998. Millie be- came a resident of Avera Sis- ter James Care Center in 2006. Millie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, where she was very active on the Altar Society, Funeral Com- mittee, Bazaar Committee, Soup Kitchens, Catholic Daughters and the Madonna Circle. She was also very ac- tive in the Yankton Girl Scouts and became known as the “Equipment Lady” be- cause she would always take care of the canoes, tents and other various camping equip- ment. Millie served with the Minn-la-Kota Girl Scout coun- cil for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society in Yankton. In 1994, she was awarded the Citizen of the Year in Yankton for her devotion to her com- munity. Even with all of her charitable and volunteer ac- tivities she still found time for her flowers, in particular her geraniums. It was not un- usual to see various gerani- ums blooming in the front windows of the Contactors and Builders Lumberyard or in the basement windows of her home in the winter. She could often be found outside tending to her flowers from the first sign of Spring until the first hard frost of Winter. Millie had an unwavering faith in God and was always there for her family. Survivors include her six children: Richard and Rosie Wootton of Yankton, South Dakota; Julie and Larry Wach- holtz of Pierce, Nebraska; Bernita and Pat Whalen of Benicia, California; Bert Wootton of Pinole, California; Ron Wootton of Omaha, Ne- braska; and Nadine Ritsch of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Magdalen Sprakel and Julie Sprakel both of Crofton, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jayne was born May 20, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Melvin and Donna (Leake) Furby. A year after she was born, the family moved to Al- bion, Nebraska where they farmed and raised Quarter Horses, Polled Hereford Cat- tle, Hampshire Hogs and chickens. Jayne attended Boone School District #4 and then graduated from Albion High School. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Al- bion before moving to Kohles Acres in rural, Crofton, Ne- braska. On April 24, 1987, Jayne married Harold “Ole” Olson. After their marriage, they lived in Yankton and Jayne worked at Knutson Western Store, then Ability Building Services and finally at the Human Services Cen- ter, retiring in the late 1990s. Harold and Jayne enjoyed riding motorcycles and be- longed to a motorcycle club. She also enjoyed sewing but above all, she loved the Lord and was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Jayne was a loving person who will be deeply missed. Jayne is survived by her husband, Harold “Ole” Olson of Yankton; son, A.J. She has ASD (atrial septal defect), which is a hole in her heart. This will require open-heart surgery on June 11 in Min- neapolis. Paige lives in Min- netonka, Minn., and is the granddaughter of Debbi High- land of Yankton. At the Moose Lodge, there will be food and a gathering of friends. Citywide Curbside Cleanup Planned For Next Week This is a reminder that the annual Yankton Citywide Cleanup is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 5. Residents on city garbage collection routes may dispose of materials at no additional charge. Materials may be dropped off at the Solid Waste Transfer Station located at 23rd and Kellen Gross Drive from April 5- 12 on the hours posted below.
