YUGUMBIR STATE SCHOOL PARENTS AND CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION

NEWSLETTER –16th May, 2017 Available online: www.yugumbirss.eq.edu.au

P. & C. Meeting: Every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm.

School Office Hours: 8am to 4pm

**** Free Dress Day *****

Wednesday 17th May, 2017

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members, Parking/Traffic – can we do better? Parking around our school has featured in the local newspaper in the past week. The concern referenced in the newspaper article was based on the number of traffic offences issued this year. The total of 26 was the highest in the area, along with another school. This article was poorly written as it does not provide background information such as size of school or direct sources. However, it must always be recognised that traffic, parking and collection processes around our school could be improved. Your attention is directed to the following: Drop Off and Collection Zone This area is for delivery and collection of students. Often these zones are called “2 minute zones” as this is the amount of time a vehicle is allowed to park in the defined space. It also implies that the driver must not leave the vehicle. This zone is usually busiest between 3pm and 3:15pm daily. Front Gate There is a staff member on duty here daily. Their main role is to support the pedestrian crossing manned by a Traffic Supervisor and to ensure students are ready to board their bus when it arrives, until approximately 3:30pm. The street directly across from the front gate is Thistle Street. Parents should note that there are “no parking” signs along both sides of the street. Rainforest Carpark Notes were issued to parents, via students, one afternoon last week. Essentially, the practice of vehicles queueing along the main thoroughfare and collecting students as they walk from the zebra crossing or between cars, is one of our most unsafe practices. No student should be entering a vehicle in this carpark, unless the vehicle is stationary and parked within a designated parking bay – with students able to walk to the car door from the footpath (boundary footpath of central footpath). Redgum Drive Through Council Park One of the most concerning issues in this area is the need for students to have to cross the road when delivered/collected, if their parent’s car is located on the other side of the road. Walking between cars to cross the road is dangerous due to limited vision by the student and by the driver of any oncoming vehicle. Parents parking in other areas, including along Vansittart Rd simply have to observe the road rules. The school cannot control driver behaviour. Essentially we are relying on our community to observe the rules of the road – the laws relating to safe driver behaviour. Let’s work together to improve the safety around our school – for our students’ benefit. It’s everyone’s responsibility. Free Dress Day / Chaplaincy Tomorrow, Wednesday 17th May, is a free dress day. Students who come to school in free dress are required to donate a gold coin. The collected funds will go towards supporting our chaplaincy program. Due to the support of the Logan West Chaplaincy Cluster, our P&C and school funding, we are now able to extend the chaplaincy program to five days each week. This is a very positive step, improving the capability of the school to further support students and families in need of support. The support of the P&C and the Logan Chaplaincy Cluster and the sponsorship they have sourced, is highly appreciated.

Roofing Project Our school is in urgent need of an upgrade to several of the roofs to our teaching blocks and the guttering in several places. This actual roofing work is beyond the funding capability of the school. We are pleased to advise that the department’s Facilities section has arranged for Teaching 2 and 3 and possibly Teaching 4, 5 and Library to be undertaken through a state maintenance project, during the forthcoming holidays. Report Cards / Parent-Teacher Interviews At the end of Semester 1, every student will receive a report card, outlining his/her achievement standard in every subject, for the first semester. These reports will be issued to students on Tuesday 20th June. Parent-teacher interviews will also be offered to parents, to meet their child’s teacher to discuss student performance and to build joint strategies to further support student development and achievement. These interviews will be held after the June/July holidays. An online process will be published before the end of the term, enabling parents to book interview times. This process proved very successful last year, especially for those parents who have a number of parent-teacher interviews to book and attend. Disco – Friday 26th May

The P&C is conducting a Disco for students on Friday 26th May. All Yugumbir students are invited to attend this event. With its “Country & Western” theme, it promises to be a night of great fun and enjoyment for our students. There are two sessions, to cater for the different ages of students.

- Prep to Year 2 students – 5:30pm to 7pm

- Years 3 to 6 – 7:30pm to 9pm

Entry at the door costs $5; pre-purchased wristbands are available from the office for $4.

Parents and students are asked to note the follow: - The disco is for Yugumbir SS students only

- Students must be delivered to the door at the beginning of the disco and signed in.

- Prep students must have a designated adult in attendance

- Students must be collected by an adult from within the hall, after the disco.

- Students will not be permitted to leave the hall during the disco.

- All other areas of the school are out-of-bounds for YSS students and for anyone else.

- Absolutely no stilettos or heels are to be worn inside the hall.

A safe and very enjoyable night is anticipated for all students. Refer to the flier later in this newsletter for detailed information including the prepay process and how to order pizza. Safety Online Students are increasingly accessing information online. This includes not only content from a range of possible sites but also engaging in online chat/social media platforms. The most significant strategy to ensure appropriate use of online material and sites is for parents to be fully aware and knowledgeable of how their children are using their computer and being vigilant about this. The eSmart Committee will be issuing a pamphlet (produced by the Child Safety Commission) to each Year 4 to 6 child this week, to take home and show their parents re safe access and appropriate use of computers and online sites. It will be ideal as a discussion starter between parents and children. SCIM CAMP This week sees the annual Southern Cluster Instrumental Music Camp (SCIM camp) being conducted at Park Ridge State High School from Wednesday 17 May to Friday 19 May. This year we have 34 of our Senior band students (Year 6 students) attending, what will be an exciting venture for them in their ongoing musical learning journey. The students will team with fellow students from the Primary Schools within our cluster, as well as working with senior students from both Park Ridge and Browns Plains Highs. The students will also have the opportunity to work with the senior Music conductors from Park Ridge State High School. The students will be exposed to music that will extend and challenge them prior to performing as a combined big band at a finale concert on Friday evening commencing at 5.30p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Maths Extension Group

Last Wednesday, the Year 6 Maths Extension students worked at Browns Plains State High School with the extension Year 7 students. During the lesson, they were exposed to a range of vocabulary including supplementary angles, complementary angles, and co-interior angles. They were also required to find the missing angles from a range of shapes. The students were solving problems aimed at Year 9 students! The Maths Extension students are working extremely hard, and we are very proud of them. Miss Cornwall & Mr Holt Can you work out the following problem?: What is the value of x and w?

RULE OF THE WEEK Be respectful/Be responsible: Follow expectations at eating time.

The focus for this fortnight’s rule is to improve the standard of behaviour at eating time. Eating time is a

social time for students to eat, chat with friends from other classes and relax after 2 hours of learning.

Some students take this relaxed approach a little too far and have formed a habit of ignoring

instructions, speaking disrespectfully, choosing behaviour that is irresponsible and sometimes unsafe.

Some of the expectations being taught this fortnight include; speaking respectfully, eating using

manners, disposing of rubbish correctly, and following the instructions of the adult on duty. This means

listening when the adult calls for attention and only leaving to play when dismissed. It is vital to learn

these skills in the younger years, in order to lay the foundations for appropriate social behaviour in

adulthood.
