COAGULATION: Combining of small particles to form larger, heavier particles.
SEDIMENTATION: Sinking and settling of particles downward.
FILTRATION: Passing of water through materials which remove the smallest particles.

DISTRIBUTION: Directing treated water through systems of pipes to city water utilities from which it is sold and delivered to consumers.
17DRINKING WATER TREATMENTPROCESS Definitions
EVAPORATION: The process that changes liquid into a VAPOR. Sunlight on oceans, lakes, and streams heats the water. Water molecules, as steam or vapor, are released into the air.
Water molecules are made up of 2 Hydrogen atoms + 1 Oxygen atom = “H2O”
CONDENSATION: The process that changes water vapor into liquid. Air carries moisture as water vapor. When air cools, water molecules combine to form droplets. Clouds are made up of very tiny water droplets.
RESPIRATION: Breathing process in which oxygen (O) is inhaled and carbon (C) dioxide (O2) or “CO2” and water vapor are exhaled.
PRECIPITATION: The condensation of water vapor into larger, heavier droplets. As air temperature cools to the point that the air can no longer hold the droplets, they are released from clouds in the form of rain, hail, sleet, or snow.
COLLECTION: Precipitation falls on oceans, lakes, streams, or on land, where it either soaks in to refill ground water or flows over the surface back into streams, lakes, or the ocean.
TRANSPIRATION: Evaporation of water carried upward from plant roots to pores on the undersides of leaves where it is changed to vapor and released to the air.
