NEWS LETTER Page No. 1 This issue SAEINDIA National Events P. 1 Southern Section P. 5 Bangalore Section P.14 Western Section P.16 The 5 th edition of SUPRA SAEINDIA, India’s biggest formula student competition was kicked off with the oath ceremony at the Formula 1 track at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida on July 4, 2016. The oath for the student formula competition was administered by Mr. Balraj Bhanot, Chairman, Transport Engineering Division Council (TEDC) of BIS Along with Mr. P K Banerjee, Convener SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016. SUPRA is being Organized annually by SAEINDIA, the event provides a platform for students to apply their engineering skills to design and construct a Formula category vehicle as per defined performance and safety specifications. SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 comprises series of static and dynamic events spread over five days, concluding with a final endurance test and a valedictory function on 9 th July 2016. The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 events consist a total of 1000 points distributed evenly in the different static and dynamic events. Mr.Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian Formula 1 driver, visited SUPRA 2016 on July 8, the penultimate day of the event, to interact with the student community and encourage them and tell them the real aspects of motorsports. 16 2016 NEWS LETTER ISSUE This year, the event saw record participation from 3,500 engineering students from 125 teams. Maruti Suzuki India was the title sponsor of Supra India 2016 for the consecutive fifth year, which also saw sponsorships from Total, BPCL, Castrol, Shell, AVL, Siemens, Altair, Ansys, MRF, CEAT, GKN, Horiba, Dassault Systems, Hindustan University, Tripti Hospitality, Eleation, Continental and Viper Hobbies. SAEINDIA, the Indian chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers has been organizing the event for its fifth consecutive year, which sees students from engineering colleges across the country battle it out against each other in their quest to apply their technical knowledge on the ground by conceptualizing and developing a formula racing car. Guarded by a standard rule book, the Formula Supra requires teams to build a single-seat race vehicle, using an engine having a maximum capacity of 600cc. ceremony was organised on 27th of August 2016 at Rajagiri
College of Engineering & Technology, Cochin. Two technical
talks on the latest advancements in automotive field were
also made by eminent speakers. Mr. Benkim B A, Treasurer,
SAEISS - Cochin Division, welcomed the gathering and
introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar, the speaker to the participants
and handed over the session to him for the lecture on
“Automotive Sensors and their Applications”.
Dr. E. Rajasekar, Secretary - SAEISS made a very good
introductory speech on SAE’s mission and vision. He took a
very promising lecture on the activities of SAEISS. After a
small break Dr. E. Rajasekar gave an interesting lecture on
Automotive Sensors and their Applications; the lecture was
very useful to the members since it was included with many
modern technological sensors and their working. Mr. Francis
Augustine Joseph thanked the speaker for his lecture and Dr.
Manoj Tharyan, Faculty advisor, SAE Collegiate club of RSET,
presented him with a memento, as a token of gratitude.
The dignitaries occupied the dais for the inaugural session.
Dr. Thankachan T. P, HOD, Mechanical department, RSET,
welcomed all the dignitaries and the participants to the
inauguration of Cochin Division. All the dignitaries
inaugurated the Cochin Division by lighting the lamps. Mr. S.
Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS gave the inaugural address. Dr. E.
Rajasekar introduced all the MC members of Cochin Division
to the participants. Dr. E. Rajasekar, Secretary SAEISS wished
them for their future activities and the growth of Cochin
Division.
COCHIN DIVISION LECTURE MEETING:
Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS & Dr. E. Rajasekar,
Secretary SAEISS thanked Rajagiri College of
Engineering & Technology, Cochin for hosting
inauguration of Cochin Division and presented the
memento to Dr. Thankachan T. Pullan, Professor &
Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Mr. Francis Augustine Joseph, Chairman SAEISS -
Cochin division briefed about the plan of action and
future endeavours of SAEISS - Cochin Division to all.
He introduced Mr. S. Krishnan, Vice President, Engine
R& D, Ashok Leyland to the participants. Mr. S.
Krishnan delivered an invited lecture on “Automotive
Engines and Modern Perspective through
Technology”.
Mr. Vipin, Division MC Member, thanked the speaker
for his lecture and Mrs. Nimmu Mary, Division MC
Member, presented him the memento as a token of
gratitude.
Mr. Arun Kappan, Secretary SAEISS - Cochin division
concluded the function with the vote of thanks and
thanked all the dignitaries and participants for
participating and making the event a grand success.

The day 1 Program began with the welcome address
from Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. They
gave a warm welcome to all the participants & the
Resource person, MC Member and Champion
present at the venue. Head of the Department
welcomed the Resource person and MC Member
SAEISS.
Mr. R. Armstromg, MC Member - SAEISS & Mr. S.
Shanmugam Director, DDIPL addressed Host College
and gave brief Introduction about SAE Trek.
SAEINDIA Southern Section appreciated the
Knowledge Institute of Technology for hosting the
prestigious Trek program in their college premises.
Mr. S. Shanmugam presented the memento to the
host college.
After the Inauguration Engineering Design process
was started by Mr. S. Shanmugam. He explained the
various design fundamentals to the participants.
Participants were divided into 7 teams. He explained
the objectives & purpose of the challenge, what are
the requirements & expectation from each teams.
Teams planed & designed the toy, using all the
fundamentals of Science then testing of their design
in front of the Resource person and Students making
note of various parameters to compare the results.
On Day 2 all participants along with volunteers went
for trekking to Yercaud Hills. Mr. S. Shanmugam, Mr.
R. Armstrong and Dr. E. Rajasekar distributed to the
certificate to the participants after the Trek.
KRT & SAE TREK:
We are glad to inform you that SAEINDIA Southern Section
conducted KRT TREK hosted by Knowledge Institute of
Technology at Yarcaud Hills, Salem District on 27th & 28th
August 2016. Members of SAEINDIA Southern Section of
various organizations participated in the event and made the
program a grand success.
Dr. M. Sathyanathan, HOD, Knowledge Institute of
Technology welcomed the dignitaries and the participants
and others for the SAE KRT Trek program. Dr. M. Thangavelu,
Placement Trainer KIOT presented the memento for Mr. S.
Shanmugam, Managing Director, DDIPL and Dr. M.
Sathyanathan HOD presented the memento for Mr. R.
Armstrong, MC member SAEISS.
Mr. S. Shanmugam, Managing Director, DDIPL thanked
Knowledge Institute of Technology for hosting the SAE KRT
Trek program in their organization and presented the
memento to the Dr. M. Thangavelu, Placement Trainer,
KIOT. Mr. S. Shanmugam & Mr. R. Armstrong, MC member -
SAEISS, conducted the Engineering Design Process for KRT
trek participants. Every participants of trek enjoyed and learnt
the engineering concepts by building a jet toy. In the process
of designing a jet toy, they build a toy, tested its performance,
measured its accuracy and speed it can travel with different
nozzles and different weight loads.
On 28th August 2016 all the participants started to Trek at
6.00 A.M. from the hosting college and reached the Yercaud
Hills, Salem District at 8.00 A.M after having the breakfast
between the natures and started the SAE KRT Trek. Dr. E.
Rajasekar, Secretary -SAEISS joined the SAE KRT Trek.

SKIP - AUTOMOTIVE TRANSMISSION:
SKIP program on topic of “Off Highway and Special Types of
Vehicles” was organised by SAEINDIA Southern Section on
10th & 11th September 2016 at SAEISS, Guindy, Chennai.
The program started with the inauguration of SKIP Program.
Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer – SAEISS delivered welcome
address. He introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar to the participants.
Dr. E. Rajasekar started the program with a brief Introduction
about Off Highway and Special Types of Vehicles. He
explained about requirements of Off Highway Vehicles with
slides & Video. He explained the working of various vehicles
video demonstrations, the participants are able to visualize
the vehicles performance and their working.
He also explained the working mechanism of Dump trucks,
Excavators, Bull dozers, Military tanks, Loaders, Wheeled and
Crawler Tractors, Tree cutters, Scrappers and Bush cutters to
the participants. Then he also explained the technical features
of each vehicle.
During the valedictory session Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman -
SAEISS being a part of Tractor manufacturer, he explained the
participants about his vast experience and the technical
features of the Tractors. Then all the participants shared their
feedback to Dr. E. Rajasekar and Mr.S.Sriraman.
Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman - SAEISS distributed the certificates
to the participants and also felicitated the speaker with the
memento as a token of appreciation for conducting such a
value added program to the student community and making
the event a grand success.
LECTURE MEETING – MOBILITY AUTOMOTIVE
USER EXPERIENCE & EXPECTATIONS :
Lecture Meeting on ‘‘Mobility - Automotive User
Experience and Expectations” was organized by
SAEINDIA Southern Section Mahindra World City
Division on 17th September 2016, Saturday at
Madras Management Association, Chennai. Mr. R.
Balasubramanian, Secretary SAEISS MWC Division
welcomed the speaker and the participants to the
lecture meeting. He invited the speaker for his
auspicious lecture meeting.
Mr. K. N. Balaji started his lecture on the topic
“Mobility - Automotive user experience and
expectation” which will be the key factor in
automobile user expectation from industry. The
speaker vowed the participants with his exemplary
talks about the automotive user experience and
expectation which can be implemented as the user
expects the safety and efficiency of vehicles. His
presentation is totally different from others because
he used cartoon pictures and templates to explain
technical terms. He made the lecture a grand success
by visualizing stunning images and videos to garner
the participant’s attention.
Mr. R. Balasubramanian, Secretary, SAEISS MWC
Division invited Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS
and Mr. C. Pradeep, SAEISS MWC Divisional
Chairman to present the memento to the speaker.
Mr. Baskarasethupathy, SAEISS MWC Division
treasurer thanked the speaker for his enlightening
speech and also thanked participants.

CHAMPION LEADERSHIP TRAINING PHASE 3:
SAEISS organized the Champion Leadership Training Phase 3
on 17th & 18th September 2016 at SAEINDIA Southern Section
office, Guindy. Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer - SAEISS
welcomed all the participants and introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar,
the speaker.
Dr. E. Rajasekar, gave an overview about SAE International,
SAEINDIA and SAEISS. He then explained the need of society
and the expectations from champions and briefed about
ongoing SAEISS activities and future activities to all the
Champions. Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS gave his views
about Leadership skill to be developed by the champions. He
discussed about the need for the champions and their
dedication to execute the activities. Mr. C. Pradeep,
Chairman, SAEISS MWC Division, handled the Project
management session and two case studies were made and
the Project management session was handled more
interactively and discussions on real life current scenario were
made.
Mr. M.P. Prasad, Champion – Team Building made the
champions to realize their struggles and supported them in
making the champions think and act better. Mr. T Kasiraja
briefed about the do`s and don’ts during the program/event
execution and shared the best practices and his experiences
to new champions. Mr.S. Shanmugam, Mentor - SAEISS
clarified the Champions about the Structure of SAEISS,
Governing Council and Managing Committee. He pointed out
the necessity to prepare the budget and calendar for the
activities. Mr. C. Sundaravadivelu, TQM Expert made the
champions to understand the concept of SOP. And how the
SOP must be formulated for the events. They together gave
the certificates to the participants.
INNOVISTA 2016:
SAEISS Madurai Division organized a state level engineering college student project competition “INNOVISTA 2016” on 17th September 2016 at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul in association with TAFE, Madurai. During the inauguration Mr. V. Srinivasan, Sr. Associate VP, TAFE, Mr. Sivakumar, GM - Materials, TAFE, Ms. Chhaya Balasubramanian, HR Manager, TAFE and other dignitaries from colleges took the seats on Dais. Mr. V. Srinivasan inaugurated INNOVISTA 2016 by lighting the Kuthuvillaku with the other dignitaries and he delivered the inaugural speech. Dr.M.Uthayakumar, Treasurer, SAEISS, Madurai division delivered welcome address. The Presidential address was delivered by Dr.N.Mahendran, Principal-in-charge, PSNACET. Dr.D.Vasudevan, HOD/Mech.Engg., PSNACET and Mr.Sivakumar, TAFE felicitated the gathering. Dr.Kannan Rajendran, Secretary, SAEISS, Madurai division delivered vote of thanks. An exclusive live demonstration of tractors have been performed by Mr.Arul Anandakuamar and Mr.Arsad of TAFE. Totally 160 abstracts have been received out of which 36 projects have been selected for final display. The first three teams have been awarded with a memento and cash prize. Apart from that five teams have been given with consolation prize. In the concluding session, Mr.V.Srinivasan invited the selected teams to TAFE for a special presentation session and he encouraged them to take the projects to the next level. All the participants have been issued with participation certificates. The entire arrangements were taken care by a team of student & faculty volunteers from PSNA College of Engg. & tech., Dindigul.

He is also a Senior Member at Hughes Hall and has
over 35 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of
CAE, low-emission energy conversion, low carbon
vehicles, alternative fuels and chemical processes.

SAE TREK:
Pad-Marg - SAEIWS Trek a one day program is a blend of
adventure and learning. This trek is an initiative of SAEINDIA
Western Section, for its members. Second trek in this
initiative is scheduled on Saturday 20th August 2016 from
Vetal Hill to Chaturshrungi Hill and return.
This program was at scenic trekking locations which will
provide great sense of adventure and bonding with nature
and providing some instructional learning. In our second
edition of program, participants collected plastic waste,
bottles on the hill and sent it for recycling. Participants also
went under test on General Automotive Engineering.
All participants gathered at Vetal hill Hanuman Temple, from
where all participants started trekking towards
Chaturshrungi Hill and then return back.
Vetal Hill is a prominent hill in the city limits of Pune, India.
The hill is the highest point within the city limits. There is a
temple of Vetala located on the top of the hill from which
the hill derives its name.
Participants also gave a test on General Automotive
Engineering. The winners of this test were Mr. Thomas
Cherian & Mr. Tarun Ranjan. Both of them were awarded
with a gift in the form of books by the hands of Mr. Narahari
P. Wagh, Secretarty, SAEINDIA Western Section.
Lunch for all participants was organized in ARAI.
LECTURE MEETING - EMISSION
REGULATION FOR I. C. ENGINE IN INDIA:
Lecture at Collegiate Club: Mr. Ramesh delivered a lecture on “Emission regulation for I. C. Engine in India” at N. K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology, Solapur for its collegiate club members.
AWIM MASTER TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM:
AWIM (A World In Motion) Master Teachers &
Volunteers Training Program” was conducted
successfully 27th Aug 2016 at Valentine Circle School,
Solapur. There were around 30 participants including
Student Volunteers and Teachers for this training.
The Jet toy and Skimmer training was conducted in
one day. The master trainer for this activity was Mr.
Sagar Murugkar of SAEIWS.
Teams were asked to build difference Jet toys and
new sail patterns for Skimmer other than
conventional designs. Each team tested their Jet-toy
and Skimmer based on specified parameters.
Teachers & Volunteers would train the students in
respective schools in coming months for the AWIM
Regional Olympics in December 2016.

LECTURE MEETING - PEGASOR’S TECHNOLOGY
OVERVIEW:
On 31st August 2016 SAEIWS conducted a lecture on
“Importance Of Measuring Particulate Emission Pm & Pn
From Engines – Pegasor’s Technology Overview” by Mr.
Markku Rajala, Head of Technology, Pegasor OY Finland at
SAEIWS and more than 60 participants attended the
program.
