COLOR CODED:

Red= Acetylene (Flammable)

Green = Oxygen

Oxygen

Oxygen-

a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is heavier than air. Oxygen alone will not burn, but when mixed with other combustibles it becomes highly explosive.

Page 6: Oxy – Fuel Torch

• Oxygen is stored as a compressed gas in a steel cylinder to a pressure of 1,800 to 2,200p.s.i.

• Turn Cylinder valve open completely

Page 7: Oxy – Fuel Torch

• Right Handed Threads• Regulator has Female

Connection, Cylinder has Male Connection

• Working pressure between 20 and 60 psi

• We (Ag mech) will use 20 psi

Oxygen Regulator

Page 8: Oxy – Fuel Torch

Acetylene

• Acetylene-is colorless, but has a very distinct odor. This gas is compressed to a pressure of 250 p.s.i. It is composed of carbon and hydrogen.

• Turn Cylinder Valve 1/3 or 1/4 turn open.

Page 9: Oxy – Fuel Torch

• Left Handed Threads• Regulator has Male Connection

with “V” groove, Cylinder has female Connection.

• Acetone is added as a Catalyst.• Working pressure between 2

and 10 psi• Tank pressure, 250 psi• We use 5 psi

Acetylene Regulator

Oxygen & Acetylene Cutting• Is a process used to separate metal by heating it

to a melting point, somewhere between 1,400 and 1,800 degrees

• The metal is then oxidized and blown from the kerf with a stream of pure oxygen

Oxygen Acetylene Safety

1. Oxygen supports combustion2. Cylinders are necessary but can also be

highly dangerous3. Always cap bottles in transport4. Cylinders can explode

Page 12: Oxy – Fuel Torch

5. Acetylene bottle should be emptied at a rate of 1/7th capacity per hour or less

6. Flames can reach 6,300 degrees F7. Bottles should be stored in a vertical

position at all times.

Cutting Tips

• Tips are sized by metal thickness• Adjust pressure to fit metal• Cone of flame does not touch metal• Popping tip means:

too close, not enough oxygen, too hot, or dirty tip

ThreeTypes

OfFlames

Page 15: Oxy – Fuel Torch

Carburizing Flame

• Excess acetylene• Lack of oxygen• Used for soldering

& hardsurfacing

Page 16: Oxy – Fuel Torch

Neutral Flame

• Correct oxygen• Correct acetylene• Used for cutting,

welding & heating

Page 17: Oxy – Fuel Torch

Oxidizing Flame

• Excess oxygen• Lack of acetylene• Used for brazing• Usually has a

whistling sound
