Oxford is one of the world’s great cities. Its rich culture, builton education, art, music and literature, makes it a wonderfuldestination for visitors.

The character and appeal of Oxford are formed by one otherimportant aspect of its culture – fabulous restaurants. Fromthe relaxed café scene in Jericho, to cosmopolitan dining inEast Oxford, the city now boasts an outstanding restaurantsector that serves all tastes and budgets. And whilst there isno shortage of sophisticated dining destinations in thebustling city-centre, you could escape the city boundariesand visit a gastro-pub in an idyllic rural location.

Oxford also offers much for those whose interest in food anddrink extends beyond restaurant dining. Through OxfordGastronomica, a specialist centre for the study of food, drinkand culture, you can achieve culinary enlightenment byattending public events, following educational programmesand interacting with leading food writers, broadcasters andchefs.

So make the most of this amazing city and let its restaurants, pubs and bars shape your experience.

I moved to Oxford three years ago and the abundance offantastic restaurants to choose from never ceases to amazeme.

Oxford, as a city, is defined by the colleges, the culture anda history which is second to none.

To spend a day in Oxford enjoying a stroll around apicturesque college, followed by some punting and then acoffee in a small café is my idea of heaven, but being able toround the day off in one of the many excellent restaurantsOxford has to offer makes the day perfect.

But don’t feel limited to the city centre. If you’re visitingOxford, why not extend your stay and make sure you sampleone of the superb restaurants beyond the city walls.

With many a short taxi ride away, you can immerse yourselfin rural Oxfordshire and see why our beautiful county is notonly an attraction to visitors from afar, it’s also a wonderfulplace to live.

The Trout in Lower Wolvercote is genuinely part of the rich tapestry thatis Oxford life. With a large terrace looking out onto the River Thames, itis easy to see why The Trout is the pub of dreams. With visitors fromLewis Carroll to CS Lewis, you can understand why so many people loveto sit outside on a summer’s day with a lovely glass of wine or a chilledbeer and watch the fast moving waters.

Step inside and you’ll find an exquisite country pub with a greatatmosphere that has been tastefully restored to incorporate its historicvalues with stylish modern aspects. The Trout, famous long before it wasimmortalised in Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse novels, is a pub that rollswith the seasons; warm and cosy in the winter, cool and colourful in thesummer, it’s the perfect place to be for any occasion surrounding goodfood and wine.

Browns achieved ‘Oxford institution’ status many years ago. Locatedconveniently in the centre of Oxford, but just far enough away from thebusiest shopping streets to give it a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, the restaurant attracts a wide range of customers from families tobusinessmen, students to tourists. In the summer tables spill out ontothe pavement emphasising the French brassiere feel, while in the colderwinter months the restaurant always looks friendly, warm and enticing.

The menu is broad offering breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinnerwith a la carte appetizers and starters through to fish and meat courses, and dangerously tempting desserts. This wealth of choice includes thetimeless Browns classics such as Steak Mushroom & Guinness Pie, thehealthy House Salad with a choice of toppings or everyone's favourite,Fish & Chips! The Browns twist on the Eton Mess and the chef's dailyspecials including Fish of the Day keep the menu fresh and interesting.A wide range of cocktails, beers and wines complement all occasionsand tastes.

The 400 year old Chequers at Burcot standing just off the A415 about 5miles south of Oxford has come a long way since multi-award-winningchef Steven Sanderson first took the reins in 2006. Steve’s cooking isintelligent, straight forward and elegant, with simplicity, flavour and skillat the top of his agenda. His ability to create home comfort and nostalgicfood with a modern twist is evident throughout the ever evolving menu.Steve‘s kitchen garden provides organic vegetables and salads whichappear on the menu, so seasons truly speak for themselves. It’s not hardto see why celebrities and sportsmen are regularly seen at The Chequers, nor why the restaurant is so highly regarded by some of the country’s topchefs. Booking is always recommended.

When we opened Pierre Victoire in 1996 we wanted to createsomewhere for people to enjoy authentically cooked, traditional dishes inan informal environment at reasonable prices, the way the French do…Sixteen years on, and we’re still doing just that – and we’re busier thanever!

Our team of chefs, led by Pascal Bouchet, have earned high praise fortheir signature dishes such as Duck Confit, escargot, moules-frites,tartiflette and fondue savoyarde. And the restaurant itself is certainlyinformal with its rustic furniture and candles, but our customers love it,and most are regulars.

Eat from £6.90 at lunch time, and in the evening choose from the à lacarte menu or one of a number of prix fixe menus, such as thepre-theatre menu which offers 2 courses and coffee for £10.50. Forgroups and parties of up to 60 wanting to celebrate a birthday orgraduation, we offer several 2 and 3 course menus starting at £17.50.We also have a special three course a la carte menu, Sun to Fri, £21.00.
