OXFORD 4-H VOLUNTEER TRIBUTE AWARD Volunteers are the foundation of the 4-H program. The recognition of volunteers is and continues to be an important function. If we look to volunteers as the roots of success and the service and talents they expend to 4-H, then we see where the growth of 4-H really is. Therefore, the Oxford 4-H Association is recognizing volunteers with an “Oxford 4-H Volunteer Tribute Award”.

This award is open to all 4-H volunteers, present, past, or posthumously, including club leaders and non-traditional volunteers, who have made a difference to Oxford 4-H. Nominees must have shown significant leadership and initiative and made a positive impact on 4-H in Oxford County (club, county). Nominee’s involvement in other community activities/organizations will be considered as well. 4-H Volunteers can be nominated more than one time, but only receive the award once.

Deadline for Nominations is November 1st of the current calendar year.

For more information please contact: Shonna Ward 519-462-2341 [email protected] Geoff Innes 519-539-3189 [email protected]

Consider nominating someone who has made an impact on you and your community! Nomination forms and full details are available from the above contacts or from the Communication Coordinator (Linda).

OXFORD 4-H JUDGING COMPETITION July 9, 2011 - 8:45am to noon

Woodstock Fairgrounds,

This event is for all 4-H members in Oxford County NOT just for Dairy club members!. There are both lifeskill and agricultural items to judge. Each member also does a General 4-H knowledge quiz and an identification quiz.

You judge all the time – how to wear your hair, which pair of jeans to buy, how to occupy your Friday night, etc. Judging is a formal way of examining the pros and cons of each item, making a decision and telling someone about it. In 4-H, judging is appreciating the standards of an item and deciding which one comes up to the standard. Come on out to the Judging Competition and find out how much you know!

Registration Deadline

Extended to June 3rd

BATTERY BLITZ An opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted used batteries year round! Depots: Stratford Farm Equipment, Woodstock Ward’s Tire, Ostrander FS Partners, Norwich Knoops Farm Service, Embro Eastwood Auto Electric, Eastwood Great Lakes New Holland Inc, Tavistock (formerly Tavistock Farm Equipment) Did you know???? Oxford was the original county that started this unique project with the double impact of Fundraising plus getting rid of a hazardous waste from the environment.

The originator of Oxford’s Battery Blitz was a past Oxford 4-H leader – Norman Dickout. He felt people were tired of the usual fundraising projects and he saw a real problem and potential hazard with the number of dead batteries found around farm yards. Putting these two ideas together gave the oxford County 4-H Association an unusual fund raising project to attempt. In 1990, the first Oxford Battery Blitz was started and resulted in 1000 batteries being collected for recycling. Unfortunately, Norman had a fatal accident and the blitz was not going to continue due to the dedicated hours of effort Norman contributed to the running of the program.

In 1991, OCFA picked up the project with the commitment that the first $1000 would go the Oxford County 4-H clubs and any money over the $1000 would be put in a special account to be kept separate from OCFA’s general account. The funds accumulating in this account were to be used for youth and environmental projects. For example: OCFA along with Fanshawe College-Woodstock set up a bursary fund totalling $10,000. Starting in 1993, an award, the Norman Dickout and OCFA Award for Environmental Studies was given to a select student entering their second year of the Environmental Engineering Technician course, along with a $500 cheque. A quote from the Sentinel Review, July 22, 1992 describes the importance of this program, “Now that’s recycling with a real meaning. The old batteries you want to get rid of are turned into cash whch is used to educate recyclers. A perfect circle of reusing opportunities.”

In 2002 the Environmental Engineering Technician course was discontinued at Fanshawe. The award is no presented to an Oxford County student entering their second year at Fanshawe College.

OFCA’s Battery Blitz’s have collected well over 600,000 lbs of old lead acid batteries for recycling. OCFA’s Battery Blitz is the most recognized and longest running project of this type in the province. This is mainly due to the effort of OCFA’s volunteers, the dealers that hose OCFA’s depots and the ongoing support from Oxford County and surrounding communities.

Large Bale Decoration Contest for Woodstock Fair The Woodstock Fair Ambassador committee is hosting a large bale decorating again this year at the ambassador competition. Bales will be sitting on their end and all decorations must be removable so the bale can be used at a later date. The bales will be used as decoration around the fairgrounds during the fair. There will be cash prizes! Team size minimum 4 participants. Please pre-register teams.

Application and competition details at http://www.woodstockfairgrounds.com and follow the links at the bottom of the page.
