Higher education begins at 18 and usually lasts three or four years.

Students go to universities, polytechnics or colleges of higher education.

There are now about 80 universities in Great Britain.

The academic year is divided into three terms.

Terminal examinations are held at the end of autumn, spring and summer terms. Only two reexaminations are allowed.

British universities usually keep to the customs of the past. Upon graduation all the students have to wear long black gowns and “students caps”.

OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE Universities, which were founded in 12-13 centuries, are the oldest and the most prestigious universities in Great Britain. They are often called collectively Oxbridge.

Both universities are independent. Only the education elite goes to Oxford and Cambridge. Many prominent people studied here.

The tutorial system is one of the ways in which these universities differ from all other. Every student has a tutor who plans his work.

CAMBRIDGECAMBRIDGECambridge- is one of the best known in

the world. It’s famous for its university, which started during the 13th century; there are more than 20 colleges.

The oldest one is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284.

And the most recent is Robinson College, which was opened in 1977.

But the most famous is King’s College, because of its magnificent chapel.

The universities were only for men until 19th century, when the first women's college was opened.

Nowadays almost all colleges are mixed.

Oxford is one of the oldest universities in

Europe. The first of its colleges was founded in 1249.

The university now has 35 colleges and about 13 thousand students, many of them from other countries.

Oxford is, of course, famous for its first-class education as well as its beautiful buildings. Oxford has the finest architecture in Britain.
