FUEL

For best results. use regular grade.unleaded gasoline with pump stickeroctane rating of 87 or higher.

Unleaded is recommended since itleaves less combustion chamber deposits. However, leaded regular grademay also be used. See service frequency footnote under the ServiceProcedures table on page 5.

Fresh gasoline ensures a fuel blendedfor the season and reduces the possibility of gum deposits forming andclogging the fuel system. Do not usegasoline left over from the previousseason.

TEMPERATURE RANGE EXPECTED BEFORE NEXT OIL CHANGE

Do not add oil to the gasoline.

Do not use gasoline/alcohol blends(gasohol) as fuel for Kohler engines.

Do not overfill fuel tank-leave someroom for fuel to expand.

WARNING:' Gasoline is extremelyflammable and its vapors can explodeif ignited. Store gasoline only in approved containers, in unoccupiedbuildings, away from sparks or flames.Do not add gasoline while engine ishot or running or start engine aroundspilled fuel. Never use gasoline as acleaning agent.

OIL

Before starting engine, fill the crankcase with the proper type and quantityof oil.

Use high quality detergent oil of service class SF, SE, SO, or SC. Selectviscosity based on air temperature attime of operation.

A logo or symbol on oil containersidentifies the viscosity grade and APIdesignation.

Straight 30 weight oil is preferred. Ifmulti-viscosity oil is used. be aware ofresulting increase in oil consumptionand in combustion deposits whenused in temperatures above 32° F (00

C).

Using oil other than the serviceclasses listed, or oil change intervalslonger than recommended, could reduce engine life. Damage to enginesdue to improper maintenance or useof incorrect oil quality and/or viscosityis not covered by the engine warranty.

CHECKING OIL

The importance of checking andchanging crankcase oil cannot beoveremphasized. Insufficient oil, ordirty oil causes premature enginewear and failure.

Check oil before each use when theengine is cool and the oil has drainedback into the sump. Add oil, if low, tobring level up to. but not over, the "F"mark on the dipstick.

Oil should always be checked whileengine is off and on a level surface.

With threaded plug-type dipstick. remove and wipe oil off-reinsert, butdo not turn plug in. To check oil level, shoulder plug on top of hole. Afterchecking. again turn plug all the wayinto crankcase.

With extended oil fill tube and dipstick, push dipstick all the way downin tube then take reading.

-rOperating

lL

CAUTION: Do not operate enginewith oil level below "L" mark or overthe "F" mark.

OIL CHANGE

On a new engine, change oil aft~r thefirst 5 hours of operation and thenevery 25 operating hours thereafter.

Complete drainage will better beachieved if engine can be tilted slightly toward oil drain.

Drain oil while engine is still warmfrom operation-it flows freely andcarries away more impurities. (SeeEngine Identification illustration forlocation of drai n plug.) After drai ning, reinstall drain plug. Fill with properviscosity oil to "F" mark on dipstick.Always check level on dipstick beforeadding more oil.

Engine must be on a level surfacewhen filling and checking oil.BrentChalmers.comBrentChalmers.com

WARNING: Engine exhaust gasescontain poisonous carbon monoxide.Avoid inhaling exhaust fumes andnever run the engine in a closedbuilding or confined area.

STARTING

If engine is equipped with a clutch, make sure it is disengaged beforestarting, and if equipped with a transmission, make sure it is in neutralbefore starting.

Be especially careful on equipmentwith hydro-static drive. Shift levermust be exactly in NEUTRAL positionor resistance will be placed on thenormal rotation of the engine andprevent it from starting.

Move the throttle control lever to midpoint of travel.

Move choke lever into full choke position and gradually return to OFF position after engine starts and warms up.

Rope StartPull starter handle straight out. Asmooth steady pull will start engine.

Retractable StartA smooth steady pull will start engine.Pull starter handle straight out toavoid excessive rope wear from starterrope guide.

While retractable starters do not require servicing, the rope should bechecked occasionally to make sure itis in good condition. If frayed, have itreplaced immediately by your KohlerEngine Service Dealer.

WARNING: Before checking rope, remove spark plug lead to preventengine from starting-and make certain equipment is in neutral.

Electric Start

Activate starter switch. As soon asengine starts, release switch.

Do not crank engine continuously formore than 10 seconds at a time.

'A 60 second cool-down period mustbe allowed between cranking attemptsif the engine does not start. Failure tofollow these guidelines may result inburn-out of the starter motor.

CAUTION: In the event of "falsestart," that is, if the engine developssufficient speed to disengage thestarter, but fails to continue running, the engine must be allowed to cometo a complete stop before a restartattempt is made. (If starter is engagedwhile flywheel is still rotating, thestarter pinion and flywheel ring gearmay clash, resulting in damage to thestarter.)

If starter does not turn the engineover, shut off starter immediately andmake no further attempt to start engine until the condition is corrected. For trouble analysis see your KohlerEngine Service Dealer.

Starter motors are prelubricated.Brushes normally will require attention only after extended use.

BatteryNormally a 12-volt battery with a rating of approximately 32-amp hoursshould be used. Refer to operating

instructions of the equipment thisengine powers for specific information.

If battery charge is not sufficient toturn starter motor over, recharge thebattery. Do not attempt to jump startthe engine with another battery-batteries larger than those recommendedcan cause starter motor burn-out.

Also refer to Battery Charging.

OPERATING

NOTE: Check your local laws andstatutes regarding engine spark arrestor muffler requirements. See yourKohler Engine Service Dealer for optional spark arrestor muffler.

CAUTION: Do not operate enginecontinuously at an angle exceeding30° in any direction-as engine damage may result from lack of sufficientlubrication.

Also refer to operating instructions ofthe equipment this engine powers-itmay have more stringent guidelinesas to angle of operation due toequipment design.

If debris builds up on air intake areaand air screen during engine operation, STOP engine immediately andclean off. An obstructed screen cancause engine overheating.

WARNING: The engine and the exhaust system get extremely hot fromoperation. Do not operate equipmentwith shrouds, equipment covers, orguards removed. Keep hands, feet, clothing, and hair away from all moving parts.

Do not allow equipment to run unattended.

WARNING: Do not tamper with thegovernor setting-overspeed is hazardous and could void warranty.

STOPPING

Turn ignition switch OFF. On enginesso equipped, press and hold STOPbutton until engine comes to a complete stop.BrentChalmers.comBrentChalmers.com

SPARK PLUG

Clean area around spark plug beforeremoving to prevent dirt from entering engine. Every 100 operating hoursremove plug, check condition andreset gap to 0.035 in. (0.90 mm), orreplace plug if necessary. See Specifications.

Carefully note spark plug appearance-it can indicate ignition trouble.

If heavy black, or blistered white, deposits are noted, see your KohlerEngine Service Dealer for analysis. An incorrect spark plug, cracked porcelain, or improper spark gap cancause the engine to misfire.

Do not clean spark plug in machineusing abrasive grit. Replace plugwhen dirty.

Torque plug to 18-22 ft. Ibs. (24-30Nm) (2.5-3.0 kgm).

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTCarburetor adjustments should be made only after engine has warmed up.

'If blaCk exhaust smoke is noted, check the air filter first - an apparent "overrich"mixture can actually be a clogged air filter element. If, after element is replaced, blacksmoke or other problems continue, adjust carburetor immediately.

The carburetor is designed to deliverthe correct mixture of fuel and air tothe engine for all operating conditions. Carburetors are set at the factory and normally should not have tobe adjusted. If your engine exhibitsconditions similar to those found inthe table, it may be necessary toadjust your carburetor.

Turning adjusting screws in (clockwise) decreases the supply of fuel tothe carburetor giving a leaner fuel-airmixture. Turning adjusting screws out(counterclockwise) increases the supply of fuel to the carburetor giving aricher fuel-air mixture.

An incorrect setting can lead to afouled spark plug, overheating, excessive valve wear, or other problems.See your Kohler Engine Service Dealer for assistance.

To Adjust Carburetor:

1. Stop engine, turn main fuel andidle fuel adjusting screws clockwise, until they bottom lightly.

Condition

1. Black, sooty exhaust smoke', enginesluggish.

2. Engine misses and backfires at highspeed.

3. Engine starts, sputters and stops undercold weather starting.

4. Engine runs rough or stalls at idlespeed.

CAUTION: Main fuel and idle fueladjusting screws are screw-typeneedle valves which taper to critical dimensions. Damage to thesescrews will result if they are turnedin forcefully.

2. Preliminary Setting-Main FuelFor models K241 and K301 - turnmain fuel adjusting screw out 1-1/2turns from bottom. For modelsK321 and K341-turn main fuel adjusting screw out 2-1/2 turns frombottom. Idle Fuel - For all models-turn idle fuel adjusting screw out2-1/2 turns from bottom.

3. Final Setting-Main Fuel-Runengine at half-throttle for 5-10minutes to warm up. With throttlein wide open position and underload, if possible, turn main fueladjusting screw in from the preliminary setting until speed decreases and note position of theadjusting screw. Now turn adjusting screw out-the engine speed

Possible Cause/Probable Remedy

1. Mixture too rich - turn main fuel adjusting screw clockwise.

2. Mixture too lean - turn main fuel adjusting screw counterclockwise.

3. Mixture too lean - turn main fuel adjusting screw counterclockwise.

4. Idle speed too low or improper idlemixture - turn idle speed adjustingscrew, then idle fuel adjusting screwif needed.

may first increase, then it will decrease as the adjusting screw isturned. Note the position of theadjusting screw when engine speedstarts to decrease. Set the adjusting screw midway between the twopoints noted.

4. Final Setting-Idle Fuel-Runeng ine at half-th rottle for 5-10minutes to warm up. Allow enginespeed to fall to idle, or put throttleinto idle position. Make adjustmentusing the same procedure as instep 3.

NOTE: Idle speed should not exceed 1500 RPM. Recommendedidle speed is 1200 RPM-see Step5.

5. Idle Speed Setting-Run engine athalf-throttle for 5-10 minutes towarm up. Allow engine speed tofall to idle, or put throttle into idlepositon. Set engine speed to 1200RPM (-t75 RPM) by turning the idlespeed adjusting screw in or out.BrentChalmers.comBrentChalmers.com
