Calling all stargazers! The Cerritos Library invites you to participate in International Observe the Moon Night. Activities for kids and an opportunity to view the moon through a telescope will be presented near the “Tsunami” sculpture outside the Library. Cerritos High School science students and the Seal Beach Astronomers will provide telescopes for the public to view the moon. Participants are also invited to bring their own telescopes and join in this worldwide celebration of lunar science and exploration.

CHiLDreN’S Art & SHort Story CoNteStS

The Friends of the Cerritos Library will conduct the 16th Annual Art Contest for children in grades K-6 and a Short Story Contest for children in grades 3-6. “A Busy City” is the theme for the art contest and “An Unexpected Adventure” is the theme for the short story contest. Participants must have a valid Cerritos Library card. The deadline to turn in all entries is Friday, October 19 before 9 p.m.

Design a picture on “A Busy City.” Artwork must be no larger than 12” x 18” and unmounted. Only one art entry is allowed per child.

Short Stories about “An Unexpected Adventure” must be original, using no more than 500 words and preferably typed on white letter-sized paper. Only one short story entry is allowed per child.

Application forms are available at the Children’s Help Desk and on the Library’s website. Winners will receive gift certificates of $20, $15 and $10 from Barnes & Noble at a special reception. For more information, contact Librarian Eric Cardoso at (562) 916-1343.

FrieNDS FALL BooK SALeThe Friends of the Cerritos Library will hold its Fall

Book Sale in the Skyline Room of the Cerritos Library according to the schedule below. Membership to the Friends’ group will be available at the door on Friday evening. The cost of memberships for individuals is $10, family $15, organization and corporations $25 and life membership $100. A great selection of fiction and nonfiction books will be available at bargain prices. Come early for the best selection.

Following the craft, Cerritos Library staff will reenact the story of “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda D. Williams. Join us as this little old lady braves her way through the woods one autumn night! Songs will be included in this 45 minute presentation. Space is limited to 35 participants. Students will receive an overview of the free cloudLibrary service and practice checking out digital eBooks and eAudio-books using their tablet or mobile device. Participants must have a valid Cerritos Library card and a WiFi capable mobile device such as the Kindle Fire, Android/Samsung Galaxy Tab, NOOK Tablet 7 or Apple iOS (iPad, iPod, iPhone). (Par-ticipants must also be able to download an app to the device, which requires an ID and password for Amazon, Google Play or Apple ID/iTunes, as well as access to a personal e-mail).
