Overvoltage Protection class I with spark gap

Class I, sparkover gap

Weidmüller series PU 1 TSG and PU B(class I), PU x C (class II) plus PU D andPO D (class III) overvoltage protectiondevices lower the overvoltage protectionlevel to below the limits prescribed by theinsulation coordination to DIN VDE 0110.This means that the entire system issubjected to less interference.

The coordination of the arresters isachieved by technical means. This meansthat decoupling between classes I, II andIII is not necessary.

gap is tripped, a safety clearance of min. 100 mm must be maintained between this and any current-conductingcomponents.

The maximum permissible operating voltage Uc is 330 or 440 Vac. Decoupling from downstream class II (C) arresters for470 V is unnecessary because triggered sparkover gaps with alow sparkover voltage are used.

Please follow the installation instructions.

Checking operation, maintenance and approvals

A visual check is necessary to ensure that PU 1 TSG and PU 1TSG+ overvoltage protection components are operatingcorrectly. Besides signalling a mains power failure, the lampilluminates above 120 Vac to indicate the failure of the firingelectronics. It is advisable to check frequently during stormyweather.

The use of triggered sparkover gaps achieves a very lowprotection level of < 1.5 kV with high discharge currents.Depending on the cross-section of the line, the PU 1 TSG mustbe protected with a fuse of max. 125 A gL, the PU 1 TSG+max. 250 A gL.

The connection is designed for the following cross-sections:

– solid wire: 10...35 mm2,

– multistrand wire: 10...25 mm2.

The operating temperature range is –40 °C ... +85 °C.

The PU 1 TSG lightning arresters have UL and KEMA approvaland are hence suitable for use worldwide.

Lightning conductors with spark gap for lightingprotection equipotential bonding Overvoltage Protectionclass I (B charge eliminators)

According to the requirements of class B (DIN VDE 0675 part 6(draft 11.89)/A1: 3/96) and class I as per IEC 61643-1 (1/02),the lightning conductor at the transfer from interface 0 to 1 (as per IEC 1312-1) is used as the lightning protectionequipotential bonding. In combination with several lightningprotectors, the overvoltage protection is used in the mainsforms TN, TT and IT.

When lightning strikes, the triggered air gap protector providesthe necessary equipotential bonding between the building light-ning protection and the earthing system of the power supply.

The use of a sparkover gap satisfies the inspection require-ments for class B overvoltage protection systems according tothe VDEW (Association of German Power Stations) directive(1st ed., 1998).

Electrical connection for building installation

The PU 1 TSG 35 kA class I lightning arrester is connectedbetween the phase conductors (L1, L2, L3) and the N/PE. AWeidmüller PU 1 TS G 50 kA is used to provide the N-PEsparkover gap. The lines for this should be kept as short aspossible.

The triggered and non-blowout PU 1 TSG devices can beclipped to TS 35 rails in electrical cabinets or distributionboards. The maximum permissible operating voltage Uc is 260 Vac. Decoupling from downstream class II (C) arresters isunnecessary because triggered sparkover gaps with a lowsparkover voltage are used.

Please follow the installation instructions.

Electrical connection for industrial installations

The PU 1 TSG+ 50 kA/330 V or 440 V class I lightning arresteris connected between the phase conductors (L1, L2, L3) andthe N/PE. A Weidmüller PU 1 TSG 50 kA is used to provide theN-PE sparkover gap. The lines for this should be kept as shortas possible.

The triggered and blowout PU 1 TSG+ 50 kA devices can beclipped to TS 35 rails in electrical cabinets or distributionboards. Owing to the emissions given off when the sparkover

In contrast to conventional sparkover gaps, the Weidmüller PU1 TSG+ and PU 1 TSG sparkover gaps operate with electronictriggering. This fires the sparkover gap at such an early pointthat the downstream class II (Pu x C) arresters are relieved.Decoupling from downstream class II (C) arresters isunnecessary because triggered sparkover gaps with a lowsparkover voltage are used.

Protection in the TN-S-system

Protecion in the TT-system

The PU 1 TSG+ and PU 1 TSG differ in terms of the followcurrent extinction. The PU 1 TSG+ distributes the arc dropvoltage over several chambers. As soon as the total arc dropvoltage exceeds the mains voltage flowing, the follow current is extinguished. In the PU 1 TSG the follow current extinctiontakes place at the next current zero of the mains voltage.

Weidmüller overvoltage protection type PU B is designed forlightning protection equipotential bonding to DIN VDE 0185part 1 (Nov 1982). The PU B is a class I lightning arrester (B arrester) to DIN VDE 0675 part 6 (Nov 1989), IEC 61643-1(Feb 1998), ENV 61024-1 (Jan 1995) and IEC 1312-1 (Feb1995).

In the event of a lightning strike, the integral plug-in high-powervaristors create the necessary equipotential bonding betweenthe building’s lightning protection system and the earthingsystem of the power supply.

Electrical connection

The PU B class I lightning arresters are connected between the phase conductors (L1, L2, L3), or the neutral conductor, the earth of the consumer installation and – in addition – theearthing bar of the distribution board. The lines for this shouldbe kept as short as possible.

The PU B is clipped to a TS 35 rail in the switching cabinet ordistribution board. The maximum permissible operating voltageUc is 275 Vac. No inductances are required for decouplingfrom downstream class II (C) arresters.

Please follow the installation instructions.

Checking operation, maintenance and approvals

A visual check is necessary – more frequently during storms –to ensure that the PU B overvoltage protection componentsare operating correctly. This visual check is easy because thevaristor is fitted with a thermal disconnector. If this has beentripped and protection is no longer provided, the flag in thestatus window changes from green to red. A tripped arrester is easily replaced by a qualified technician without having todisconnect any wiring.

The top section of the varistor is coded according to voltageand – to distinguish it from class II overvoltage arresters (C arresters) – integrated in a black plastic housing (PA 6.6).Therefore, it is not possible to plug in a different, i.e. wrong, replacement varistor.

These plug-in high-power varistors achieve a very lowprotection level of < 2 kV with high discharge currents. Thearrester is to be fused (max. 160 A gL) to suit the cross-sectionof the line. The use of varistors means that overvoltages do notgive rise to any emissions within the installation.

The connection is to be designed to IEC 947-7-1 for thefollowing cross-sections:

– solid wire: 6...10 mm2,

– multistrand wire: 16...25 mm2,

– fine strand wire 10...25 mm2.

The operating temperature range is –40 °C ... +60 °C.

The PU B is an arrester that can be used both as a class I andalso a class II arrester.

Weidmüller PU B lightning arresters have UL approval and arehence suitable for use worldwide.

The PU I+II COMBI combined overvoltage protectionincorporates triggered PU 1 TSG class I sparkover gaps, classII varistor arresters PU x C and cross-connections. This setupprotects low-voltage consumer installations and electronicdevices against overvoltages, both those caused by atmosphericdischarges (lightning) and those caused by switching operations(transients).

The PU COMBI complies with the requirements of IEC 61643-1 (Feb 1998). The PU R COMBI also has a remote signallingfunction achieved via a floating contact.

Electrical connection

The PU COMBI overvoltage protection device is connectedwith lines as short as possible between the phase conductors(L1, L2, L3), or the neutral conductor (N), and the earth of theconsumer installation. Unprotected lines (e.g. to meters) andprotected lines must not be routed together.

The PU COMBI can be supplied for a 4-conductor system withthree phases plus PEN conductor, and also for a 5-conductorsystem with three phases plus N-PE arrester.

Checking operation, maintenance and approvals

A visual check is necessary to ensure that the PU COMBIovervoltage protection components are operating correctly. This visual check is easy because the arrester is fitted with athermal disconnector. If this has been tripped and protection isno longer provided, the flag in the status window changes fromgreen to red. A tripped arrester is easily replaced by a qualifiedtechnician without having to disconnect any wiring. The topsection of the varistor is coded according to voltage. Therefore,it is not possible to plug in a different, i.e. wrong, replacementvaristor.

The cross-section of the earth line must be at least 10 mm2 orhalf the cross-sectional area of the phase conductor. The fuseprotection (max. 125 A gL) for the PU modules is chosendepending on the line cross-section and the type of wiring.

The connection is designed to IEC 947-7-1 for the followingcross-sections:

solid wire: 10...35 mm2

multistrand wire: 10...25 mm2

fine strand wire: 10...25 mm2

The operating temperature range is –40 °C ... +60 °C.

Weidmüller overvoltage protection type PU C protects low-voltage consumer installations and electronic devices againstovervoltages, both those caused by atmospheric discharges(lightning) and those caused by switching operations(transients). The PU C complies with the requirements of DIN VDE 0675 part 6, class C (Nov 1989), (draft) DIN VDE0675 part 6, A2 (Oct 1996), ÖVE SN 60 parts 1 and 4, andIEC 61643-1 (Feb 1998).

PU C arresters forthe "3+1” circuit are also available.

PU C overvoltage protection is available as a compact module,3- or 4-pole, with up to 100 kA (8/20 µs), with the PEconnections of the discs already interconnected. Versions canbe supplied for the following rated voltages:

• 60 Vac,

• 115/230 Vac,

• 230/400 Vac,

• 470/600 Vac,

• for ”3+1” circuits

• special types for IT systems

Checking operation, maintenance and approvals

A visual check is necessary to ensure that the PU COMBIovervoltage protection components are operating correctly. This visual check is easy because the arrester is fitted with athermal disconnector. If this has been tripped and protection isno longer provided, the flag in the status window changes fromgreen to red. A tripped arrester is easily replaced by a qualifiedtechnician without having to disconnect any wiring.

The top section of the varistor is coded according to voltageand – to distinguish it from class I overvoltage arresters (B arresters) – integrated in a light grey plastic housing (PA 6.6).Therefore, it is not possible to plug in a different, i.e. wrong, replacement varistor.

The cross-section of the earth line must be at least 10 mm2 orhalf the cross-sectional area of the phase conductor. The fuseprotection (max. 125 A gL) for the PU modules is chosendepending on the line cross-section and the type of wiring.

Weidmüller PU C arresters have ÖVE SN 60 and UL approvaland are hence suitable for use worldwide.

The connection is designed to IEC 947-7-1 for the followingcross-sections:

– solid wire: 6...10 mm2,

– multistrand wire: 16...25 mm2,

– fine strand wire: 10...25 mm2.

The operating temperature range is –40 °C ... +60 °C.

Our overvoltage protection PU D protects low-voltageconsumers and electronic devices from overvoltage caused byatmospheric discharges (thunderstorm) or switchingprocedures (transients).

The PU D can be mounted in small or storey distributionboards.

PU D corresponds to the requirements of DIN VDE 0675, part6, class C, 11/89, part 6, A2 10/96 and IEC 61643-1 02/98.

Electrical connection

PU D overvoltage protection is installed after the PU C beforethe device/consumer being protected. It can protect circuits upto 16 A.

For example, an installation for a circuit in small distributionboards can be used to protect a monitor.

Functional checks and maintenance

Ageing of the varistors can cause high temperatures at the va-ristors. In low voltage systems, this can cause a fire. The integrated temperature monitoring automaticallydisconnects the varistor from the power supply. This is indicated by the glow lamp going off. Types PO DS alsoequipped with a switching contact to report this.

The back-up fuse depends on the conductor cross-sectionand type of routing. For PU D charge eliminators, the maximumpower rating is up to 16 A.

The connection is rated to IEC 947-7-1 for the following cross-sections:

solid conductor: 0,5...2,5 mm2

flexible conductor: 0,5...2,5 mm2

The operating temperature range is from –25 °C ... +55 °C, and the storage temperature range is from –40 °C ... +60 °Cbetragen.

The PU D ZS plug-in overvoltage protection device providesprotection against transient overvoltages for equipment pluggedinto earthed power sockets. The plug-in overvoltage protectionwith its earthed power socket is designed for 230 V/16 A, fulfilsthe requirements of class III to IEC 61643-1 and is used inconjunction with class II, the PU C protection.

The PU D ZS is fitted with components to monitor varistortemperature. In the event of an excessive temperature rise dueto pulses from the mains supply, these disconnect the unit. The integral red warning lamp indicates that protection is nolonger provided. The PU D ZS must then be replaced.

The PU D ZS analog plug-in overvoltage protection deviceprovides protection against transient overvoltages for equipmentand analogue devices plugged into earthed power sockets.Besides the use of standard telephones, an analogue installationcan also transmit data services like fault signalling systems andInternet. The fact that besides telephones other devices like faxmachines and modems are also connected to the analogue linemeans that the hazards due to transient interference phenomenalike overvoltages are on the increase.

In order to achieve protection against these overvoltages, combined overvoltage protection for analogue lines and mainsvoltages is incorporated. The basic version of this power socketadapter is protected by two-stage overvoltage protectionachieved with gas discharge tube and fast-acting suppressiondiodes.

The gas discharge tube achieves a high energy discharge; thesuppression diodes ensure a low residual voltage.

The PU D ZS digital plug-in overvoltage protection providesprotection against transient overvoltages for equipment anddigital devices plugged into earthed power sockets. This powersocket adapter is available for Uko and So interfaces.

In order to achieve protection against these overvoltages, combined overvoltage protection for digital lines and mainsvoltages is incorporated. The basic version of this power socketadapter is protected by two-stage overvoltage protectionachieved with gas discharge tube and fast-acting suppressiondiodes.

The gas discharge tube achieves a high energy discharge; thesuppression diodes ensure a low residual voltage.

In the PU D ZS with the RJ45 sockets a connecting line withRJ45 plugs at both ends is included with the product.

WAVEFILTERS for simple radio interferencessuppression in the switching cabinet

The WAVEFILTER series eliminates the time-consuming needto screw in mains filters. These filters are simply clipped on tothe TS35 and connected to the device needing suppression. The two-stage WAVEFILTER with overall width 22.5 mm indesigns 1 A, 3 A, 6 A and 10 A offers high attenuation.

The WAVEFILTER with current-compensating choke is ideal forapplications in drive technology and control/automationtechnology, e.g. for suppressing continuous interference typessuch as “noise” or “ripple” from interfering radiation from othersystems or interference from frequency converters andswitched-mode power supplies. A short, low-ohm massconnection is required for the WAVEFILTER to functionperfectly. We recommend earthing all devices directly with thelargest possible cross-section to a central earthing point in theswitching cabinet.

Interference signals

We distinguish between two types of induced transient andcontinuous interference signals: Symmetrical (differential mode)and asymmetrical (common mode). The symmetricalinterference signals generate voltage between the signal leadsof the system. The asymmetrical interference voltages occurbetween the signal leads and earth.

The WAVEFILTER is suitable of attenuating both kinds ofinterference signal. In addition, WAVEFILTER 10 A also has anearthing conductor choke. This earthing conductor chokesupports both attenuation on the earthing conductor for thefilter and additional attenuation of asymmetrical interferencevoltages.

The overvoltage protection may only be installed by suitablyqualified personnel.During the installation, please observe theconnection conditions specific to the country of application.

1. Application

The PU C overvoltage protection to class C (class II) protectslow-voltage consumer installations and electronic devicesagainst overvoltages that can occur as a result of atmosphericdischarges (thunderstorms) or switching operations. The PU Ccomplies with VDE 0675 part 6, class C (draft, Nov 1989), DINVDE 0675 part 6, A2 (Oct 1996), IEC 61643-1 (Feb 1998) andÖVE SN 60 parts 1 and 4. High-power metal oxide varistorsare employed as the voltage-limiting component.

The PU B is a class B (class I) lightning arrester complying withDIN VDE 0675 part 6 (Nov 1989), IEC 61643-1 (Feb 1998),ENV 61024-1 (Jan 1995) and IEC 1312-1 (Feb 1995). Theintegral varistors create the necessary equipotential bonding(lightning protection equipotential bonding according to DINVDE 0185 part 1, Nov 1982) between the building’s lightningprotection and the earthing system of the power supply duringlightning strikes.

The PU D overvoltage protection to class D (class III) protectslow-voltage consumer installations and electronic devicesagainst overvoltages and switching operations. The PU D isintegrated in addition after the PU C in small/storey distributionboards. The PU D complies with DIN VDE 0675 part 6, classD(draft, Nov 1989), DIN VDE 0675 part 6, A2 (Oct 1996) and IEC61643-1 (Feb 1998).

2. Installation specifications

2.1 Place of installationThe PU C must be incorporated in a meter cupboard ordistribution board in such a way that the connection terminalcompartment is not accessible to unauthorised

persons. The PU B is incorporated near the incoming powerlines in order to create the necessary lightning protectionequipotential bonding between the lightning protection systemand the power distribution network. All arresters must beinstalled by a qualified electrician. The installation of systemswith overvoltage protection devices is described in VDE 0100

part 534 (Apr 1999) “Selection and installation of equipment”.This draft standard should be used in conjunction with thefollowing standards:

1. IEC 60364-4-43 “Protection from overvoltage due to atmospheric influencesand switching operations”

2. IEC 61024-1 “Protection of buildings against lightning”

3. IEC 61312-1“Protection against electromagnetic lightning pulses”

2.2 Electrical connection

The lines connecting the PU C overvoltage protection and thePU B lightning arrester between the phase conductor (L1, L2,L3) or neutral conductor (N) and earth (PE) of the consumerinstallation should be kept as short as possible. The routing ofprotected and unprotected lines together must be avoided.(See diagrams on pp. 70-71 for examples of connections.)

2.2.1 Connection to phase conductor and neutralconductor

As a rule, the conductor cross-section for the connection linesto the PU C or PU B arrester is selected as for the phaseconductor (L1, L2, L3) and neutral conductor (N). If a reducedcross-section is desired, a protective device (e.g. main terminalfuse) must guarantee short-circuit protection for the connectinglines. The connection terminals on the arresters may not beused as branch terminals. The backup fuse for the PU C shouldnot exceed 125 A gL. Upstream residual-current circuit-breakers(RCD) type S (3 kA, 8/20 µs) must be able to withstand surgecurrents. The backup fuse for the PU B should not exceed 160 A gL.

Note:

Three-pole PU C devices are employed in a TN-CS system (fig. 2). If the PE and N conductors of the PEN conductor arerouted separately, a four-pole PU should be used. In a TTsystem, a four-pole PU C protector can be installed togetherwith an arrester disconnector according to DIN VDE 0100-534/A1 (Oct 1996). To avoid accidental energisation betweenPE and N and to be able to omit arrester disconnectors, thePU 4 C TT module (Part No. 8416370000) provides the bestsolution (3+1 circuit). A 385 V PU 3 C is installed in an ITsystem with 400 V phase-to-phase voltage.

2.2.2 Installation of D arrester

The PU D arrester is installed in conjunction with a PU C, in thedownstream direction. The PU D is incorporated in the line to beprotected and can protect circuits up to 16 A. The installationcan be carried out in small distribution boards for single circuitsprotecting, for example, monitors. The PO DS is suitable forincorporating in situ, directly in devices or cable ducts.

2.2.3 Connection to earth

The earth line of the arrester is connected to the earth of theconsumer installation via the shortest route (= 0.5 m). Longer connecting lines reduce the effectiveness of theovervoltage protection. Routing the line parallel with otherelectrical cables should be avoided. In electrical consumerinstallations with equipotential bonding, an earthed equipotentialbonding rail is available as a connection point (see p. 56 ”Principles for low-voltage supplies”). A connection betweenthe arrester earth and the consumer installation earth mustalways be guaranteed. In TN systems the PEN conductor andthe arrester earth line should be connected together. The PENconductor of the power supply company may not be used asan earth. If the PE or PEN rail of a distribution board is used asan earth connection point, it is then necessary for this rail to beconnected to the consumer installation earth via a separateearth line.

Two earth connection terminals are available on the PU B. Bothterminals must be connected. One connection goes to theequipotential bonding connection of the building, the other tothe PE conductor of the installation. The cross-section for theearth line of the arrester is determined, as for lines, accordingto table 1 for the main equipotential bonding. It must be min.0.5 times the cross-section of the main protective conductor, where 25 mm2 copper is taken to be the upper limit and 10 mm2 copper the lower limit.

3. Checking the function

A visual inspection of PU overvoltage protection devices andlightning arresters is especially important during storms. If theflag in the status window or the LED is red, the overvoltageprotection device concerned must be replaced. Ageing of thevaristors can lead to high temperatures in the varistors. This situation can cause fires in low-voltage systems. Therefore, in a hazardous situation the integral temperaturemonitoring automatically disconnects the varistor from the po-wer supply. This disconnection is indicated by the warninglamp being extinguished, and in the PO DS or the PUxCR,

PUxBR and PU D by a switch contact as well. The backupfuse should be selected depending on the cross-section of theline and type of installation. Backup fuses of 16 A should beused for the PU D.

3.1 Replacement

If as described under point 3 above an arrester shows a redflag or red LED, it should be replaced by a qualified electrician. The individual class I and II and arresters are plug-in units andcoded according to voltage. When performance in- sulationresistance tests to DIN VDE 0100 part 610, the varistorarresters must be removed, e.g. by lifting off the top section. The arrester must be replaced by one suitable for the ratedvoltage of the system.

4. Connecting the remote signalling

4.1 Remote signalling with monitoring module typePUxCR, PUxBR or PU D

The signalling contact of a PUxCR or PUxBR is a changeovercontact and is connected to terminals 11 and 14. In normaloperation (green flag) terminals 11/12 are closed. In this situationterminals 11/14 are open. In the case of a fault (red flag),terminals 11/14 are closed and 11/12 open. In the PU D thetriggering of the disconnection device is signalled by the openingof an irreversible thermal release. The signalling circuit isconnected with twisted lines (e.g. NYM); parallel routing with theconnecting and earth lines must be avoided here. A protectioncircuit formed by an overvoltage fine protection correspondingto the voltage level reduces interference at and in the evaluator.

4.2 Remote signalling with photoelectric barrier type PU-O/S-E

Every PU C and PU B arrester is suitable for use with remotemonitoring and this can be retrofitted at any time. The transmitter must be clipped on to the top-hat rail to the leftand the receiver to the right of the PU blocks and the devicesconnected to a 230 V supply.

Afterwards, the remote signalling is connected to terminals11/14 and/or 11/12, as already described under point 4.1above. This system allows up to 40 overvoltage arresters to bemonitored simultaneously.

4.3 Approvals

PUxC(R) for 230/400 V power supply networks to ÖVE SN 60parts 1 and 4.

PU units are provided with CE and UL symbols.

Accessories

A system marker is available from LogiMark with the text“Warning! System protected by overvoltage arresters”. Lift offplug-in top section for insulation measurements. This yellowcard (Part No. 175184 1687) can be affixed with self-adhesivetape. Installation specification for PU1 TSG “Overvoltageprotection in power supply networks”.

1. Application

The arrester serves as lightning protection equipotentialbonding at the interface transition 0 to 1 (according to IEC1312-1) in accordance with the requirements of class B to DINVDE 0675 part 6 (draft, Nov 1989), A1 (Mar 1996) and therequirements of class I to IEC 61643-1 (Feb 1998).

Combinations of several overvoltage arresters are frequentlyused as an N-PE arrester in TN, TT and IT systems. The PU 1TSG 50 kA / 1.5 kV-260 V can be used in a combination circuitas a 50 kA sparkover gap between L and N in systemsdesigned for a short-circuit current of 500 A. The use of asealed sparkover gap satisfies the inspection requirements forclass B overvoltage protection systems according to the VDEWdirective (1st ed., 1998).

2. Installation instructions

2.1 Special installation conditions for metal distributionboards

The following points should be taken into consideration wheninstalling a PU x C:

1. The use of a plastic partition to separate it from adjacentmetal parts. It is recommended to incorporate a WTWpartition (Part No. 1058800000) or a WEW/2 end bracket(Part No. 1061200000).

2. The switching voltage of the PU x CR must be reduced to £ 48 V.

3. PU x C modules for Uc 550 V must always be closed withplastic covers.

2.2 Backup fuse

The overvoltage protection devices of the PU series exhibitpassive behaviour in normal operation; no current isconsumed. The necessary protection against short-circuits andoverloads is thus provided by a fuse designed for the type ofinstallation and the cross-section of the connecting lines. In addition, the products of the PU series are tested with a maximum backup fuse (refer to technical data for details).

If the fuse used in the installation is less than or equal to thisvalue, then this can be used as the line protection in theincoming supply. However, if the fuse is larger than that given in the technical specification, additional fuses to suit theconnecting line must be incorporated in the line to the PU module.
