OVERVIEW OF THE CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES The Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women which has been serving untiringly for the cause of women’s education for more than five decades has added one more feather in its cap of achievements through the inception of the CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES. The CENTRE functions under the able leadership of Padma Bhushan Awardee Mr. Moosa Raza I.A.S (Retd.), Chairman, S.I.E.Trust, Mr. Faizur Rahman Sayeed LL.B, (Canada) Correspondent and Secretary,J.B.A.S College for Women,Justice G.M. Akbar Ali Advisor, SIE Trust and Dr. (Mrs) Shanaz Ahmed, M.Sc.M.Phil.,PhD, Principal, J.B.A.S College for Women. The Centre for Women’s Studies of J.B.A.S College for Women, (Autonomous) Teynampet, Chennai was established in September 2005 with the financial assistance of the University Grants Commission, (U.G.C) New Delhi under the X Plan. It has now successfully completed eleven years. The Centre has the distinction of being the first UGC sponsored Centre among the Colleges in the Chennai City. The objectives of the Centre are Teaching, Training, Research and Advocacy. The Centre has continuously expanded its scope and creatively responding to the needs of staff, students and women of Chennai city. The Centre for Women’s Studies has constituted an Advisory Committee consisting of the Padma Bhushan Awardee Mr. Moosa Raza I.A.S (Retd.), Chairman, S.I.E.Trust, Dr. (Mrs) Shanaz Ahmed, M.Sc.M.Phil.,PhD, Principal, J.B.A.S College for Women, Prof. Eugienie Pinto, Former Member, T.N State Commission for Women, Padmasri. Dr. (Mrs) Jaya Arunachalam, President, Working Women’s Forum (India) and Dr. B.Madhana Rekha M.A,M.Phil,Ph.D, Former Director, Centre for Women’s Studies. Dr. S.Jameela M.A,M.Phil,Ph.D is the Director of the Centre . She has 19 years of Teaching experience and Research experience. She has participated and presented several papers in the National and International level Seminars / Conferences. The Centre for Women’s Studies has conducted the following collaborative projects for the Government of India. 1. Integrating Support Services with the Family Courts in India: An Action Research sponsored by the National Institute of Public Co-operation for Child Development, New Delhi. 2. A Comparative Study of the Status of Banares Weavers and Kancheepuram Weavers of Tamil
