Overview of Case Study

• I will be looking into how the BBC has met the standard that the “New Media” has created.

• My main area of research will be the BBC websites, as e-media is one of the biggest revolutions in the Media and the internet has dominated the platforms.

• I will also be looking at things the BBC have created that are new and different to make them stand out and also look at how they keep up with the standard even though they are an “education” institution.

Historical Developments• It was founded in 1922 and had its first broadcasting a month after it was founded.

• It started out as just one channel, BBC1, and it was only when ITV came into the production, in 1995, that the BBC had its first competition. The changes that the BBC were to make to keep up with this new commercial channel was to have a new channel, BBC2. This was awarded to the BBC after a report from the Pilkington Committee, which was set up in 1960 to consider the future in broadcasting and cable. For the BBC to gain this award it meant that it could progress and become the most popular channel in the 90 s.′

• The BBC was the first channel to introduce colour television in 1967, BBC2, making the experience for their viewers more exciting and proving that it can keep up with modern technology.

• When the internet was becoming more popular the BBC set up its own website and has been advancing the website to the point where it was the first website to have online television in December 2007.

• The children’s channels were introduced in 1985 for CBBC and this then split into another channel for even younger children in 2002 being CBeebies.

• The BBC has planned for the future as far as 2016 mentioning cuts and how the BBC will continue to run its worldwide channels. The BBC hasn’t yet mentioned about the newest in television being 3D but we can expect something in the near future from the BBC.
