Overview
• Estate Owned by: The Catena Family• Wine Region: Mendoza• Winemaker: Alejandro Viggiani• Estate Founded: 2006• Winery Production: 492,000 Bottles
Location
• The Tilia wines are sourced from the traditional Eastern region and the dynamic Southern region of Mendoza, Argentina.
• Tilia’s Torrontés grapes are sourced from Cafayate, Salta in the northwestern region of Argentina.
Location
• Eastern Region– Located 50 miles to the southeast of the city
of Mendoza, at an elevation of 1,950 - 2,150’. – One of the oldest and most traditional
viticultural regions in Mendoza.– A true desert, receiving less than 8” of rain a year. – The need of irrigation is met with pure mountain spring water from snow melt of the Andes,
arriving to the region via the Tunuyan River.• Tilia promotes very carefully controlled furrow irrigation, in which the water is
watchfully guided through the vineyard row by row. – 330 of sunshine days a year.– The pergola, overhead trellising system is used to provide shade for the grapes. – The dry, arid climate means very few insects, so they do not use pesticides.– The grapes have very ripe, rich fruit flavors and excellent mid-palate depth and
concentration.
Location
• Southern Region– Located 100 miles due south from Mendoza city, at an elevation 3,000 - 4,000’. – The area is made up primarily of the San Carlos County. – Considered to be one of the premiere grape growing regions in Mendoza.– The higher elevation translates into much lower temperatures, allowing for more aromatic
intensity and higher levels of natural acid for freshness and balance.– The winery uses drip irrigation on the desert land. This allows for more careful water
management and has lead farmers to explore new viticultural areas.– Tilia farmers use vertical shoot positioning, giving
the fruit exposure to valuable sunshine.– The dry, arid conditions mean that they do not
need to use pesticides and fungicides, growing their grapes naturally.
– The grapes have very intense and complex aromatic profiles and lend a cool freshness to the Tilia wines.
History• Made at Bodegas Esmeralda, Tilia has been hand-crafted to
demonstrate true varietal character. • This is a second label of Catena, Catena-owned and crafted—
same winemaker! • The brand is named after the Tilia (Linden) tree commonly
found throughout Argentina’s wine country. – Vineyard workers often make tea from the flowers of this tree and
enjoy time sitting in the shade after a hard day’s work.– These wines are a tribute to those workers and to the Argentinean
way of living life to the fullest, enjoying every moment and relaxing in the natural environment the land provides.
• The Tilia wines are made by Alejandro Viggiani, a winemaker and viticulturalist in charge of all Catena family vineyards in eastern Mendoza.
Philosophy
• Sustainably farmed and a unique blend of fruit from the traditional Rivadavia Eastern region and the dynamic San Carlos Southern Region of Mendoza
• The philosophy is one of value and sustainability. No risk of moisture ‘diseases’ so no fungicides or insecticides are used.
• Tilia is dedicated to maintaining the best traditions of their rural lifestyle, to caring for their community of family farmers, and to stewarding responsibility in the use of their environment.
• The winemaking and viticultural team actively engage in many programs throughout the community to implement this credo.
