Tonight, Eliot receives urgent message from the world's Most Important Scientists. A colossal meteor is heading this way! It's going to SMASH into the Earth! This is Eliot's most important mission ever! Luckily, Eliot has built a Meteor-Busting Rocket Launcher for just such occasions. Eliot swings the barrel of the Meteor-Busting Rocket Launcher towards the sky. He aims. He holds his breath. He waits... He fires! KAPOW! Elliot saves the world from destruction! The Queen gives Eliot an award for his courage and ingenuity. The Earth trembles with deafening applause. However, being a Midnight Superhero is very exhausting. It doesn't leave Eliot with much energy. So by day… Eliot is quiet. Shhh!

English work for Year 1/2 Week beginning 29th June (Week 12)

Each day your child should begin by completing the warmup handwriting found at the beginning of each daily activity sheet.

This week’s focus: Expanding sentences (where, when, why, how) We will be basing our work this week on the following story which has been adapted from the original text ‘Eliot Midnight Super Hero’ by Ann Cottringer. You could also watch a read aloud version of this storyat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7oVJkgTJT8

The video on this weblink:https://www.thewritingrevolution.org/first-grade-class-using-sentence-expansion/ shows a teacher using sentence expansion with their Year 2 children-and might be a helpful explanation for parents. Key (tier 2) vocabulary in this text: Urgent, colossal, courage

By day, Eliot is quiet. He reads his books. He feeds his goldfish. He watches Mr Smith wash the car. The grownups think Eliot is such a quiet little thing. But when the clock strikes midnight...Eliot is a superhero! He hangs out of helicopters. He returns teddies to babies. He even tames lions. Each day starts with a handwriting warm up. This should take no more than 5 minutes and can be done either orally or in writing.

Worked examples are provided on the children’s sheets to support understanding.

If your child is struggling with the volume of writing, you could complete some of the work orally or scribe some sentences. There is a video clip on Cottenham TV to support your child in understanding sentence expansion.

Day Focus Advice and guidance 1 To know

some of the ways sentences can be expanded

1. Recap the Eliot text 2. Explain to your child that simple sentences can be expanded by adding where,

when, why, how phrases (we will just concentrate on where, when and how this week)

3. Look at the simple sentence example on the sheet. Eliot read. Then look at the expanded examples. ‘ Eliot read in his garden’ (where) ‘Eliot read in the morning’(when) and ‘, Eliot read silently.’ (how) and discuss the expanding part of the sentence

4. If your child has found this tricky, look at the next set of sentences together (these have the expanded part highlighted) and ask your child to write them out, underlining the expanded part and writing ‘where, when or how’ to say what type of sentence it is. If they are struggling with this volume of writing, they could just write the sentence type

5. If your child is confident, get them to continue with the un-highlighted sentences 6. As an extension, ask your child to work through questions 11-15. Here the position

of the expander changes 2 To expand

sentences using when

1. Recap the Eliot text 2. Remind your child about yesterday’s work. If you have time you could say some

sentences to them and ask them to spot the where, when or how phrases 3. Today, the children are going to be expanding sentences using ‘when’ phrases-

When phrases tell us ‘when’ something happened. They can begin with ‘when, at, after, before, on, while, during’

4. Get your child to mind map some possible time phrases (use the when, where, why phrase bank to help if needed)

5. Look at the example sentence and explain how the ‘when’ phrase has been added to the end of the sentence (Eliot was a super hero during the night.)

6. If your child has found this tricky, work on questions 1-5- link the sentence to a when phrase. You could either do this as a cut and stick activity or write the sentences out

7. If they are more confident, work on questions 6-10. Ask your child to add when phrases to each simple sentence and write them in their book

8. If your child has managed this confidently then look at the second example and discuss the placement of the ‘when’ phrase before the simple sentence followed by a comma ‘During the night, Eliot was a super hero.’

9. Ask your child to add when phrases in different places to these sentences (questions 11-16)

e.gMr Smith washes his car in the morning or In the morning, Mr Smith washes his car. They could choose one option for each sentence or place the where phrase in different places and two different sentences

3 To expand sentences

using where

1. Recap the Eliot text 2. Remind your child about yesterday’s work. Can they say a sentence with a ‘when’

phrase’ 3. Today, the children are going to be expanding sentences using ‘where’ phrases (the

proper word is prepositional phrases but there is no need to use this with your child) -Where phrases tell us where something is happening. These might begin with: in, behind, infront of, underneath, beside, alongside

4. Get your child to mind map some possible where phrases (use the when, where, how phrase bank to help if needed)

5. Look at the example sentence and explain how the ‘where’ phrase has been added to the end of the sentence (Eliot read in his room)

6. If your child has found this tricky, work on questions 1-5- link the sentence to a where phrase. You could either do this as a cut and stick activity or write the sentences out

7. If they are more confident, work on problems 6-10. Ask your child to add when phrases to each simple sentence and write them in their book

8. If your child has managed this confidently then look at the second example and discuss the placement of the ‘where’ phrase before the simple sentence followed by a comma ‘In the zoo,the lions had escaped’

9. Ask your child to add where phrases in different places to these sentences e.gEliot flew high above the earth or High above the earth, Eliot flew. They could choose one option for each sentence or place the where phrase in different places and two different sentences

4 To expand sentences using how

1. Recap the Eliot text 2. Remind your child about yesterday’s work. Can they say a sentence with a ‘where’

phrase’ 3. Today, the children are going to be expanding sentences using ‘how’ phrases (the

children will be more familiar with this, due to their work on adverbs) A how phrase or word tells us ‘how’ something is done. It might be an adverb (often ending in ly) or use the word ‘feeling’ or ‘as’- quickly or as quick as a flash or feeling happy

4. Get your child to mind map some possible how phrases (use the when, where, how phrase bank to help if needed)

5. Look at the example sentence and explain how the ‘how’ word has been added to the end of the sentence (Eliot read happily)

6. If your child has found this tricky, work on questions 1-5- link the sentence to a how phrase. You could either do this as a cut and stick activity or write the sentences out

7. If your child is more confident, work on questions 6-10. Ask your child to add how phrases to each simple sentence and write them in their book- if they are finding this challenging they should stick to an adverb (e.g. happily). If they are more confident, they could use feelings or similies (as quick as a flash etc)

8. If your child has managed this confidently then look at the second example and discuss the placement of the ‘how’ phrase before the simple sentence followed by a comma ‘As quick as a flash, Eliot zoomed to the rescue.’

9. Ask your child to work on questions 11-15 addinghow phrases in different places to these sentences e.g. They could choose one option for each sentence or place the how phrase in different places and two different sentences

5 To write a passage using a range of expanded sentences

1. Look through the mind maps your child has created this week using different sentence expanders

2. Read through the sentences your child wrote on Day 5 last week, asking them to think about the adjectives and adverbs they used

3. Pick a couple of sentences from this piece and ask how they could expand the sentences using what they have been working on this week

4. If your child has completed this week’s activities with ease, you may consider talking to them about using more than one sentence expander e.g At night time, Eliot zoomed speedily to the rescue.

5. Using last week’s pictures and description, ask your child to expand their original sentences to tell parts of the Eliot story
