1. IPDR-WS: Rationale* Purpose: To provide a forum for a synergetic
framework among existing and emerging initiatives for information platforms on disaster reduction (IPDR).
* Notion:+ Various disaster reduction information platforms have
been established or being developed+ Contributing to disaster reduction purposes+ Individual initiatives are acting rather independently* The IPDR Workshop is expected to enhance
understanding among them and promote collaboration.

* Regional Focus: On the Asian context, but with global perspectives
* Organizers+ Sponsor: NIED (National Research Institute for
Earth Science and Disaster Prevention), and JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency)
DRH-Asia Project: DRH Links+A single DRH can not solve everything. +We need links to other relevant initiatives.
+They need to be based on synergetic relation among relevant initiatives.

• Knowledge sharing and common solution identification among experts in disaster sciences should be encouraged,
• Sound knowledge and good data are the basis of effective disaster reduction planning,
• Infrastructure to gather, store and exchange data should be enhanced,
• Construction of databases and networks to transfer knowledge and skills are critical, and
• Right to access information on hazards, risks and effective measures should be clearly set out in policy and law.
2. Roles in the ASTF+ The IPDR-WS: Organized under the Asian Science and
Technology Forum-ASTF (sponsored by JST)+ The 3rd ASTF: Tokyo 5 October 2007+ ASTF Session3: Natural Disasters, Society, Development,
Science and Technology (coordinated by NIED / Session chair: Tsuneo Katayama, Tokyo Denki University).

3. ObjectivesExpected outputs of the IPDR Workshop are:(1) Mutual understanding: On the significance of
activities in participating initiatives and perspectives of collaboration
(2) Tsukuba IPDR Report 2007: A document to clarify the context, policy and technical enhancement of information platforms for disaster reduction
(3) Guided IPDR Links: A document highlighting the purpose and position of the individual initiatives participating in the Workshop
(4) Tsukuba IPDR Resolution 2007: On the importance of information platforms, national and international efforts by governments, continued workshops, etc.
