We all know why breathing is soimportant and yet most o do not
breathe as well as we could, afect-ing our health adversely. How so?
1. How we breathe aects the amount ocarbon dioxide and oxygen we have inour blood. oo much carbon dioxide willgive us acid blood (Like too much in theair gives us acid rain). Te acid balance oour blood directly aects the unctioningo our hormones and almost everythingelse. I we breathe correctly our body ismore likely to unction correctly.
2. I we breathe incorrectly we may startto overuse muscles, particularly in theshoulders and neck, which can lead tochronic neck and shoulder problems.
3. Shallow breathing does not allow us tode-stress whereas deep abdominal breath-ing triggers the relaxation response whichis the opposite o the ght/fight or stressresponse.
In my experience, i you suer romstress, tight muscles and general bodilydiscomort, the single most eective thingyou can do is to learn to breathe properly.Going and getting exercise is essentialand may help aerate your body, but this isonly a temporary x i your breathing isdysunctional.
Just imagine somebody who is stressed oranxious; they are breathing ast and shal-lowly, or they are not breathing at all. Youcan try breathing ast and shallowly (iyou do not have a lung problem or suerrom panic attacks) or a moment. How
does it eel? Now try breathing slowly anddeeply. How does that compare? Whenyou eel angry or nervous beore makinga presentation the best thing to do is tostop and take a ew deep breaths.
When you breathe in, your abdomenshould expand outwards, your lower ribcage should expand sideways and yourupper ribcage should expand orward justa little. Your shoulders should not lit and
when you look in the mirror you shouldsee no movement in the muscles o yourneck. You can use your hands to eel theexpansion in these dierent areas.
Retraining breathing takes time andsensitivity. You need to practice ullbreathing every day or ve minutes orso and you should stop and take a ulldeep breath a couple o times an hour.I you do this or three months you willre-programme your brains automaticcontrol o your breath. I you nd it hardand there is a lot o tension in your abdo-men then you may benet rom a gentle
massage.I you suer rom any heart or lung
disorder please consult your doctor beoretrying to alter your breathing as yourbody may react to changes in the chemis-try it has got used to.
Remember dont try too hard, be gentleand allow time to change and you willreally transorm how you eel throughyour breath.

the proposal. Developers Redrow want to

Trees to come down?
PLANS to cut down trees lining the road at
St Marys Church, Handbridge, have been
submitted to the local council. The Diocese
of Chester wants to remove the four pine
trees to allow the driveway at the church
to be widened. The diocese says the treesare a potential danger to the public because

wht is known s The Overleigh
Rondbot.
If you take the exit road for Wrexham, after
a short distance on the right hand side is a
red brick building with distinctive gable ends. This is one of several buildings around
Chester that was constructed at the very
end of the nineteenth century, primarily as
girls homes.
The Duke of Westminster donated land and
the architect T.M. Lockwood & Sons, at the
behest of the Duke designed four homes,
the largest of which was on the Wrexham
Road.
Smaller homes were constructed at Upton,
Saughall and Dodleston.
Dodleston
From the Overleigh Roundabout, Lache
Lane takes you out into the countryside and
eventually to the village of Dodleston, where
a smaller version of the Wrexham Road
Girls Home was built.
A loan of nearly 6,600 was secured andthe home in Dodleston was built during 1900
and housed only girls. It is now the red brick
detached building known as Hill View and
Oak Bank on Church Road; its rst dozen
girls, probably aged between eight and ten
years, arrived in November 1901.
Homes such as these were always located
close to schools so that the children would
have the benet of a basic education,
sufcient to give them a start in life. In the
home, they would also be trained to work in
servitude before going out into the big wideworld.
Accommodation at the Dodleston Girls
Home comprised of two dormitories upstairs
with the Mothers Room in between.
Downstairs was a large Day Room, Living
Room, Washhouse and Sick Room.
The Girls Home nally closed in December
1938, having been under the control of
Cheshire County Council since 1930. During
its lifetime as a home and safe haven for
girls, 151 children had been housed and a
majority of these had gone on to work as
house maids and servants in the area.
Demanding lives
For most of these very young girls, life
away from their own homes would be very
different for them. These rst insignicant
positions taught the girls some of the stricthousehold standards they could expect in
their future placements.
Even in the most unpretentious middle-
class home, life was apt to be undeniably
more demanding than they had experienced
in their own cramped and impecunious living
situation. Many of these children would be
placed in homes without even knowing the
proper names of and uses for the common
kitchen utensils and pieces of furniture thatthey would be expected to clean.
For most, this lack of knowledge was
simply due to having never seen or used
these items in their own lives, and this
particular difculty was most evident when
children who came from orphanages and
workhouses were placed into service
In its nal year, 1938, there were only nine
girls in the Dodleston home, and for a shorttime it also admitted a few boys.

QUEENS PARK HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
A-LEVEL geography students had the
opportunity to visit central Dublin as part of
their preparation for the completion of the
eldwork component of their course.
The students visited Ireland before the end
of the summer term. Along with teachers
Eadaoin Merryweather and Sarah Kearney,
they worked alongside an executive plannerfor Dublin City Council, Ronan Fallon, and
a member of staff and students from St.
Chads Catholic and Mixed Faith High School,
Runcorn.
Students investigated the impacts of an
on-going regeneration project, called HARP
(Historic Area Rejuvenation Project).
Students collected various pieces of
primary data, including environmental quality
surveys, business, tourist and local residents
questionnaire responses.
The Dublin A-Level eldtrip provided a
perfect opportunity for students to engage
in real-life geographical decision making.
Students had the opportunity to be part of
the planning process in one of Europes most
vibrant cities. Dublin is changing fast, and
our students have been part of the process
that evaluates the success of the current
regeneration, said Mrs Kearney - subject
leader for geography
Mrs Merryweather added: This was realGeography, out in the eld, working with a
city planner, doing primary research and
examining actual planning documents. It was
an unforgettable experience and the students
were a credit to their respective schools.
Student Louise Tompkins said We got
to meet and work with new students from
another school, and got to see the effects of
a regeneration project rst-hand. The Dublin
planner gave us in depth information about
past and present changes in the area, and
gave us a brilliant tour of the whole of central
Dublin.

CHESTER CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
TEARS, laughter, charged by hippos, tent
ridden by food poisoning, exhaustion from
summiting a Mount Kenya, lunch stolen by
baboons, teaching to classes of 50, dancing
in churches, hand feeding giraffes, trekking
up volcanoes, scrambling down gorges, tree
planting, 60-a side football matches, breakdancing in orphanages . just another day for
the CHSC Kenya Team.
Ten students from the Catholic High School,
Chester, along with Maths teacher Richard
Ives have returned from a life-changing
expedition to Kenya. The visit included game
parks, boat rides, bike rides, gorge walking
and volcano scrambling, but the real highlights
for the group were the time spent in schools
and orphanages and the thrill of climbingAfricas second highest mountain.
The school in Gilgil was a real eye opener,
with group teaching there for three days. Two
students found themselves teaching about
AIDS to 30 students for an hour, of which at
least half had lost a parent to the disease. The
students made many friends here and were
invited to a nearby orphanage, which was
home to 30 street boys from the school. The
money the group raised before they left was
used to clear the orphanages debt at the local
supermarket, buy football kits and footballs,
and give them funds to pay for the boysexams for the next 12 months.
Richard added: Mt Kenya was one of the
hardest things Ive ever done. The students
will have never experienced such a difcult
prolonged challenge. The trek to the mountain
was beset with food poisoning, roaming
elephants blocking the routes, savagely cold
nights and increasing altitude sickness, but the
team pulled together and dealt with
every hurdle objectively and withteam spirit.
Two of the group, along with one
of the leaders, had to turn back, but
the remaining eight students, along
with Richard made the nal climb
to the summit starting at 2.30am.
CThe expedition was organised
in conjunction with Outlook
Expeditions. The students had
prepared for two years in advance
of the visit and had been fully
trained for the both the work with
schools and mountain expedition.

Hawthorn trees have red berries and whiteor pink owers in early summer. If youwant to plant a tree have a look at Crataeguslaevigata Pauls Scarlet with deep pink owersor Crataegus laevigata Rosea Flore Plena withdouble pink owers.
Flowers that are in season in October include
the delicate Cyclamen hederifolium whichwill ower into winter and look great plantedunder trees and shrubs that lose their leaves inautumn. They will self seed too bringing you acarpet of white or pink owers in time. They areideal for a dryish spot under trees.
Chrysanthemums are out in late September
and October. Select hardy varieties that can begrown outside in the border or be prepared tobuy new plants each year as many varieties are
only half hardy and will not survive the winter ifleft outside.
Buy bulbs of daffodils and tulips and plantin October. Wallowers and primulas can beplanted out this month for colour next year.October is also the time to plant out perennials, evergreen hedging plants and climbers beforewinter sets in. The soil should still be warmfrom summer to allow good root growth andalso damp from rain enabling them to survivethe winter.
In the vegetable garden you can probably stillplant winter lettuce seeds then cover with acloche to supply some greens in winter. Liftpieces of mint, thyme and chives and pot up foruse indoors when the plants outside die backand sow seeds of parsley to use in cooking.Make sure broccoli and Brussels sprout plantsare staked.
October is the time for the last cut of the yearfor the lawn. You can also lay turf provided thesoil is moist and there are no frosts likely.
