Letters to the Editor - continuedWhat we deduce from the foregoing is that
from what was a previously shared managerial responsibility of the Commonwealth and the Norfolk Island Government up until 2015, Norfolk Island representation and interests are being squeezed out, and the Commonwealth arrogating increasing powers to itself. The move is systemic, and from the point of view of the community, appears out of control. We add some further examples.1. The stripping of the Norfolk Island Legislative
Assembly by the Commonwealth-appointed Transitional Administration. At some time during September 2015 the entire contents of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly in the Old Military Barracks in the KAVHA area were removed - furniture and fittings, democratic symbols, memorabilia – the lot, and placed in storage. It is inconceivable that this action was taken without the knowledge of the then-Administrator. Almost the only known contemporary and publicly available record of this event is a posting on Facebook. (5) This removal was undertaken without community announcement or consultation. All these tangible elements of Norfolk Island heritage were in place when the World Heritage Council granted World Heritage status to the site, and their removal constitutes not only unacceptable conduct by the Commonwealth and its representatives but an illegality under the EPBC Act. Furthermore these actions appear to contravene Articles of UNESCO’s Managing Cultural World Heritage manual, and may also contravene Articles of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
2. Failure to adequately represent Post-Convict Heritage in KAVHA. The shameful incident just recounted demonstrates both the cavalier attitude of the Commonwealth to aspects of non-convict KAVHA heritage and a denigration of the Pitcairners’ achievements. The Legislative Assembly period was an important and perhaps world-noteworthy experiment in small-island democracy which persisted for over 35 years, and is as much part of the heritage value of that area as many other elements of KAVHA. Furthermore, it enshrined a proud and much longer Norfolk Island democratic tradition, namely the according of equal voting rights to men and women in community decision-making ever since their arrival from Pitcairn Island in 1856 - and on Pitcairn Island before that. (The first Australian state to give women the right to vote was South Australia, in 1895.)
The draft Heritage Management Plan (HMP) for KAVHA does identify the relevance of post-convict heritage, but whether this is or is not mere box-ticking remains to be seen. The HMP itself provides some indications however. The section on History refers to the various settlements on Norfolk: the Polynesian, the first (colonial), second (penal) and third (Pitcairn). However

we received from all yorlye (it was the most humbling experience I ever had), it is time for me to retire.
It is with relief and contentment that I am handing over the farm to my Daughter and her Husband, Cassie & Kenny as of the 1st July, and thereby continuing Island Eggs as a Norfolk Island Family Run Business.

The math behind egg supply is simple. Irrespective of price, you need to buy local to ensure daily eggs. We can only produce what we sell. It takes six months to turn the “egg tap” on again if demand drops. When you can’t buy an egg at any price, for weeks at a time, the imports aren’t so cheap after all.

from what was a previously shared managerial responsibility of the Commonwealth and the Norfolk Island Government up until 2015, Norfolk Island representation and interests are being squeezed out, and the Commonwealth arrogating increasing powers to itself. The move is systemic, and from the point of view of the community, appears out of control. We add some further examples.1. The stripping of the Norfolk Island Legislative
Assembly by the Commonwealth-appointed Transitional Administration. At some time during September 2015 the entire contents of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly in the Old Military Barracks in the KAVHA area were removed - furniture and fittings, democratic symbols, memorabilia – the lot, and placed in storage. It is inconceivable that this action was taken without the knowledge of the then-Administrator. Almost the only known contemporary and publicly available record of this event is a posting on Facebook. (5) This removal was undertaken without community announcement or consultation. All these tangible elements of Norfolk Island heritage were in place when the World Heritage Council granted World Heritage status to the site, and their removal constitutes not only unacceptable conduct by the Commonwealth and its representatives but an illegality under the EPBC Act. Furthermore these actions appear to contravene Articles of UNESCO’s Managing Cultural World Heritage manual, and may also contravene Articles of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
2. Failure to adequately represent Post-Convict Heritage in KAVHA. The shameful incident just recounted demonstrates both the cavalier attitude of the Commonwealth to aspects of non-convict KAVHA heritage and a denigration of the Pitcairners’ achievements. The Legislative Assembly period was an important and perhaps world-noteworthy experiment in small-island democracy which persisted for over 35 years, and is as much part of the heritage value of that area as many other elements of KAVHA. Furthermore, it enshrined a proud and much longer Norfolk Island democratic tradition, namely the according of equal voting rights to men and women in community decision-making ever since their arrival from Pitcairn Island in 1856 - and on Pitcairn Island before that. (The first Australian state to give women the right to vote was South Australia, in 1895.)
The draft Heritage Management Plan (HMP) for KAVHA does identify the relevance of post-convict heritage, but whether this is or is not mere box-ticking remains to be seen. The HMP itself provides some indications however. The section on History refers to the various settlements on Norfolk: the Polynesian, the first (colonial), second (penal) and third (Pitcairn). However

we received from all yorlye (it was the most humbling experience I ever had), it is time for me to retire.
It is with relief and contentment that I am handing over the farm to my Daughter and her Husband, Cassie & Kenny as of the 1st July, and thereby continuing Island Eggs as a Norfolk Island Family Run Business.

It is with relief and contentment that I am handing over the farm to my Daughter and her Husband, Cassie & Kenny as of the 1st July, and thereby continuing Island Eggs as a Norfolk Island Family Run Business.
Cassie and Kenny are looking forward to introducing fresh energy and new ideas.
Our family took on Island Eggs 20 years ago, So, for all our customers for so many years, I can only say another humble thank you. The math behind egg supply is simple. Irrespective of price, you need to buy local to ensure daily eggs. We can only produce what we sell. It takes six months to turn the “egg tap” on again if demand drops. When you can’t buy an egg at any price, for weeks at a time, the imports aren’t so cheap after all.
