There's always something happening at Mosman Square Seniors' Centre The Mosman Square Seniors' Centre is open daily from 9.00am. If you have to access the Centre earlier for one of our many activities, please use the Aged & Disability Services office door located to the right of the steps to the main entrance doors.

Have you lost anything? Over a period of time we have collected a number of items that have been left here at the Seniors' Centre. If you drop in, our friendly staff will be more than happy to show you these lost items, which include gloves, glasses cases, sunglasses, cardigans, jumpers etc. or, you can give us a call on 9978 4128.

Merry Christmas! It is this time of the year again, summer is back, and Christmas is only a few weeks away. The entire ADS team want to wish you all a wonderful Christmas break, and a fantastic New Year. There will be a lot of things to cheer for, and why not kick-starting the celebrations with a fantastic Christmas lunch and entertainment at the Community Restaurant on the 17th of December? Bookings are essential on 9978 4128. Also, for the shopping enthusiasts who enjoy outing trips, do not miss the Christmas shopping in Leura, on Saturday the 11th of December (cost 20$). It should be a great day out, a nice drive and a fantastic chance to get last minute presents! Most activities at the Seniors Centre will stop for the Christmas break (art classes, gentle exercise…) but the Centre will still be open, and the rest of the services will carry on as normal. During the break, if you require transport, let us know as much in advance as possible so that we can assist you. You will find that this newsletter is divided into two sections, the first one focussed on services and the second on activities, plus a lot of other useful information! This should make it more practical; in the same time, we are constantly trying to improve it, and there is much more to do, and your feedback is very welcome. On a sadder note, Mark Woolven, the manager for the Community Services at the Council will be leaving us at the beginning of December; he wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for the great times here and for the fantastic work. Amongst many other things he has been greatly involved with the Mosman Rider, celebrating one year of existence this month. Community Support I have submitted my resignation and will be leaving this role in mid-January after 12 years – it is really amazing how quickly the time has passed. During these years I have met many amazingly independent, stoic and resilient individuals who have had the chance to make choices about what they would like to help them remain living in their own homes.

• There have been couples that have supported each other, maybe someone physically not able to do things they once could, with a spouse whose memory is not as ‘good as it use to be’, who with some prompting manages to do household shopping, prepare a meal or take the rubbish out; allowing both of them to continue to live at home.

• There have been individuals whose family, because of concerns would feel happier if the person was not living in the family home, or up so many stairs but with a little support and encouragement to accept some help have been able to manage, maybe not living as family and friends think they ‘should’ be living but how they want to be managing, happy with their choice.

• People who have loved pets, who are concerned if something happens to them, how their animals may be cared for, what options are available.

• Family member’s who live in many overseas countries keep in touch when they visit; or via email and phone calls, as our service continues to help their mother or father remain living independently.

• And then there are people with no families, or who have lost touch for a variety of reasons with their family, who I have supported through the last years of their lives trying to make sure they live with dignity, and supported choice then finally being part of a very small funeral or giving an eulogy about their different and fascinating lives.

As I write this, my mind thinks over many names, faces and memories. I would like to let all the people I have supported know what a wonderful privilege it has been to be part of your lives and on most occasions being able to make a difference in your or your family members care and choices.

As part of the role I have had a wonderful group of Neighbour Aid / Social Support volunteers who provide assistance to individuals living independently, often for a number of years becoming someone’s ‘friend’. Or who will take a call at short notice and say ‘yes’ to assisting someone recently discharged from hospital; someone needing some shopping; taking a dog for a walk due to a person’s short term injury; and many other calls for assistance. Thank you to those volunteers, many who have been volunteering longer than I have been in the service.

Lyn Kelleher will continue to provide this support and assistance so please give her a call on 9978 4119 if you need if you would like her to visit you at home, come into the office, or just talk on the phone to discuss concerns or issues; or feel that you may benefit from some support.

Thank you once again for allowing me to be part of your lives whilst you are living in the Mosman area and I hope I have been able to assist you, your friend or family member remaining in their own homes a little longer. Community Restaurant

Welcome to the Community Restaurant! I know I keep talking about the weather, but honestly!! Summer one day, winter the next! It’s very hard to order appropriate food, as I have to order two weeks in advance!! We are now onto the Summer Menu and so far so good.

We’ve had a great year in the Community Restaurant with some great special lunches! The two real highlights were the Aboriginal theme lunch, with those fabulous dancers and the Spanish Fiesta with the beautiful Mercedes!! The Melbourne Cup Lunch was as usual, lots of fun with many of you participating in the Fancy Hat Parade. The categories were won by; Brian Woolley (Funniest), Cliff Haynes and Whitney Oey (Most original) and Frances Lutge (Most elegant). It’s always hilarious and these people had put a huge amount of work into their hats! Thank you for joining in!

The next big lunch coming up, is, of course, Christmas! The lunch will be held on Friday 17th December. PLEASE book in, as this lunch always sells out very quickly. The tickets are available with Olivier. Bring your singing voices with you, as Anne and Paul Palumbo will be coming along to lead us in some carol singing! After that, we will be headed into 2011 and the first big lunch of the year will be to celebrate Australia Day and will be held on Friday 28th January.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful volunteers who have worked so hard in the Community Restaurant this year. We couldn’t manage it without them!! They are a fabulous team! Also to Cheryl, Hannah and Olivier and the different bus drivers. Doug (retired), Michael and Arthur who are the silent backbone behind the scenes, always willing to step in and give a hand whenever needed.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and spend some time with your families. On behalf of all of us in Aged and Disability services I wish you peace, joy and happiness for the season.

Community Transport

Remember that the fantastic transport team offers many options to assist you with transportation in and around your local area. Please find below a detail of all services covered. For further information, and if you think you need transport, call Dianne or Karen on 9978 4120. Bookings are essential. Mondays: Shopping at Bridgepoint Shopping Centre. Tuesdays: On Tuesdays, we offer transport to the Mosman Stroke Recovery Group, the Mosman Library, and the lunch bus if you want to come to the community restaurant. Wednesdays: On Wednesdays, take part in the Out & About trips for frail aged; and on the 5th Wednesday of the month, there is also a service for the Carers Outing. Thursdays: The Shuttle bus transports you all over the lower North Shore, for the frail aged we also offer half day bus trips and 3 times per year, there is the Garden Lovers Bus trip. Fridays: On Fridays there is local transport for frail aged in Mosman, and there is also the lunch bus, taking you from your place to the community restaurant. Saturdays: On the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month there are excursions for the well aged, bookings are essential, enquire on 9978 4128. There is also individual transport, Monday to Friday: shuttle buses, volunteers or paid drivers are available to assist residents for doctors and hospitals appointments; a small fee applies and booking in advance is necessary. Wheelchair transport is also available.

TIPS FOR PASSENGERS

On the day of your transport try to be ready five or ten minutes before you are to be picked up, just in case the driver is early.

It is good to have everything ready that you might need to take on your trip, such as medication, wallet, purse etc.

If you have not received a phone call to inform you of your pick-up time previous to the day you are travelling, please do contact the office.

Meals on Wheels

Volunteers and staff at Meals on Wheels would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Meals on Wheels office will be closed for the Christmas weekend and the public holidays on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th December and Monday 3rd January.

Our volunteers will not be available to deliver meals on these days but frozen meals may be ordered in advance.

Also available, to be ordered in advance, is our delicious Christmas Day dinner – roast turkey breast, leg ham, roast potatoes, roast pumpkin, baby beans, gravy and cranberry sauce followed by traditional Christmas plum pudding with brandy custard for dessert.

For the warmer weather, our tasty new summer menu offers a choice of meals each day, including vegetarian options and fresh salads, together with soups and desserts. A range of fresh sandwiches are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Mosman Faces : A project that puts you in the picture

Local Studies are making a film on Mosman and its history. The film will be on an interactive website aiming to create a montage of faces, family, friends or maybe a relative of yours who lived in Mosman a long time ago.

The image can be a hard copy original photograph which can be dropped in to the Library anytime. It will be scanned and returned to you. Alternatively you can email a high resolution image to [email protected] . Senior's Sharing Would you like to share a story with us? We are trying to get a collection of seniors' Stories and hope for a production of a little booklet at some stage. Having lived a number of years, you might have a treasure chest full of wonderful stories to tell us that we could include in the Over 55s Newsletter. Each edition of our newsletter will have three new topics for you to write about. Please keep the story short, one page maximum, due to the limited number of pages of the newsletter itself. As we get older, exercise becomes even more important in our lives. It keeps our muscles toned, our bones strong, improves our balance and enhances our sense of wellbeing. All those things are important not only for their long term health benefits but also for ensuring we are able to maintain our independence and quality of life.

Healthy Lifestyle currently has vacancies in the Slow Pace Gentle Exercise class at Mosman Seniors on Thursdays at 9:30am. This class will offer low impact exercise (no jumping) that contains cardiovascular, toning and flexibility components.

There are also some vacancies in Upright and Active, a falls prevention class held on Friday afternoons at 2:30pm. If you have recently had a fall, or you worry about falling when you go out, this is the class for you. Some of the exercises can be done while you’re seated on a chair and others can be done standing but holding on to the back of a chair for assistance. This exercise program will improve your stability and your confidence.

It’s never too late to start so get into a course to suit you. Courses begin the week of January 31st, 2011.

Mosman Leisure Walkers These leisurely paced walks are planned for able bodied members of the community with both males and females being most welcome. Put on a hat, bring a bottle of water and come walking with a friendly active social group of seniors.

Knitting Interested in knitting? Why not help make wraps for charity, and/or join our group?

Just knit a square, 10 inches (25cms) in garter stitch using 8 ply acrylic yarn on 4mm size needles.

Leave the finished square with Olivier at the main reception desk at the Seniors' Centre. The Mosman Knitting Group will be very happy to include your square in the next wrap. Wool donations would also be appreciated. The blankets produced are being sent to people in need. So far, the group has completed at least 50 blankets.

At the moment we are writing these lines, we have just been notified of the passing of Sonia Gidley-King. Sonia founded “Wrap with Love” in 1992 and since then, the association has grown larger and larger and they have so far produced over 280 000 wraps for charity. She will be remembered as the motor behind the scene, always reaching out to help others further. The knitting group in Mosman has been part of this adventure.
